Check my reply on this post on "hosting your own EVE server".
Can someone tell me if this would be possible?
Here's my crazy idea:
if Seti@Home can do distributed computing, why cant EVE?
Make every client thats online host 1 station or 1 solarsystem or something, and watch the server requirements drop...
This would instantly solve all expandibility issues, because more players online = more server power (every player is a tiny server).
There would have to be some very good failover scenarios for ppl going offline. maybe sync the data of "your" station with 5-10 random other clients or something, and hope those 5-10 random ppl dont go offline at the exact same time...
A client could even try to locate the "server" closest to him (best connection) for the station/solarsystem he/she is in.

yeah. Main problem would not only be re-writing the code but building in a load of sa***uards to prevent hackers and cheaters.
And it's a constant battle from there on. Would eat up a lot of time constantly coming up with security patches to combat the ever changing hacker's methods. Would suck if CCP spent all their time on that.
I think if CCP wanted to expand they could probably afford the servers *** Spoon Thumb - I can scoop ice cream with my thumbs!

YES, leave it to CCP to buy extra servers... I mean, COME ON THINK ABOUT IT.. You're not paying 15 a month for nothing... If they used that idea, they'd have to pay you.. RIGHT?
lol, You're paying THEM to maintain servers, update the client, and give the best possible game performance... Let it stay that way, you pay enough as it is!

problem 1: hackers problem 2: LAG....i imagine a good chunk of the lag accociated with changing systems is due to your client being handed from one CPU to another....and this is currently done at worst case from one server to another linked with fiber channels....now imagine handing your client from one server in austrailia to another in the US accross the internet and god knows how many fubar interconnects...seti@home can due it because it is not a program that needs low latency...it send data what, once a day? Problem 3: Syncing...what if the node your playing on has a connection issue, everyone jsut crashes? what if you fighting someone and they "find out" your on one of their machines? they pull the plug...battle over..
the list keeps going, this will never happen, simply would never work...
