What's the purpose of planets? Are they mineable? Are they just for decoration?

They are there so the stations can be around the moons which are around the planets which are around a star which... You get the picture.

Actually, think of them as placeholders till the dev team gets planetary flight enabled.

Oveur likes to play a quick game of 8-ball so they whip out their titans and start knocken the planets around till the black hole eats em all.. thats why we have server downtime every day too.

Currently they aren't of much use... long-term plans for them are:
"Simple Planetary Interaction
A probable first step for planetary interaction, where you manage the planet from a Station amongst other things.
Moderate Planetary Interaction
This would feature flying over planets and interacting with the planetary surface. A probable second step in planetary interaction.
Full Planetary Interaction
Planetary RTS or other hybrid game form. Yarr. The long-term crazy professor phase of planetary interaction."

I don't think space would be very believable if there were only asteroid clutters and moons, circling no visible center of gravity...
While it is not a rare sight IRL, having only moons and belts would be a rather boring sight.
It's the same as stars, by the way, you cannot interact with them in any way, and yet, you don't ask the same question for them? Ask yourself why :)

thats not entirely true. you can interact with them. but only as far as warp to them.

by the end of this year they should provide specific materials for buildign stuff - in 0.0 they will have colonies and special advantages etc etc.

I think if you were to start with the whole landing thing, you'd need a seperate class of specialised ship, dropships or whatever. A raven isn't the most aerodynamic bird and you'd think taking one into an atmosphere, assuming we're not having starwars 'all ships can do anything and go anywhere' rules, would just result in a nice big crater.
