Read the player guide. It is very helpful.
I'd suggest both for several reasons. First, mining gets boring. Mission running will help build combat skills. Mission loot seems a bit better on average than belt rats' droppings.
I'm assuming your corp is composed of new players. You'll see many players mining in frigates and cruisers in the starting systems. Pick ships that are suited for mining, with larger cargo holds. With a corp mining operation, with some dedicated hauling, efficiency, even without barges, can be high enough to make it really worthwhile. And your corp can post a guard or two. If solo, you'll have to mix some offense with your miners for rat protection. Adding an Iteron when you can to the corp operation will help a lot. Best ore? Run some tests, see what you mine in how much time, and check market prices to get money/time. For safety, 0.9 and 1.0 systems have very weak rats. I hope this helps; but just go ahead and start. You'll evolve your own preferences and techniques quickly.

Edited by: lasarith on 25/03/2006 20:59:14 mining in the begging is more profitable than level 1 missions- better to do mining for a few weeks untill you can get cruiser-battlecruiser skill,
then up your social skills -then go all out on missions- im makeing about the same as mining,-plus recyleing loot for minerals but that with a level 2 agent.

i can make more money doing lvl3 agent missions than i can mining empire ores in my covetor and all my mining skills are maxed.
so unless your corp plans to mine low sec i wouldnt bother

What he says.
It's nice though getting the idea in your head once in a while that mining is actualy getting you places.
Hard facts....
In the time it takes you with a couple of accounts (covetors) to mine out a few belts giving you 200 milllion worth of minerals, you could have made 5-6 times that in isk running lv 4's
ofc i totaly ingnore that and mine anyway ______ Long ago one gorgeous night, we let the stars grow free. We let Zhuge do that once, he came back carrying a traffic cone, a forsale sign and three empty bottles of dutch lager. He also lost his Zimmer Frame... - Imaran

Best solution i have found is to mission, collect the loot and recycle. Mine occasionally especially i find for trit and pyr so that you can keep a steady supply of ships and ammo for your corp and to sell for profit.
This basically removes your 2 biggest overheads and generates an income, i could never use all the ammo i make from recycled loot.

the real profit in mining comes wen u manufacture ships/items with the ore u've mined. not sure if its worth it tho as i dont have the skills to do either missions or mining very well lol

Edited by: Fuujin on 26/03/2006 02:53:08 I'm new to level 4s and taking it easy but I've made over 500 mil in the past few days. I don't think I'll be sitting in my mining ship again any time soon. _______________

Mining builds character. Get yourself an Osprey and go to town.

i would say ask your corp's players, too. If some prefer mining to missions, then set up mining/manufacturing branch. Let those who have the inclination pursue that side of operations.
For those who would rather do missions, set up a mission/guardian branch.
As you decide to move your operation form high sec toa lower sec area, you will be glad to have both. It is nice to be able to manufacture your own consumables (ships and arms) once you get away from main training hubs. To do so requires the ability to get the raw materials and to manufacture effeciently.
Once your corp matures you will be seeking tech 2 mods, and at that point you can make a concerted effort to raise the cash to outfit the corp. But until you are skilled up being self sufficient for consumables is very helpful.
That is my perspective after playing 5 weeks, so I could be way off base too. But sometimes I think older players forget how much money it takes to buy skill books etc and that the real profits for missions come in low sec space. running in low sec space means ship losses as one moves on the combat learning curve.
Being able to replace those ships internally is a big plus for a growing corp.
