Fantastic guide, though I tend to do range scanning myself

hate to ask a stupid question but many times I scan an empty system to practice finding things and I find abandoned ships. The other day there was a battleship and a hauler I assume in a safespot.
How do I find these goodies if they are not in a belt? A friend of mine ran his power down so he would only warp half way between two planets, then headed down for 5 hours at full speed while he was afk. THats where he safespots his ships while ratting the system and hasnt left in days.
How would I warp to someone's stashed ships? --------------------------------------------- "Do your worst, for I shall do mine"

This question isnt stupid, but to bust up safespots you would need to use scan probes. I dont understand them enough to tell you how to use them but there is a guide somewhere if you search for it. The astrometrics skill allows you use scan probes. How fun is mining veldspar? THIS FUN!!! |

Actually, an object will only show in the Distance column if it's 'on grid' or a celestial object like a stargate or station.
So if you're 1000km from a stargate and scanning towards that stargate, you might see whatever ships are on that gate on the scanner, but the only thing you'll see with a distance is the stargate (assuming you have stargates set to be shown on the scan). Usually if you get within 300-400km, the object will be 'on grid' and will show a distance. That distance depends on a number of factors which I won't get into.
I'd also mention that the scanner isn't just for Piracy, it's a must for PvP in general. I've never once pirated, but I use the scanner all the time in Syndicate scanning gates from tactical bookmarks looking for gate camps to avoid and for targets to kill. And in case it comes up, there's no such thing as Piracy in Syndicate.
Otherwise, nice tutorial!

I am not exactly savvy about doing stuff, but it would be great if somebody could do either a gallery or a small video with background commentary on how to use the scanner.

I don't have anything but the text list when I open my scanner, how can I make the little visual aid with the green cone show up?

it seems like the little visual aid was taken out with this new revelations patch. the visual aid was not very good quality anyway. almost like a DOS-based application as it was only 2D and too small to see well. just use the zoom out button to see the solar system in 3D.

Use the f11 key. It will bring up maps on the right side of your display. The bottom map has the directional display your looking for.
It isn't how big your ship is, but how you fly it that counts! |

Great scanner guide, been useing directional scanner for along time.
Ran into a problem tonight that I cannot seem to find a solution for.. What is the setting (is there one?) that disables or enables the hold alt to highlight celestial objects (like moons)??
Two of my charaters, holding alt works just fine, highlights the moons/other and gives the box on my ship as it should. Another account does not. I've looked for every setting possible, even logged in my other account on that client to make sure it wasn't a bugged client, still works great for my 1st account.
I spent a good hour compareing settings in the options, overview, etc. Nothing seems out of place. Any ideas?????
obtw, I was trying to teach another person to scan, and her's wasn't working either, so i check my other charaters to make sure it worked for them, and low and behold, it didn't!! *ACK*
Thanks!
