CCP has something on their news page about the server but it makes absolutely no sense to me at all. I know I might not be the brightest spark but an english translation would help.
Quote: allowing CCP to remain true to its regiment of one unsharded virtual world with no instancing can hold.
Unsharded, Instancing... WTF do they mean?
-- He who died for his country has courage and shall henceforth be known as a hero. He who is willing to die for nothing is suicidal and shall henceforth be known as an outpatient.

ie one world, most other MMOGs have more than one "world" or shard, so that not all the players are on the same server at the same time
so you could have your whole corp in jita but not be able to interact with them or see them as they would be on another shard
CCP don't want that

IIRC: Unsharded means, only 1 world, unlike games like WoW, there are like a zillion diffrent servers you can connect to. Like if you connect to server A and do stuff there, it doesn't effect server B
In EVE, there is only one "server" and one world

So what is instancing then?

a shard = a mirror image of the world. So, imagine having anywhere between 5-1000 versions of the same eve universe, all running on different set of servers. No one can cross between these servers, and it crimps the community a LOT. I still say EvE's community is the best of ANY mmog, purely because EVERYONE has experiance of the same world. So when I say "I got killed by Zombie inc in the yulai incident" You don't have 95% of the population saying wtf was that? (well, we probably do, thats just cos it was a long time ago) but you get my point. RABBLE RABBLE RABBLE!!!

Edited by: Sikata on 30/03/2006 16:50:55 most mmo's are sharded. They use multiple copies of the same world for players to play on. Each shard is individual and has no interaction with any other shard. Instancing is along the lines of individual dungeons that only the initial person/group can enter. Deadspace may seem that way, but can actually be found and entered by others if they have way way too much time on their hands.
and I see I was way too slow in answering this, but I'm so incredibly lazy I'd rather say bah than delete all that I allready typed. Bah.

It looks like people already explained the shard/world word to you.
For the second, instances. These are seperate copies of the world. For instance, in some games, when you go into a dungeon, you'll go through a portal or door and just you and your group members are in the dungeon. If another group enters, they get their own copy of the dungeon and will never run into you. This helps in cases of quests or missions but also detracts from the 'one world' feel. Pros and cons.
Actually, though, EVE does have instances. Every time you dock in a space station, you're in the station but you'll never see another ship also docked in there. It's your copy, or instance, of the station. :)

Not 100% true, because you can interact with anyone in the same station by Trading items with them... Cheers,

Ok thanks. I think I understand their jargon now. So it's basically one universe on one server where nothing is closed to other players in respect to missions etc.
It would be nice to see other ships docked in a station though, it would give you more a feeling of not being alone when you dock.

You only see your ship because you only see your hangar, not a communal one. You also click on 'guests' on the right hand side and it tells you who else is docked at the same station. -- Olenir Theadorvin, Views expressed within the forum do not necessarily represent those of the corporation. Do they possibly mean regimen rather than "regiment?"

IIRC the Amarr and Minny stations I've been in really do have you in an individual hangars. But some Gallentean stations have multiple "pads" on which the ships rest. It would be great to see other ships there.
I'm almost always occupied with non-Guest-tab affairs, so there's never anything in the game UI that forces me to take note that others are in that station.
Anyway, this is off topic, but I agree with the others that it would be great to see other docked ships, where (as you've pointed out) the station models permit this.

imagine if you are following some guy into a complex and you want to kill him.
He activates the warp gate and warps out.
You follow 3secs behind.
When you drop out of warp he's not there because he's in his own "instance" and you in your own.
Instancing = MMO-RPG goes SP-RPG

Just FYI, the term "shard" is from Ultima Online's back story, about how some gem that contained the universe broke into pieces, creating alternate universes :P.
