Hello everyone,
I have been playing for a few weeks, and my problem is not that I can't decide what I want to do. I tried a bit of everything in Eve, and I practically enjoy many aspects of the game such as mission running, exploration, and mining. Now I want to focus on these three fields. However, I am not sure which skills I should prioritize first. I can already fly mining barges, destroyers and scan relic/data sites. What in my mind right now is:
1) To train mining skills until I can fit t2 strip miners with crystals. 2) To train social skills for better standing and grinding. 3) To train scanning skills to scan down signatures faster as well as to boost virus coherence. 4) To train for flying cruisers/battlecruisers 5) To train combat/core skills
Is it wiser to focus on one area first until I get lvl5 or is it better to get to lvl 4 in everything? I felt like the second approach is better since I tend to switch my activities. In this case, what skills, in your opinion, I should prioritize first? Now I understand that it really depends on what I want to do/master first. However, I am just wondering what would be more effective or wiser approach? So what I am aiming for is to participate in incursions and pvp activities in the future while being able to supply the needed funds for myself.
Thanks!

Well, that is part of your adventure to make your own priorities and live with consequences of choices you make. Nobody can really make those decisions but you.
If you are not really sure if it is worth to fully commit to training something to max I would propose to train enough to be able to use and fit ships/modules you need to do particular activities and just do them for some time until you can say "yes I like that" / "no I don't really like that" and then plan your training according to that. For example there is not much sense in training for t2 mining stuff for a month (or whatever it takes to get top level mining ship/modules/bonuses) only to discover shooting rocks is not really your cup of tea.
There is no silver bullet and whatever you will choose to do it will always be at cost of not doing something else. But you are free to make whatever choices you feel are right for you and change your mind at whatever moment. I am not my skills but... http://eveboard.com/pilot/Schmata_Bastanold |

You know how I trained my first character?
Background: I knew nothing about the game. Literally, not a thing. There were no tutorials back then and I didn't even know to start a skill training until nearly a week into the game.
What I ended up doing was setting the skill list filter to show all skills and trained whatever ones had a green check mark. It actually ended up being not a bad idea as I had the skills to try various things and careers. I don't recommend it, but it's an option so I put it out there. The skill sheet was also quite a bit smaller back then as well.
As to your specific situation, mining and mission running are at odds as to skills. Not much overlap. Missioning and exploration have a lot of overlap. You might want to lean towards industry or combat skills at first, but not both. It's up to you which you want to prioritize.
It's also up to you if you want to specialize at all, or just be a jack of all trades. Or you can hyper specialize and spend a year just training to be a perfect Assault Frigate pilot, for example. Lots of possibilities.
But the choice has to be yours. To quote Morpheus, "...I can only show you the door. You're the one that has to walk through it."

You can't go wrong with training core skills.
The skills you will use on any character are:
- Basic trade skills (just one day of training for starters, including Contracting 2) - Fitting skills to 5 (Power Grid Management, CPU Management) and Weapons Upgrades to 4 (5 soon, but 4 in the first month) - Hull Upgrades 4 and whatever the skills are that add 5% per level to your armor and shields (to 4 each; 5 can wait)
I'm not a jack of all trades, master of none, but I got to at least competent at everything I do then specialized heavily in Gallente cruisers. https://forums.eveonline.com/default.aspx?g=posts&t=238931 - an idea for a new form of hybrid PVE/PVP content. https://forums.eveonline.com/default.aspx?g=posts&t=318489 - Proposal for a new type of tech 2 Destroyer If you want to mine in highsec, read www.minerbumping.com. |

Whole point of EVE is to make decisions on your own and stick by them and deal with the consequences of said decisions.
Ergo, we cant tell you what to skill first as we are not you. So prioritise what you want to do first / most / most effective. Want to have some chat in game? Need help to get into the game as a new player? Just join my channel: Crazy Dutch Guy |

2) / 4) & 5) have heavy overlaps (train into a cruiser to run level 2s, then put a bit of time into social skills for standings gains).
3) will re-use some of the skills
1) Has a skill-set unto itself, so if that's a direction you want to take make sure you like it first. "Do not touch anything unnecessarily. I don't think there is any problem in bouncing around the skill training from one career to another as you see fit. The skill training can have years worth of interest.
Do what you want, as said by other posters, but here's an opinion.
1) Not worth it unless you love mining. The yield gain isn't that great, it can take a lot of time to train for all the crystals, and it's a pain to buy and carry them around in the ship. 2) These are useful for industry and PvE and don't take very long 3) Most skills are good enough at 3, but it's worth putting in the time to get the T2 hacking modules if you explore outside of hi-sec.
4 & 5) These are the most compatible with what you said is your long term goal. You might chat with some incursion recruiters and ask them what ship they prefer recruits to be trained for. |

Thank you all for your responses. I should have clarified that I am enjoying all three these fields in their own way so I wasn't really asking which area I should choose, but rather if I want to do all three things what skills will overlap and what I should train first to benefit all activities. I do understand that setting priorities is purely my decision, but I still appreciate your responses. So far it seems social, ship, and core skills would be a good way to go. That way I will be able to run missions and do combat sites during exploration as well. I am planning to get social skills to lvl4 then switch to core skills leaving lvl5 for a better time. |

I use:
skills that affect all ships (core skills) > skills that affect some ships (support skills) > skill that affect one ship (specialization)
