I've popped a destroyer and got a sec hit of 2% for that. However i dont think the two cruisers i popped gave me any such loss. Why is that? Do you get an extra hit if you blow up a smaller ship (i'm in a cruiser)?
And i remember that i sometimes could see the fitted modules of a ship if i'm close enough or something. So under what circumstances can you see the fitting of another ship (without a special scanner)?

Question 1: It may have to do with their secruity status. If their sec stat us under -5, than its no hit towards you. Also it depends on what the sec of the system is. Not sure if it goes down, but in empire space you take a hit (assuming that your target isn't -5) but in 0.0 there is no hit.
Question 2: Only way I know to do this is w/ a ship scanner. You can though look at their ship and tell what guns they have, if you know what they look like. _______________

1) Need more details here. :) There are a lot of factors here including what the sec status of the system you where in and if your at war or if the others had a -5 or lower sec status.
2) You can use a ship scanner to see the exact modules someone is using... You can also look at the ship and see what guns it has by using look at. ;) But unless you realy know your guns it doesnt help to much.

1) No sec standing was near -5 , no war was declared. The cruiser kills were in .1-.3, not sure. The destroyer in 0.4.
2) I remember that i sometimes had another tab at the ship information, called... hmm, probably modules. I didnt have a ship scanner. Weird.

on noob ships it shows a "modules" tab, but it al;ways shows a civ gun and a basic miner, no matter what they have fitted =/

You also get the Modules tab when you show info on your own ship.

Only the largest kill within a period of time tends to count. It does for raising sec status anyway. In 0.0 you never lose sec status ---- EVE-Central.com | Obsidian Technologies - 0.0 Manufacturing, Defense and Logistics. We're hiring! Mail me |

I assume all this fights were in Empire (> 0.0), not in war and no target was an outlaw.
If somebody starts shooting at you, and you then return fire and pop him, you take no sec hit.
If you start shooting at them, and they return fire before they pop, you get a 0.5 % sec hit.
If you start shooting at them and pop them without them shooting back, you get a 2 % sec hit.
If you pop a pod, you get a 12.5 % sec hit.
So, my guess would be that the scenario was either 1 or 2. If it was 2, the hit is usually too small too be noticable by looking at the abbreviated security status.

What Micheal said^^
Also, if you "look at" a ship you can "see" the type of guns it has. You do need to learn how to recognize all the different types though.
