Running off the back of the 'Prettiest Avatar Contest' idea in the other thread, I've created a way to find out once and for all who people think is the best, or the worst looking in the universe.
This is a 'Just for laughs' competition - there's no entry fees, no prizes, just bragging rights at being the biggest beauty , or biggest bufty in the universe.
It's been in testing the last couple of weeks, and current serving over 66 avatars currently without any problems so I'm opening it up more to the public. Those who have used it say it's a great way to relieve boredom in long flights, or when doing mining
Simply direct your in game browser to http://www.matryx.org.uk/eve/ to join the fight, or rate those who have already entered.
Hopefully with a little stress testing like this I'll be able to see quickly if my machine can handle it permanently, or if I need to find a dedicated server to run it from, but in the meantime - join the fight!
A few things to note:
You'll never see 'yourself' in the battle or rating mode, to prevent people rating themselves uber-positively all the time.
You can see your stats through the link in the top right, remember when you first join to 'activate' yourself otherwise you won't appear at all.
If you get the same pair come up in battle again, your new choice will overwrite the old one, so if you've changed your mind the old battle is erased and the new one takes it's place. Same goes for rating, so if you've changed your mind about a particular avatar you can re-rate it.
The site is currently low traffic (due to my very mild advertising in a few local channels) so don't expect to get huge amounts of ratings to begin with, and you'll need at least a few before you'll appear on the best/worst pages.
The site only runs in the in-game-browser. This to ensure that only one rating is counted per character and to verify no-one tries to edit each other's characters into the wrong gender / race etc.
An old screenshot can be seen Here, but there's more to it than just that now (e.g. single-person score rating page, best/worst leaderboards, stats page, and so forth)
Any feedback or suggestions, please send me in-game eve-mails ideally, or reply in this thread.
----------
To do list currently includes a public-stats page for users, so they can link other people to their own stats.
A suggestion that was given, which has been turned down, was the option to filter by just men/women. I turned down this idea because testing showed that the men just never got voted , and that's hardly fair now is it. ---------- I think I just had an evilgasm.... Are you a bufty or a beauty? Edited by: Navapia Wingblade on 05/04/2006 09:40:48 Could have sworn there was someone lower than you Xaroth last time I looked, anyway - I'm no longer top of the winners table .
Up to 78 users now : Coming soon - individual rating pages (by charid), so people can link to a "Rate me" in their blog (and their public stats page of course)
------------------
Edit: ok, added *specific* individual rating page. You can now link people to rate you specifically at http://www.matryx.org.uk/eve/rate_me.htm?charID=<your character id>
Easiest way to find <your character id> is to right click on your own face, select "capture portrait", then browse to your capture directory in your eve installation and find your portrait. The number before the .jpg is your character id.
----------
Edit 2: added specific avatar stats now : http://www.matryx.org.uk/eve/avatar_stats.htm?charID=<your character id>
Read my bio for a suggestion as to how to link to your stats / personal rating page.

I must say, that this yet again really proves how much fun you can get from the ingame browser, with the integration to pilot info etc.
On top of that, you did a very very good job - the site is easy to use, it's easy to signup and easy to get an overview over stats, winners, loosers etc..
A hot or not site - why didn't I think of that?
Seriously - you should had charged an entry fee of 100,000 ISK, and put prizes in the competition! Perhaps run it each month and then clear stats :) Maybe I should be your manager and help you make some money on this
Anyway - you put the IGB to it's right. Good job.
Best Regards Linn Shadowstorm EVE-Poker.com

Just wanted to thank everyone who has lent their support and taken part in this project. Just a few minutes ago we hit the 100 users mark!
On the drawing board now is a new stats page for 'race' stats, and someone suggested corp-stats as well so that is being looked into.
Thanks again, and keep those suggestions coming, they all replied to, even if I don't impliment them. ---------- I think I just had an evilgasm.... Are you a bufty or a beauty? Visit http://www.matryx.org.uk/eve/ using the in-game-browser to find out! |

