Carl Sagan wrote: "Perhaps the most wrenching by-product of the scientific revolution has been to render untenable many of our most cherished and most comforting beliefs. The tidy anthropocentric proscenium of our ancestors has been replaced by a cold, immense, indifferent Universe in which humans are relegated to obscurity.
But I see the emergence of our consciousness of a Universe of magnificence, and an intricate, elegant order far beyond anything our ancestors imagined. And if much about the Universe can be understood in terms of a few simple laws of Nature, those wishing to believe in God can certainly ascribe those beautiful laws to a Reason underpinning all of Nature. My own view is that it is far better to understand the Universe as it really is than to pretend to a Universe as we might wish it to be."

Pale Blue Dot :
From this distant vantage point, the Earth might not seem of any particular interest. But for us, it's different. Look again at that dot. That's here, that's home, that's us. On it everyone you love, everyone you know, everyone you ever heard of, every human being who ever was, lived out their lives. The aggregate of our joy and suffering, thousands of confident religions, ideologies and economic doctrines, every hunter and forager, every hero and coward, every creator and destroyer of civilization, every king and peasant, every young couple in love, every mother and father, hopeful child, inventor and explorer, every teacher of morals, every corrupt politician, every "superstar," every "supreme leader," every saint and sinner in the history of our species lived there GÇô on a mote of dust suspended in a sunbeam. The advantage of a bad memory is that one can enjoy the same good things for the first time several times.
One will rarely err if extreme actions be ascribed to vanity, ordinary actions to habit, and mean actions to fear. |

Carl Sagan was one of the greatest humans who ever lived. He wanted us all to be touched by the majesty of the universe.
Brian Cox makes shows about himself and includes a bit of baby science in there as well

I enjoyed Wonders of the Universe. I thought it was pretty well made. And by work I mean popularizing science and putting it in the minds of people... I think Brian Cox has done a lot of good work in that area.
But you don't need to be all bitter vet in this thread ;) |

Carl Sagan had a vision for humanity that no longer seems to exist. A truly inspiring, and charismatic figure that saw the universe in all it's beauty and all it flaws and yet had a unshakable curiousity. A scientist with the soul of a poet, one of the greatest Americans of the 20th century. |

Sagan was the greatest communicator of our time. He could speak about any scientific discipline and make it fascinating. I wish more people regarded people like him as role models. |

My favourite quote of him when he was being interviewed on radio by a rabid creationist :-

Went and bought the DVD set of COSMOS a while back, still have a last few to watch but it is a great series even now.
Dis'ing Brian Cox here though is a bit pointless, seeing as how the guy picked up his battered copy of the COSMOS book and explained to everyone it was what caught his imagination and sent him on the journey to Astrophysics. You need a club with "im updating and spreading the message..." written on it or something ?
Sagans ideals are usurped by business nowadays with little in the way of explorative experimentation and endeavor in this field, due to the lack of money, if it isnt going to be 'profitable' research.
Which leads us to The Daily Mail science pages and the desperate claims of failed and flawed 'expensive' research.
Happy Birthday anyway Carl - if my brain was bigger and my wallet deeper i would follow you with a passion. "caught on fire a little bit, just a little." |
