Edited by: SpaceDrake Storyteller on 25/03/2006 22:49:42 So I was browsing the EVE China website today, as is my wont (www.eve-online.com.cn), and using the Google translator I stumbled upon an interesting news article. It seems that on the 27th or thereabouts, there's going to be this huuuuuge news conference/expo thing in Beijing concerning space flight in general, and EVE will be promoted heavily there. If the Google translator is to be at all believed, several key devs will be at the event (Including Hilmar and Kjartan, if "CEO and Chief Game Designer" is to be believed), and the event will even include a broadcast message from the President of Iceland.
So, CCP dudes, care to elaborate on this at all? What's going down at this event? Also, I expect pictures of Oveur balancing multiple little Chinese girls on his mighty Icelandic shoulders.
EDIT: the article: Linkage -------------- What good are actions if there's no one to tell the tale afterward?

You sure it isn't the president of CCP Iceland? (Hilmar). Surely getting a top politician to speak about a video game is stretching it a bit, no?
Death is the loss of hope, everything else is merely despair.

well all I can say is fair play to ccp if this is the case.
China might not conform to western standards in many ways but that is their right. If ccp don't have to worry about what they do like google then who can blame them?
Also as far as my understanding goes (and that isn't far) Iceland has a population of about 250,000 so the president of Iceland turning up at an event that may benifit Icelands cash flow is not all that strange.
Since Eve china is not going to be connected to Tranq it's also no shocker that we don't hear much about it from CCP in here, it doesn't really effect us Does my bum look big in this cape? |

Even with the crap translation, it's very obvious they mean an Icelandic government official and not just Hilmar.
I just thought it was pretty neat that the Icelandic government thinks this is a noteworthy occasion. Go EVE! -------------- What good are actions if there's no one to tell the tale afterward?

Oh, cry me a river. It's not like Serenity is going to be powered by the tortured cries of orphans and dissidents. (Although I am fairly confident there are people on these very forums who would love to see such a server cluster in action.)
What, should China not get the idea of a server or a localized client just because its government tends to be a bit stupid?
Anyway, topic! Anyone know more about this expo thing? Current Chinese residents? -------------- What good are actions if there's no one to tell the tale afterward?

Tbh I find it hard to beleive that the then USSR didn't use veto on that little number, let alone anyone else.
It's clearly not worth the paper it's wriiten on or so many countries wouldn't chose to breach it left right and centre!

You've read far too much into my statement. I never said anything condemning the PRC, only that the statement that governments have the right to dictate their domestic politics in whatever way they see fit free from foreign interference is false.
You're making me very glad I didn't choose to join the Cyrene Initiative, by the way.

Last was NSA that gave all there visitors a lifetime cookie for covert espionage of all of that persons computer activities for no reason. And dont get me started on USA's violations of human rights such as your treatment of terrorist suspects and prisoners etc, etc...

Alexis,
hmm I thought I was only saying what happens in reality. The UN treaty has been violated by so many countries it's silly (I think 5/5 security council members have violtated it at some point or another since signing it). And that CCP isn't doing anything wrong on that basis.
My moral view point on it doesn't come into it. I'm just stating what I see to be fact.
If I were to go off on one about China then my post might be deleted because of this. It is for that same reason (in part) that CCP are creating a China server. CCP is a business and wants to make money and China is big money; but they have to obey the laws of that land to work there.
I don't see how CCP going to that market is doing anything wrong. Nor why I should be insulted for saying so.

Maybe "CEO and Chief Game Designer" refer to the CCP China versions. But since Oveur's already in Cali, why not go for a complete circumnavigation and fly home via China?
And I wonder if anyone has told the Chinese that CCP stands for Crowd Control Productions and not Chinese Communist Party? Could be a little embarassing at the conference if they don't.

CCP China is really just Horace and a few other guys, IIRC, and a whole load of GMs and customer service staff. Besides:
Originally by: Teh Chinamenz CCP Games公司CEO及首席游戏设计师都将亲临现场,或许这些传说中的ôEVE之父ö又将象2005年Chinajoy上一样受到在场中国玩家的热情追捧。
Originally by: Teh Googlnator CCP Games Corporation CEO and the Chief game designers will be at the scene, perhaps these legends of the "Eve father" will be the same as in 2005, the presence of Chinese players Chinajoy warm pursued.
They're talking about the Chinajoy games expo that EVE was displayed at last year (when CCP was looking for liscensee) so I'm 95% certain "CEO and Chief Game Desingers" refers to Icelanders. And yeah, if Oveur's in California right now (whyzat, BTW, I hadn't heard that... oh, GDC?) then it'd make sense for him to show up for this shindig which seems to be happening on Monday.
Quote: And I wonder if anyone has told the Chinese that CCP stands for Crowd Control Productions and not Chinese Communist Party? Could be a little embarassing at the conference if they don't.
I'm fairly confident everyone's clear on that.
And dammit people, stop ****ing on my thread. Must every thread about the China server sink into a political quagmire? All I care about is this upcoming press expo thingie. -------------- What good are actions if there's no one to tell the tale afterward?

If you have been following EVE China developement you will notice that the marketing is building up momentum.
Guangtong(CCP partner in China) just started their 3000 player closed testing peroid and are probably doing a lot of the localization right now.
EVE is Iceland's biggest IT export (I think at the fanfest they said something about half of Icelands's total IT). So it's not surprising that the Ambassador of Iceland of Iceland is going to attent such an important event though I've to say I wouldn't have expected that the Icelanding President give a video speech. Afaik CCP had some trouble with their governments policy feeling they weren't giving them enough support (but economic wise). Perhaps this has changed.
Ah yes and if you haven't noticed there is some huge pool atm about the name EVE is going it get in China. It looks like "EVE Star War" is going to win (that would be the translation).
In a sidenote the EVE Online China Forum are of course still some external format (not like the account, character connect forums we have here) but the is a lot of discussion going on and quite a few corps already formed (like in any MMRPG built up tbh). I've been browsing their forums a bit after I noticed that there was a 10 page thread (not that unsual in their forums) about my ASCN War movie (I was surprised about the high download volume I was receiving from China).
I'm not sure how many of the posters in the Chinse forums are acctually new players or EVE veterans how think about changing the servers but from my impression it were mainly new players.
Perhaps we can see an EVE China release by mid 2006 though I've no idea how far they are with their translation work.