I tried to access it but I got a "Connection Refused" error, maybe its just the time in the morning but can someone confirm that it is working (or is not working) -------------------------------- A proud fan of Nanofibers + Afterburners. Speed Kills. I'm a guy. Don't just look at the avatar and call me "she". |

It should work nearly all the time, but it runs off my own computer. If you get a 'connection refused' (as rarely as it happens) it usually means something's wrong with my ISP or (more currently) the damn thing's overheated while I'm work.
If it seems to go slowly, it'll mean I'm busy downloading/uploading something.
As an update: there are currently 394 people who have switched themselves on in this contest. There are 441 people in the system meaning the remainder have chosen not to appear (or just not realised that you have to opt-in from the settings screen.)
Thanks to everyone who has sent me nice emails about this :) It really makes me smile and think it was worth the effort to put in.
If anyone has any questions about how it operates - I've had a few queries already - feel free to drop me an eve-mail and I'll do my best to answer whatever questions you have. ---------- I think I just had an evilgasm.... Edited by: Navapia Wingblade on 25/07/2006 10:37:30 The 'competition' seems to be gaining popularity, and we've now passed the 500 active user limit (507 active at the time of posting this), I will over the next few days be adding a few new features. Mostly statistical, but there will be a couple of new selection criteria for battles/ratings, and a public stats page too for individuals.
I do have one request though - I've seen an increasing number of females flagging themselves as males (goodness knows why though). Please don't do this - it just makes you look foolish and I'll reset your stats when I have to 'fix' you.
----
A lesser known feature - if you direct your browser to http://www.matryx.org.uk/eve/rate_me.htm?charID=xxxxxxxxxx where xxxxx is your character ID - you can link people directly to a page to rate your avatar. You will of course need to have been set up correctly (i.e. active / correct bloodline / correct gender) - but it means you can have some text in your bio saying "Rate me @ Avatar Wars" as a link straight to your rating page. Just check my bio for an example - you can find a link to my character at the bottom of every page on Avatar Wars.
The easiest way to find your character ID is to right click on your own face, select "Capture Portrait", then look in your eve/capture directory for the newly created file. The number in the filename is your character ID.
----
Recent changes: You now need 10 ratings or battles to show up in the relevant stats tables. Since there is enough traffic now, this should filter out the initial spikes for new users getting good or bad ratings straight away. Some database changes, but nothing you need know about yet because it doesn't do anything \o/
----
Currently, out of 507 active users, we have 206 females and 301 males. 64 are Amarr, 192 Caldari, 164 Gallente and 87 Minmatar. There have been over 54,000 battles and more than 10,000 ratings.
----
Edit: Public stats pages added. Just follow the same instructions as for the rate_me page, but use the following structure: http://www.matryx.org.uk/eve/avatar_stats.htm?charID=xxxxxxxx ---------- I think I just had an evilgasm.... Update time:
Added: A message to remind people if they haven't enable themselves for fighting in the war. A fair few never realised you had to 'opt-in'. Added: some basic sa***uards to prevent an influx of amarr-males from people who couldn't be bothered to set themselves up properly. Added: Race Filtering - Switches the entire site to only show the race you have selected. For battles, ratings, scoreboards, and stats page. Added: Server statistics page... pretty useless info here, but it was requested. Added: Basic Race Stats (on the server stats page, with a 'race filter' active). Added: Recognition for those who have been kind enough to donate <3 Added: A link to get stats up for an avatar you have on screen. Added: A link to report an avatar as having erroneus settings. If you notice they have incorrect race / bloodline or that their gender is set wrongly (the gender they report themselves as is described in the link) then please click this link to let me know.
Still to come: More race stats, including a detailed breakdown versus other races. ---------- I think I just had an evilgasm.... Are you a bufty or a beauty? Visit http://www.matryx.org.uk/eve/ using the in-game-browser to find out! |
