ok, I've only been playing for a couple of days now and I'm trying to build up a bit of a cash reserve. I go out mining, come back with some ore, and if I sell the ore I'll make about 24,000 isk per trip.
Now if I refine that ore, I'll end up making about 19,000 isk. Why would I refine ore if I lose so much cash in doing so? Or is this just a symptom of the fact I've not left my starting zone except to run agent errands?
Help?

Its probably because:
1. You're selling to mineral buy orders, which are priced considerably lower than you could sell using sell orders. 2. Your refining skills are low.

You can use this ore calculator to judge whether to sell your ore or refine. It shows what you'll get from the minerals and the value of the ore. It uses prices averaged over the past few days (6, I think). I've noticed that ore prices seem to have been running above mineral prices for several weeks now. I have perfect refining for scordite and veldspar and it's still more profitable to sell the ore and buy my minerals on the market.

I like to mine and refine for manufacture. I have a couple of good BPO's which allow me to make stuff that sells for way over what it costs to make. Even though it would actually cost me less to sell the ore and buy the mins, it makes me feel a bit better that I worked my butt off to get the mins to make it when I sell it for extortionate amounts.
I don't take earning isk seriously, I'm just here to play the game not to become a tycoon doing it.

Check the market in the Region.. You will often find ore and minerals being purchased at 50% or less of their real value. You can often make decent money with a hauler and making 2-3 jumps to buy and sell minerals.
MOST of the time you should be able to make more refining and selling the minerals. Just make sure your at a station that provides a decent refine rate and check the market. In some stations people with perfect refine rates and standing will pay decent for raw ore, but I find this is the exception rather than the rule.

Greetings,
Sanguineous' question brought up something else that I have been pondering regarding minerals. First, I have not mined yet except for the tutorial, but I am getting a lot of modules from killing NPCs during kill missions for my agent. Most of the stuff I don't think I will ever use. I have seen several times here on the forums that I should refine the loot and sell the minerals. Question is how does one know when to refine or when to sell the item? Also are there skills I need to train to refine loot better so that I don't loose so much to taxes and waste?
Dark Shikari, or anyone who knows, how do you find out what you COULD sell the minerals for? Is it like other games where you have to just check the market day after day and come up with your own spreadsheet, or is there some resource I am missing that could help? I have seen the market average when I go to sell or buy something, but how was that calculated.
If I am just looking in the wrong forum, could someone be so kind as to point the way?

The market average is the average of all recent sales. This means that even if someone puts up tons of low-priced orders, this won't affect the average unless someone actually sells to them.
A good indicator of mineral price is just below the largest bulk sell order in a hub. If you went to that hub with the minerals and sold for just less than that bulk order, someone would probably buy your minerals relatively soon.

For the junk that you pick up (Civilian Afterburner, etc), the Item Database (on your left near the top) lists the minerals and their quantities recoverable from each item. This is the total minerals. You need to deduct the unrecoverable amount and the station's fee for reprocessing. You can find the deductions by asking the station for reprocessing and it will give you a quote (if you don't like the quote you can refuse it). It's likely that your unrecoverable will be quite high, percentage wise, because of your lack of refining skills. Anyway, you can get the quantity of minerals that you'll receive from the station. I check the market for prices by using the lowest sell price that I see on the Regional market. Using this, you can calculate the value of your minerals. Then check the market for the unit and see which is higher for you. Don't go by the market average, that's a useless number. If you're looking to improve your refining skill, you may want to stack these goods until you can get higher recoverability for them, and thereby get a higher ISK. In the case of more useful (say, 125mm rail guns or named modules) or more exotic items (say, Gurista tags), you're probably better off selling the modules.

Thank you Dark Shikari and Gadfly for those answers. Things are starting to make more sense. Another questions sense something Gadfly said reminded me. What is the world do I do with these Serpentis Ship Logs and Serpentis Tags? I guess I can refine them, but do people buy/use them for something? Should I be saving them up for something cool?
Oh, and sorry if I kinda hijacked the thread. I did not intend to...

#1 mistake in refining is refining at a station that refines at 30% rather than a 50% one.... you can see what the refining percentage is when you start to refine.

The logs are probably most useful reprocessed. The tags might be useful in satisfying some agent missions.
