This sucks if you ask me. People who found out about the game first got a head start. If I had of know about EVE, I would have had so much skillpoints.
The training offline is pretty good, but when people who first started the game will ALWAYS have a advantage over the other people.... That kinda sucks.

I know that in the beginning there were some bugs with skill training.
Some people got free bosts to level 5 skills due to this.

How much you train and what skills you train also determines how fast you get skill points, the time you spend online also counts.

Edited by: Hikaru Okuda on 11/09/2003 15:47:14 Part of it has to do with character design at the beginning. Get your attributes "just right" and the correct head start on skills "just right" and you can zip through some skills and get a really high skill point level.
Also having the luck not to CTD right as a skill is about to be finished and then be stuck for 2 days.
This happened to me more than once...

3,454,067 according to the skill log on the left. I guess having a stonking willpower explains why it's a bit lower than other people who have been at it since the start.
BTW, people worrying about being a long ways behind - don't. The difference between a highly ranked skill at 4 and 5 is a lot of training with no difference until the next level clicks in. As a result you can be fairly close in abilities to someone who appears to be way ahead of you if you just go by the skill point total - especially if you're willing to specialise.

You can maximize skillpoint gain per second by training skills based on your higher attributes. Eg if you created an intaki with pumped memory/intelligence, and trained just learning and industry skills, you would gain skill points very fast. Not exactly useful as anything but a refining/production alt though, since it would take about 8 years to get out of your velator.

Anyone who has 3.9-4.0+ mil skill points took advantage of the bug. If they deny it, they are lying. I've trained since day one only missed a few hours of training, and I have 3.2mil on one character and 300k or so on the other.

I have a little above 3 mil. I could have alot more if I started training learning skills sooner, or didn't start with a memory of 4. But, I don't care. I like me the way I am.
As for the completion imminent bug, I've petitioned and bug reported that waaaaay before it was fixed. Hell, I think I made a bug report out of that back in Beta when I got level four out of a skill instead of three.

Yes by now 4.1 mil is legit.
However, I stand by my statement that there were some bugs early on. I know first hand of some people who got free boosts from level 3/4 to level 5.
CCP should have really taken steps to fix this ages ago. It wouldn't have been dificult.. just take the highest attrib points possible at creating (at launch) then find out what the max number of skill points is possible assuming that all learning skills were trained up to level 5 in the most efficient manner possible. While I don't have hard numbers, I have a feeling that the max possible at this time is around 4.0 to 4.5 million.
If true, then yes.. those who have more skill points than this got a bonus from the bug. Though I doubt they did it intentionaly.

Not that those people with 4mil ish skillpoints did it. . . but the logical way to makimize your skill points would be to train all learning skills to level 5.
Now, in the respect of time vs. gain, this seems relatively pointless, and it is. But it maximizes your skillpoint total, since the learning skills require skillpoints themselves, and allow you to obtain other skillpoints faster.

However all learning skills at lvl 5 (except charisma) so I should train faster than you ppl with lvl 4 all of them Who knows.. maybe I'll catch up in a couple of years..

It depends on whether people tell you one character, or all character totals. If you've got two separate accounts, your skill points double cause of the two accounts, AND then even more cause you're specializing the characters and making sure you pick attributes that help.
I think 4.1 million on 1 character played since release is legit.

hmm i started like 1-2 months after the release and i got 2.7mil the problem is that i forget after i stared or so... they changed the attrib i guess it was displaying wrong? or was it a bug who knows... anyway ya it does matter which skills you train, and the attrib do count the higher ones are good, problem is that too high you get little advantage after X amount... until they put in those implants/boosters or whatever...

No not entirely true. When the boosters will arrive people with too much money (being the players that play a lot) will learn skills a LOT faster.
Also when players will start closing in on the most expensive clone of 19M skills point I wonder how willing they are to go over that. --- soonÖ |

I'm comming up to 3 million points, got the game 2 weeks into release. The thing that pi**es me off the most is the fact that my character is stuck with a totally useless 13 Charisma. Every day I fall further behind for stupid choices I made on day 1, and there is fk all I can do about it. The manual made charisma sound useful - yeah right. If I balanced out the attribute points better I'd have far far more skill points than the ~3 mill I currently have. Roll on boosters and implants. Until they're in the game I'm stcuk at a totally unfair disadvantage. CCP should either allow people with high charisma to balance a few of the points to other attributes or actually make charisma a primary or secondary attribute of some skills (read: some non-useless skills).

its not so hard to understand why high skill points can be possible. skills are based on what? right, attributes. now lets say you train trade and have high charisma and willpower (i assume these both were the sec and pri attribute for trade). now... you need X days to train it (all 256k skill points). Maybe this is 2-4 days less than others need to train for it. So you are faster in some branches then others. If you have no int or mem it makes no "real" sense to train any skill based on them. |

Thanks for the advice, but since memory is either primary or secondary for many of the skills (I have not checked but I think electronics, engineering, industry, learning!) your advice would mean I should stay in station the whole time, copying blueprints.
I prefer to play the hand dealt and hope to pick up the cyber implant to help me catch up soon. If not, it will be interesting to see how long it takes before I get ganked every time I go out.

Quote: I'm comming up to 3 million points, got the game 2 weeks into release.
I would not be too upset. Imagine the advantage you will have once the skills are put in which require charisma. You will be one of the very few who will be able to dominate the area, as most players seem to be avoiding the attribute. For example better agrent press (rare item link), lower prices (NPC faction ratings), and lower agression (NPC reaction). Plus I am sure there will be other areas not yet mentioned.

Why would time online matters to skillpoints ?

Slipstream first day of retail was May 6th.
I have 2.6m skillpoints :/ Was one of the first to log on to the retail servers, but I didn't train my learning skills very much in the beginning. I started with 4 memory/6 intelligence And then the summer came, missed about 6 weeks there :)
But the difference to someone else isn't really that big as I have almost all skills @ lvl3 or higher.

4.4 mil skill points all learning to lvl 5 even learning itself except charisma seems worthless and yes i specialized in 1 area i have 18 gunnery skills next closest is spaceship command with 12 so i gained points with training in my area of expertise whereas ppl rounded would have it easier on the whole for both areas i have it easy in fighting and suck at almost everything else o i started day 2 btw

Maybe you should get on top of getting your scientists to fix the implants and send them back into empire space, being how you are "superior" and all
