almost but not quite. it goes back to uo yes, when they were balancing. at one point swords got nerfed very badly, and everyone was saying "its like we're fighting with nerf bats"
it stuck.
If I recall, players in "Ultima Online" were experiancing an issue where a certain developer had invisioned a design where the insanely powerfull weapons would be "balanced" although the effect was so diminished players were no longer able to kill each other, or the helpless, with little effort.
Being that the "player killers" had invested so much time into an existing mechanic the change created the notion they were now "fighting with nerf toys" 'cs of the greatly reduced damage.
The term "nerf" has now been adopted by all teh 1337 lewt nublets crying about ne thing that changes game play regardless of the outcome. Player even use the term to describe something that _was_ broken and becomes fixed.
Bottom line, if a change in gaming mechanics alters a functionability some players will claim it's been "nerfed" regardless of the benefit or effect.

A what? Really? I don't think I've ever heard of people calling a 'buff' to something a nerf, unless they twist it around saying they're actually nerfing another faction if its a PvP style game.

I perfer the term "gimped". Its less politically correct, but better than "nerfed" by far.

Does this make me the forum grandpa for remembering playing with Nerf (American style) footballs, Nerf golf balls, Nerf baseball bats (which my brother and I did attack each other with), Nerf Boomerangs (with three "wings"), I think there was a Nerf soccerball (real football)... Yeah, Nerf was the stuff to have in the nineties. There was also Nerf ping-pong, and Nerf launchers (tubes that you'd pull one end back to "load" it, and then slam it forward and let the compressed air launch the small Nerf ball in the barrell) Then they started in with the guns. I went from the launchers to the Nerf bow, and then guns... I think.
Not that I played with the things or anything. At all.

Earliest I remember the word "nerf" was from Empire Strikes Back when Lea calls Han a "stuck up, scruffy looking, Nerf Herder." .....

"Nerf" seems common across the MMOGs I've played.
The other MMOG common term, "Zerg" (*), for overpowering numbers doesn't seem to be used in Eve, instead "Blob" seems the Eve standard for overwhelming odds.
(*) I only found out the other day that this was taken from a race from StarCraft that act in unison in mass numbers to overcome a foe. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zerg
"Gank" .. at a guess "Gang Kill"?
We don't all shout "Ding" in corp chat everytime we complete a skill train too. Which is nice.

heh, looking at that wiki page I saw a link at the bottom for 'twinking', I think this is the only thing I miss about EQ, having said that you can do some pretty heavy twinking in EVE also, seeing as named modules have lower skill requirements then tech2 modules

In my corp/alliance I hear "zerg" in reference to blobs of "lesser" ships like say, a ton of tech 1 frigates/cruisers coming your way. This is opposed to a "blob" of a bunch of battleships/HACs/t2 frigates. --- Our greatest glory is not in never failing, but in rising up every time we fail. - Emerson |

No, zerg is more like rushing and swarming. Blob is typically a force that sits in one system and doesn't move. It started out during the FA invasion days I think.. not sure :(

Edited by: Isidriel on 05/04/2006 07:41:25 "Nerf" as it's used now pre-dates EQ/UO by quite a few years, since PvP MU*s came way before EQ/UO...
(most current online gamers don't pre-date EQ/UO though, so it's understandable how the origins of "nerf" would be attributed to something in EQ/UO's timeframe) -----
