First off I'm a newb, so I dont have crazy skills...I have frigate 3 space command 3 and indy 1. Im wondering if I should go for the destroyer and try and fit a few mining lasers on it, or just wait to get into a cruiser?
The problem Im trying to figure out is using at least two mining lasers (more would be great), and still be able to defend myself...
Any advise would be greatly appreciated!

Omen would be a good choice for Amarr as the drones will kill the rats while you mine.
A much better alternative is to stop now, train caldari frig 4 then caldari cruiser and mine in an osprey. It gets a 20% mining bonus per cruiser lvl and can shot missles at rats.

I'm not familiar with the Amarr Destoryer, but I know that a "safe" miner is a destroyer in the low levels for Caldari, so it's equivilent in an Amarr destoryer would probobly work. I think people talk about 3 mining lasers in the Caldari Destoryer, so you might be able to get a similar setup for amarr. Try it out. :) - -
Please don't attack me. My ship is defragging it's hard drive. H.L. Mencken.

The Amarrians don't really have a 'good' mining frigate, but you could try a Tormentor. I'd skip the frigates all together (run some missions to earn some ISK) and go for the destroyer. Pop on 3 or 4 named miners (X-Cel Drilling Beam, etc.) and then as many small pulse lasers as your skills allow.
After the destroyer, you will want to go to the Omen (drones are the miner's best friend) and then to the Battlecruiser, and finally the Battleship.
If you are extremely serious about mining (especially mining in secure space) then skip the Amarr ships and go for barges.

Edited by: Twilight Moon on 03/04/2006 11:45:46 Edited by: Twilight Moon on 03/04/2006 11:45:17 Get Cruiser 3, then take a level in Battlecruisers. It'll only take you all a day or so.
Buy a Prophecy. Fill the high slots with 6x Miner II's and possibly squeeze on an Assault launcher (or a Small Remote Reapairer to fix up your drones). Do whatever you please with the mid and low slots as in 0.5 and above the rats just arent going to kill you.
5x Light drones in the drone bay, and launch them when you see NPC rats.
Then, win EVE. Obviously.
PS: Make sure you use Miner II lasers, massive difference in yield and you only need Mining Lvl 4 to fit them (and if you are a miner, you SHOULD have it). DOnt bother with any of the named Tech one Lasers, they are crap, and overpriced.

He's a new player with no skill points asking about which destroyer to mine with and you're telling him buy a BC and fit it with miner II's?
Seriously some of you guys seem to be so old you don't remember being a n00b at all.
If you can stretch to it I'd say an Omen, they cost about 4mill, if not get the destroyer because you'll have the turret points to fit a few miners and some small guns to defend yourself. They're also quite nippy if you want to mine and haul on the same ship, although mining to can and hauling in your Indy would be more effecient, if a little more risky.

I'm now up to the Procurer, but my first serious mining ship was a Cormorant. I'm sure you could fit out a Coercer similarly. It's got several Lowslots you can fit with cargo expanders (Need Hull upgrades 1) or CPU upgrades. For the mining lasers, I'd go with the EP-S Gaussian I Excavation Pulse since it gives best yield per CPU.
Also consider training Amarr Industrial as I think the Bestower is the best entry-level hauler. Re-package your Coercer and it will fit inside one. But will void the Coercer's insurance.
One last warning: don't mine into jetcans in busy systems, as they are lousy with ore thieves.
