Quote:Before I start, I just want to say there are some CORE ASPECTS of EVE that are FANTASTIC, a good example of these is the skill queue system.
- EVE is not a big truck. Big Trucks can move your stuff, and yourself in relative safety. The Ford F-150 even has an in-dash Global Positioning System, heated leather seats, and dual climate control. EVE is not a Ford F-150.
- EVE is like a hand pump rail car it is often painful, it is horrifyingly slow, and it requires immense effort on the end user to get anything accomplished.
- EVE has a sincere lack of Chi, what is Chi you might ask? It is the inner power the human mind, if EVE were an animal it would be something cold blooded and fanged. EVE is the serpent, and as such it is without Chi.
Those are three clearly defined issues that plague your average user.
The Solution?
+ Automated Systems to make life easier for all pilots, but happen on Real-World Timers.
The Key with all these automated systems is they would take MUCH LONGER than handling them in person.
Example: Your pilot has the skills to fly a freighter, but you don't personally have the time to AFK all the way to Jita
Set up an Automated Trip Plan to Jita, and the freighter will AFK all the way there while you are offline, with all the risks and rewards associated with AFKing.
The ability to set up crafting triggers, I can't tell you how many hours of my life I've spent gambling on T1 BPCs hoping for a T2 BPC, this whole system could be greatly improved through automation.
Automated Exploration Living in a wormhole is great for a month.... afterwards the thought of probing results in nobody willing to log in.
Set up an Automated System that finds every signature in the system, takes 10 minutes per sig, leaves you AFK uncloaked outside the POS shields.
There are a great many tasks in EVE that are repetitive and could greatly benefit from automation. Thank You Obama! |

Thank you for clarifying. I played the X-series up to Re-union, I wouldn't say it's totally automated but there is a heavy element of automation, more particlulary e.g. in setting up factories.
On the OPs three points I would say that they are not clearly defined issues.
The first just seems to be tautological and putting the conclusion before the argument.
The third I don't even understand what point he is trying to make. |

Too much automation can easily be a bad thing.
What makes EVE special is the wide range of "professions" you can specialize in.
Be a pvper, miner, trader, builder, hauler/freighter etc. The list is long.
These days I could not bother to mine again, ever. But I bought my first Apocolypse with the isk made in a 0.5 belt using a maller+miner II's+ratting. But I appriciate the amount of effort some guy/gal puts in to build and seed a battleship, carrier, etc on market on a larger scale. I might have made isk on loot from pvp. My isk end up in a industrialist pocket so I dont have to "waste my" time doing the "logistics run".
We are dependent on eachother, like a society. And thats what EVE Online is all about. |

If you want a truck, go buy a truck.

Who buys hand pump rail cars? Do these even still exist?

This post is remarkably lacking in Chi as well.

"At best, EVE is like speeding around in a stolen Pinto... vintage cannonball cannon ducttaped to the roof... your arm around the shoulders of a dead hooker... and 20 guys armed with frying pans chasing you down on vespas. At worst... it's EXCEL spreadsheets in space." ~ Unknown
OP... since this game basically spawns infinite resources over the long term, basic flight does not require any fuel, and money can be easily farmed there needs to be a way to create REAL VALUE for things in EVE. The Developers decided that value would be "time."
Using your own hauling example...
Moving around goods yourself doesn't have any real cost outside of time (you just need the ship to haul with). You don't want to spend that time moving stuff around. In fact... you may want to pay someone else to do it for you. This is how professions and employment niches are born.
This "time sink" also creates logistical hassles for large groups as the more stuff that needs to be shuffled around, the more time needs to be set aside to performing the task. This is one of the major things limiting "power projection" in the game.
That said... there are basic automation tools at your disposal OP. The auto-pilot function will take you all to the way to your chosen destination and it is a lot slower and riskier than piloting yourself (auto-pilot will warp to each stargate along the way at 15km and "slowboat" to it, leaving you open to being scouted). Change isn't bad, but it isn't always good. Sometimes, the oldest and most simple of things can be the most elegant and effective. |

That truck exemplifies EVE: If at first you don't succeed, HTFU, refit, and try again.
Their first try, fitted with a beefed up version of a regular bumper, got them snagged after the fourth pair.
After looking back on what went wrong, they refitted with... that. |

EVE is about the players. The less automation, the better, because the whole idea is that it is the players that put in the effort. There are too many players in this game already who automate things with bots and the like, and a player on automation is little more than an NPC if you ask me, who has not got the same claims to New Eden that a player has. You don't scare me. I've been to Jita. |

Yup, that's my opinion, and I'm sticking to it.
Missions? Not important. Hacking? Not important. The stuff I'm doing? Well, I can't be a hypocrite. The stuff I do certainly is not important. For the most part, all the important things in EVE are pretty much as streamlined as they need to be. Heck, with all the streamlining that's been happening to the market interface in the past years, the market is almost too streamlined. Owned orders highlighted? Right click > Modify straight from the details window? Scrolling to play the 0.01 ISK game?
Autopilot buttons to align, orbit, keep at range, even one that warps AND jumps in a single click... not a truck, you say? You kids need to get off my lawn. Do YOU like to undock? |

Chi... seriously? Chi? I supose your going to tell us it is missing 'a soul', 'prana', 'ki', 'ghosts', 'goblins', 'unicorns', 'godzilla', and 'the invisible spaghetti monster' as well. Because that would all be true... I don't see that as a problem however, because the real world is also lacking in any of those things.
