I was getting an extreme amount of disconnects from the server, which would take me to the login screen. I have always been able to log right back in when this happens. I would get disconnected when I interract with the server (open people & places, new channel, just about everything).
I was looking at other problems and advise and one of the tests was to ping 87.237.38.200 and monitor it's behaviour while playing. Well, I didn't get much further in troubleshooting because whenever I run the pings constantly ("ping -t 87.237.38.200" at command prompt) I do not have any drops to login.
A friend came over and was experiencing the same problem on my network so I had him do the same thing and he stopped getting disconnected.
Seems to me that there's some timeout issue and the server is quick to drop you if you "lose touch"...and the pings keep all that happy. Not very technical but if you are getting the frequent disconnects to login, try this out.

about this utility, while it's nice and all -- it eats up about 4mb or RAM and can't be minimized. whereas regular ping takes only about 400k of ram :)

I have been noticing a regular drop due to inactivity (I assume) from myself just sitting in a station while making dinner or even from waiting on some of my members to all show up for whatever event we may have planned that day. I think you are right though. It definatly seems to be from a lack of interaction with the game since I dont get it when doing anything other then sitting. I'll give the pinger a shot. I have exactly the same problem, only the pinging didn't help:( Whenever i have no activity, the game loses connection to the server... If i stay in space with a module active (i.e. a hardener) there is no problem at all, i NEVER get disconnected!!! This problem seems to have occured since the bloodline patch, can't recall having this issue before that...
I also tried various other workarounds suggested in similar threads, nothing seems to work... as soon as i sit in a station and don't interact with the game (chat/hangar or whatever) for a few seconds --> POOF disconnected
My internet connection doesn't drop, Teamspeak doesn't lose connection or anything, and i can log back in at once...but this doesn't make it less annoying...
