Will Valkyrie be in the same rough category as the old Tie Fighter games? Graphics aside, obviously. I'm thinking specifically of the two major gameplary elements, dueling and missions. Or will it be more like EVE, with an open world in which there will be hunting down of targets and fighting (not necessarily "dueling")?
Will it have the same sorts of ways to target enemies (several different ways, some not dependent on line of sight)? Or will it be more dogfighterish, i.e. needing to visually track targets and the like?
Very much looking forward to this. Once a year I dig out Tie Fighter gold and run through the missions a few times. I'd love to see a more advanced/pretty version.
Also, this subforum just snuck right in! I didn't notice it until today. |

I loved that in Tie Fighter you could, voluntarily, turn off the electronics and turn to visual tracking (through windows, which Valk's system will obviously be a better version of). However, I was never good enough for the WW2 fighter style visual tracking, but it was always cool that you could strip yourself down to that sort of basic skill.
BTW, there is one mission where in TF where you are in a basic tie fighter and there is a huge list of bonus targets, including destroyers. I've never been able to get the last target, don't suppose you remember!? |

But yeah, that's what I'm hoping for in Valkyrie, really having to know how to fly. |

One of the most memorable moments for me in TIE Fighter was the mission that started the "betrayal" of one of the admirals in the storyline. Flying in a non-shielded TIE Interceptor and going up against 3-4 TIE Advanced (shields and way faster). It took several tries and lots of pressure on the joystick to out-maneuver and get behind those TIE Advanced with the fragile Interceptor.
Lots of fun.
I'd like to see Valkyrie become like DUST514, but at the same time, I'd like to see it as a separate entity. Simply because the single player space combat sim can really get the player involved into the story. TIE Fighter/X-Wing, Wing Commander, Decent: Freespace did all this VERY well. By using real-EVE events and storylines that have already been told Valkyrie could be done in that same light, and deliver a very unique "EVE" feel. I'd definitely play it, just to get a chance to play and learn the stories in EVE.
If they go the other way and try to integrate somehow into the current EVE universe, I feel like it would take away from the potential of the game as a whole. Considering the current EVE game engine couldn't possibly allow twitch gameplay (server ticks slower) then some huge revamp would have to happen with the EVE game engine (which might still be a path CCP is working towards), I would feel like it would fall into a mediocre gameplay with a gimmicky integration.
So my opinion on this would be a more TIE-Fighter/Wing Commander like game. Single Player (maybe with a multiplayer deathmatch or co-op) Space Combat Sim. |

Oh I definitely remember that mission. Thrawn's betrayal. The other great part of that mission is that you're in the middle of a mine field! Good times!
One of the things I've always wished EVE had that Tie Fighter had was the combat simulator. I think it is the one thing that, if added into EVE, could make a significant improvement in new player retention. Everyone needs a chance to get experience in a ship without losing all their hard earned assets. I can't think of any logical in-game reason why the EVE universe wouldn't want to train pilots before sending them out in ships. The skill training is supposed to represent that expertise, but the reality is that the ingame skill is useless without real world practice.
I fully expect that if Valk is good enough, I won't be playing "regular" EVE anymore. I'm tired of every tiny action requiring so much planning and grinding. |

Gosh I hope it's similar to Tie Fighter. Or at least the Wing Commander games. A fun mix of "simulation" and arcade action without the stupid "unlimited missiles" and "camera in the air" aerodynamics we see in "games" like Ace Combat... Remember this. Aww, and here I was thinking that this was a "TIE Fighter vs Valkyrie Fighter: THE STATS!" thread... Blessed are those that carry the Empress' Light; with it they destroy the shadows |

Okay, so I was 14 at the time but I completed the full challenge in TIE Fighter where you take out the waves of each ship. I think I worked my way through the Z-95s, Y-Wings, A-wings, B-Wings, X-Wings, Tie Fighters, Interceptors, etc. I can't remember what the last ship I took out was, but I know I had to use the reloading transport MANY TIMES to repair my ship.
Full disclosure, I think I beat it in a Gunboat. But the feeling of accomplishment at that moment. I wish I had recorded that moment of victory to show my wife. She'd get a big kick out of it. |
