Hi all,
First post here...glad to be part of such a positive and mature community (after WOW *shudder*) LOl.
Anyway I've a few questions that I'd appreciate some experienced feedback on so here goes -
Im on my first day and I'm playing a Caldari fighter char. My plans were (in this order) -
(1) Concentrate solely on getting basic frigate skills for Merlin or Kestrel to do some 0.6 or 0.7 rat hunting (2) As soon as I get the frigate, switch to Frigate IV and Cruiser II so I can get a caracal. (3) As soon as I get the caracal and decent complimentary skills I'll switch to the Learning skills for a few solid weeks and see how my play style develops
My questions are -
(1) do you think this order of plans is fairly decent? (2) In aiming to get a caracal, what would be a good build for this ship (so that I can start planning the skills and gear I need. After all what's the point of having a ship with no skills to put gear into it?)
Many thanks for taking the time to read and reply to this new players post! :)

1. Yes. Wise, you are.
2. Train in missile skills you must. Neglect not in electronics (E-War), engineering and navigation you must.

Avoiding the Yoda-esk language I would recommend at least training the INT, MEM, and PER related attributes up to 4. It will not take long at all to do at least that and will give those attributes a nice little boost reducing the time it takes to get to the level you want to be at before going after learning a bit more hardcore.

LoL I love how "Not that Long" to train a skill is 2 days... (for my lvl 4 learning skills). Even so getting them to 3 isn't to bad, like 10 hours or so...
Your plan is sound. But remember you need to train in and look up how to tank. As Caldari, you should be better at sheild tanking. There are many great threads and guides on how to do that, but I don't have any off hand and don't want to spend 3500 characters trying to give advice on something I don't use. Also remember to train up your weapon skills and afterburners etc etc etc... Lots of skills required to be a good fighter!
Good Luck! and Good Hunting!
Lone Starr: Helmet. So, at last we meet for the first time for the last time.
Dark Helmet: Before you die, there is something you should know about us, Lone Starr.
Lone Starr: What?
Dark Helmet: I am your father's brother's nephew's cousin's former roommate.
Lone Starr: What's that make us?
Dark Helmet: Absolutely nothing ù which is what you are about to become. Prepare to die. _______________

Nice, I just started last weekend and almost following your outline as well, Ave. But I just bought a Rifter and love it. IMO, looks a lot better than the Merlin, not to mention that it has an extra turret mount. Not so worried about the armor/shield at this level since it seems that offense dominates defense at these low levels.
Just in case you have yet to complete the storyline missions: the implant that is awarded to you after the completion can be sold for quite a nice sum (relative to what we lowbies are earning).
P.S. Believe it or not, the *purported* average age of WoW players is 28 years old. I suspect the average maturity is a bit less (:

Another learning skill you may consider training to 3 since it doesn't take too long and provides a nice general overall boost to learning anything is Learning. That'll add 2% per level to your attribute rating for training.
I've started a few characters since starting a few weeks ago and I try to get at least Mem, Int, and Learning all up to level 3 and go from there depending on what I was trying to accomplish.
Usually it works well to rotate the learning skills to get the best time out of training them: Instant Recall 1 Analytical Mind 1 Learning 1 recycle for level 2 and 3 and then do the Spacial Awareness.
Just thought I'd toss that in to the mix for you to consider :)
