I have recently been thinking of trying out manufacturing. Being new to the game (here for a little more than a month) I decide to start looking at Tech 1 blueprints and how much money I could make off of them. However, I've found something rather disturbing.
For many of the blueprints I looked at, even if I was somehow wasting no extra minerals, and was buying all my minerals at the cheapest price on the market, the price to make the ship is above what the ship will sell at!! I've checked with the Imicus, Tristan, Incursus, and Hobgoblin Drones. With a Cap Booster 200 I can turn a decent profit in the Reigon I'm in, but go to the next one and the prices are again under production costs!!
I'm puzzled. Are people mining their own minerals and not realizing that they can get more money actually selling the minerals on the market? Are these ships being given out as rewards and people just want to dump them? Are they being sold at a higher price elsewhere? Are there skills that enable construction with even less minerals that are stated as ideal in the BPO? Or does my math just suck?

Yes to all above.
There have been people producing from the beginning who do not understand the concept of "opportunity cost". They mine their own minerals and don't consider the value of them in their next best use, ie. on the market.
There are also people getting quantities of ships and other things from mission rewards, or in fact as loot on these missions. It's not uncommon if you're running missions to get random T1 ships as offers or bonuses. People often toss these on the market at a price they know will sell quickly.
If the numbers are right, what you could consider doing is buying and refining the goods, if they're sufficiently underpriced.

You should try having a look at the prices in places that are not crowded with these sell orders. There, you will find profits even if they wont sell as fast as in the crowded places. -

As a beginner you're going to want high turnover, so consumables are the way to go (ammo, drones, cap booster charges).
Location can be used to your advantage too. Mission runners will pay a bit extra to avoid having to trek over to the trade hub for stuff. And people with low sec status aren't able to come into high security level systems at all, so try selling stuff on the border systems (have an insta out of the system though!)

Are you sure you're looking at the absolute minimum of minerals needed? The amount depends on both the Mineral Level and your Production Efficiency. If you're unsure the Item Database always lists the amount needed if both ML and PE are perfect. |

Thanks for the advice everyone. I think I can make a profit with Cap Boosters, I was just puzzled by the prices and wondering if there was something about manufacturing that I was missing.

As an additional warning; make sure you do check the 'Price history' column in the market window. If the product is available, and there are hardly any sales, it might not be a good arcticle for manufacturing.
And IMHO, making profit with manufacturing in Eve isn't so much about minimizing production expenses; it's about finding the customers willing to pay good margins.
Hence (as about every sticky guide suggests): look for system with active (rich) agent runners and produce items they need but can't get from loot. Or find hubs close to 0.0 without factories (like Agil), and supply non-loot goods there (like basic ships).
