At longer ranges, yes.
At short range, they don't have time to take out the missiles before they impact.
Smaller missiles = harder to intercept also.

Just remember it takes 2 defenders to take out a Torp (dunno if 1 could take out a cruise missile) and you can't tell your missile bay to continue firing. It stops after it detects no threats and you will have to manualy activate it again if something or someone launches at you again.

Its a shame too I wish they worked better because I think missles need more of a downside.

They don't work. Consider that even if every defender took out one incoming missile every time, (which never happens,) you've at best countered one enemy launcher with one of your own. That is NOT a good point-defense strategy...

they completely screw enemy long range BS with cruise

Wrong. You forget rate of fire.
Defenders work best in a rocket launcher and then they have a great rate of fire.
But I admit that I usually use assault launchers and haven't used defenders for a long time.

Not quite right m8, due to the fact that each defender launched targets the same missile it means that a cruise from a raven traverling 100k will empty an arbi rocket launcher and then take the other 5 from the raven on the nose as it reloads.

I remember the old days of actually being able to lock onto a missle of any size, and shoot it out of the sky with my railguns....ahhhh the good old days...fast locks, torps on a kessy, shooting missle with a rail gun....fun times...

I fit a rocket launcher on my Apco and load it with defenders when doing missions with missile spammers. It can take out about 30% of the incomming missiles and gives my armour rep a big break.

They work brilliantly when you sell them to your enemies.
Using them? Can't recomend it.
Lifewire> 8000 m/s, even battleships can do this |
