Edited by: Butrus on 14/09/2003 00:47:07 Two Simple Ideas:
Split the current TRADE channel into two - one where people can post WTB requests, and one where people post WTS requests. If you want to go "shopping" you just tune into the WTS channel. If you're trying to sell something, you tune into the WTB channel and contact potential buyers directly.
Introduce an automatic charge to advertise on the trade channel (or new "WTS" channel). Charges could increase exponentially depending on the number of lines of text, to encourage "short" adverts. E.g. Free for 1 line (40 characters) adverts, 100k ISK for 2 line adverts, 200k ISK for 3 lines, 400k ISK for 4 lines, etc.
Please bump this topic if you think it would help ease congestion and help separate buyers and sellers so they can trade more easily.

Got my vote. Perhaps different channels for each type of things to be bought/sold? 1 channel for ship buyer/sellers, 1 channel for BPs, etc etc?

As has been discussed before, it doesn't quite work that way.
If I am looking to buy ABC Module, but I am also tryng to sell XYZ Module, I could not physically keep up with switching between 2 channels as the lag between switching channels would not allow me to see it all.
And then of course, there is the problem of WTT ABC for a XYZ; where does that person have to go in your scheme?
Eveyone agrees that the Trade channel has many postings, but those postings are both good and bad. Good that you have lots of choices, bad as you sometimes get the same ad every 18 seconds from some folks. Or the ads that are 31 lines long when your chat window is set for 15 lines of info. Agent Shield - a separate WTT channel would get around one of the concerns you raise.
Regarding channel switching, your play style probably differs from mine. I'm usually either in the mood for shopping, or in the mood for selling, so channel switching wouldn't be such an issue for me. ________________________________________ People of the Gallente Federation unite! Aflack - you've hit the nail on the head. The reason it's hard to keep custom channels alive is that they don't appear in a default listing such as the channels list.
I started a MINING channel for few weeks back and it proved very popular for a time, but required constant advertising to break the habits of the usual trade channel spammers. When I went on holiday I came back to find it had all but died. Success breeds success, but without official endorsement its a struggle to keep any channel alive and well known.
I'd like the option of advertising a channel so it appears when you click the Channels list, but there are problems with that potentially too. ________________________________________ People of the Gallente Federation unite! I aggree with the idea of charging people for posting long advertisements in #trade.
However I don't see the logic behind the #WTB and #WTS channels. If I want to buy an item I would monitor #WTS and most likely announce in #WTB (so I need to look at 2 channels). If I want to sell, I would post and monitor in #WTS and possibly check #WTB (again requireing me to look at 2 channels).
How about using color codes instead: e.g. red for posts with the keyword "WTB", green for "WTS" and white otherwise (possibly allowing multi-colored posts for ppl who have WTB and WTS in the same post)?

Thanks Xeno. It's difficult to convince you of the benefits of separate WTB and WTS channels if it doesn't suit your prefered games style, but I would just point to every newswpaper and hobbyist magazine where "For sale" and "Wanted" sections are kept deliberately separate.
I like the colour idea by the way - would have thought it was easy enough to implement (judging by Anarchy Online at least). Of course the real way to manage trade is with a database that you can post to or search online, rather than just catching the bargains that happen to be advertised when you're online and have nothing better to do than watch the Trade channel. ________________________________________ People of the Gallente Federation unite! Some people are trying to actually trade their items for other items not merely sell them.

Butrus, you have to admit though that the trade channel is 'not' really like a newspaper that can be read in section. The trade channel is open communications between players instantaneously, not like a newspaper that you have to call someone.
A newspaper is in your hands and will not get updated for another day, so you can view them all. In the trade channel, ads change quickly and people log off or log on; everything is fast. The newspaper is not.
Trade channel really shouldn't be broken up, but a newspaper makes sense to break up.
One last thing, the newspaper is a solo event. You read it, you either respond or not. With the trade channel, your 'newspaper' has changed before you finish chatting with a person on his/her ad.
