I know this idea has been suggested before a fair few times, but what was the consensus on being able to use tractor beams in pvp scenarios against other ships (CCP/playerbase acceptance)?
Im thinking being able to drag people away from gates/stations etc or towards myself (or even reverse the 'beam' and use it to push perhaps?) Admitadly would require its own code and some formula using beam energy output, your mass and thrust, their mass and counter thrust and so on, but would be funny being able to tow ships for real.
Alternative maybe a 'harpoon gun' or something similar.
Probably would be a few abuses like instalock and tractor beam pulls by 20 people means you instantly get dragged 30k away or something silly but it worked so well for scorpion in mortal kombat

Well, since Eve is SOOOO similar to Mortal Combat, that arguement is beautiful.

I like the idea but i have seen this abused in other games very easily. An example would be a battleship using it to keep that otherwise annoying intercepter in its optimal range. Or have 2 or 3 ppl using them as holding beams. Hard to warp if you can't turn because your being pulled in the oposite direction.
While it would have some nice uses I believe in EVE it would be abused more often than not.

Yeah I always liked the idea myself. I would also like to see salvage drones in game too. It would be cool to pin your target down and let loose the salvage drones on them to actually forcefully take a ship instead of always having to destroy them. No one can hear you scream in space, so STFU and die already. |

It would have to take a *lot* of CPU and powergrid so that it won't simply replace webs.
Having the enemy move in the direction that you want them to is infinitely better than just slowing them down.
Probably too exploitable. ------------------------------------------- "Never underestimate the power of language."

That's what I think tractor beams should do. Assuming that CCP finally puts ship propulsion strength to good use (I'm told their only use was taken out of the game a long time ago?), some ships would naturally be vulnerable and others not so much. Lots of room to tweak for balance. Plus, they should be the optimal choice for restraining floating pods.

ya, its one of those cool things you wish you had but when you investigate further you think about the way eve physics works and vectored thrust, lack of sliding and such (that all ships must turn then accelerate etc etc), the way warping works requiring a forward acceleration on so on.
i guess it is one of those things that would have to require feedback from the target about the amount of active tractor beams on it already.
ah well - will bury this one to the 'nice idea, impracticle 'can of worms' implementation.
Just shows how bored I get when meant to be composing my thesis

Edited by: Dylatar on 06/04/2006 23:14:48 Edited by: Dylatar on 06/04/2006 23:11:42 It would be nice enough to have a mod which would be able to take abandoned ships with you (like shuttles abandoned infront of stations).
Instead of boarding a ship and fly away with it(and you always have to leave anything else except you approach in a pod) it should be possible to tow them away.
Maybe that would be use for a new tow ship class. For e.g. cruiser sized, bonus on using a tow mod (hislot) and penalty on speed depending on the towed ships mass when using it.
First you should have to board the ship, and after that change back to your tow ship and take it with you, without leaving back any shuttle or noob ship. That also would be a nice addon for piracy when they accepted a ship as payment for a victims life.

Using the tow tractor beam should it make possible to take a ship with you, without having the skills to (fly) board the ship. But I think this option really should be limited to be only used on a specialised tow ship class.
dont know about tow ships though. no ship should be able to tow any ship bigger than itself or pods |

Why not? Never seen a tugboat pulling a cruiseship along? Just a matter of "propulsion strength".

We're tried playing can tennis (per say) before now with tractor beams. While hardly rocket science its worth pointing out that stasis webifiers work on jet-cans slowing down the tractor beams rate of pull speed.
Another random factoid of the day for you :)

I would agree on not being able to tow a pod though. Since they are so extremely small the 'harpoon' would mis it constantly. And on the lucky chance of actually hitting it, the pod would break and have the same result as being podded. www.mivex.nl/test/sig.Richard%20Bashir.gif |
