hi all, been training sentry drones. am currently training to max out range and damage, as well as omni for tracking/range. recently my friends wanted me to help them out doing lvl4's. i was kinda scared since i never done lvl4 before but i went in and helped with worlds collide. they did all the tanking, so i tried shooting at machariel bs's and cruisers. to my dismay, even at 30km my gardes barely took off a sliver of damage. then my friends in their ravens would launch a volley and take down half their shields.
i dont have max skills but i have very good skills. what am i doing wrong? i've tried target painter, that seems to help. my friends said maybe the rats just have high resist against the damage types i'm doing.
please no flame war about sentry drone range its been done. i know how max out their range. please help. more damage, please!

At 30km there certainly wouldn't be a tracking problem as they should be able to track a BS with 1000 m/s transversal. So the problem is simply raw damage.
1. Yep, angel ships has high resist vs thermal. Use explosive ones against them.
2. Sentry drones, at least until we have T2 ones, really don't do much damage. You'll need turrets on your ship as well to reach the damage your friends do.
Am I forced to have any regret? I've become the lie, beautiful and free In my righteous own mind I adore and preach the insanity you gave to me |

Slap some dual 250 rails on it and a couple of damage mods. Btw don't normal heavy drones have higher dps than the sentry ones ? Just be carefull you don't aggro everything :)

ive got worlds collide now, and whenever i take out my drones (soloing it) it always seems that they aggro the angel group no matter what ! mehp. now i just leave the drones in my bay but its kinda stupid that they aggro the angel group which is at least 110 km away when im focusing on the serpentis group.

Edited by: Gericault m0id on 08/04/2006 14:20:08 Train for T2 heavies instead. Definitely worth it; mission specific drones with a mission specific tanked Dominix is a very good combination.
Edit - I tried out sentry drones on some corp mates the other day and the only real use I can see is if you camp something and get some tacklers in to immobilize the target. Other than that, the only benefit over T2 drones is that they're a hell of a lot cheaper.

All sentry drones have VERY DIFFERENT Optimal, Falloff and Tracking Speed. Check that before deciding which drone to pick for particular situation.
Gardes kill well at 30 km provided that you have at least one Omnidirectional Tracking Link fitted (better 2 or 3), that and a skill Drone Sharpshooting trained to at least lvl4.
And of course you also have to have AT LEAST lvl3 in Sentry Done skill, and lvl4 in Drone Interfacing... Otherwise yes, prolly they are much worse than guns....
And btw I find my Gardes killing stuff much faster than t1 Ogres when at optimal so I wouldn't say that sentries have lower dps...

Reread yer post. Yeah its just a damage type issue. Gardes should hit at 40km fine with a couple omni links. Try bouncers instead against angels, with the added perk they can hit farther out.

I've found sentry drones to be *GREAT* in some situations. able to instapop, or 2 volley pop frigates in the right range... take huge chunks out of cruisers...
but its gotta be both the right damage type, and the right range.
like rogue drone harassment... can do almost all of the killing, from the warp in point, with Garde's, (I don't like curators much... and somehow don't seem to do as well)

Sentry drones will damage instantly upon being released: heavies will have to plod over to their target (about 750m/s isn't it?) before they can begin pwnage, and again for every target after the first.
All depends on the situation really. :S -------------------------------------------------- Loyalty, Integrity, Honour. |
