I just, to my great pleasure and pride, got access to level II agents, after many days of noobie work for a level I Caldari Navi Internal Security Agent.
However, the 3rd mission I got was 'Illegal Activity (1 of 3)', which, I quickly discovered, was screwing my Gallente standing.
I would very much like to progress through the game and do missions and whatnot, but not at the cost of one or more of my empire standings. Does running missions, over time, inevitably lead to the loss of empire faction? Should I be doing complexes (the thought of squatting in a complex competing for spawns with other players makes me want to spork my eyes out)? Belt ratting (and getting OMGWTF'd by PC pirates built for PvP where I am not)?
I need advise. :/

Running for certain factions will have negative effects on others. _______________

For the short term. Look at the details of each mission before you accept it to determine if the mission involves killing factions ships. If so, decline.
You can decline one mission every 4 hours per agent, so work more than one agent, if you want to continue to do missions and the agent offers another negative faction standing mission within the four hour window.
In the long term. You need to come to grips with the idea that the devs WANT us to choose sides. They WANT you to have a negative opposing faction.
This seems to be in preparation for the much touted "Factional warfare" feature. As you can bet that participating in that activity is going to have some faction issues.

Always remember though that declining a mission will only NOT effect your standing if you have not already accepted the mission. If you accept and then decline you will take a standing hit for it. --------------------------------- Monkey Nut |

There seems to be one or two missions for each faction that will injure the opposing faction. However, the standing hit is actualy pretty minor.
I mostly work Gallente agents, and over time this causes my Caldari standings to decay. When it gets close to zero I flip over to my Caldari corps (Cald biz trib and Kaalakiota) and run them for a few days for important missions to boost caldari state back up.
Been doing this for a few months and it has been trivial to keep both factions above zero dispite sending thousands of caldari sailors to davy jones's locker.

So to understand,.becasue I hear different things. If I get an email offer for a very important mission. And I ignore it.,.I will not be faction hit? I always hope this is the case, becaue it feels like blackmail then,.hee hee. Will there ever be a time when you cannot even go to empire of another race unless they kill you?

Things change all the time, but last time I paid attention to it, you got no hit if you declined the mission (have to go to agent and talk to them, in order to do so), got a very small hit if you let it time out without formally declining it, and got a big hit if you accepted the mission and then failed it.
