While I realise that there isn't really a need for a joystick in the game. I think that there could atleast be the option of using manual ship direction. though I don't really see where it would give an advantage to players, it would be nice to have.

I think if guns were able to fire even though there's no target, but only forward firing, there would be a use for a joystick. The real problem is that the way the interface is designed, there's no real use for a one unless you just want to fly round and round a roid belt all day. Probably good for patrolling a particular path when defending a mining op but not much else.

Well that is kind of the issue, I can't tell you the number of times I am traveling at 1.5km/s heading from one side of space to the other (mainly in combat or aproaching a stargete) and the flight AI rams me into a concord billboard or the like.

As my third time bashing CCP today I am sure you could consider it a rant. But allowing direct control of a ship CCP would argue would give to much control to bots and thereby aid cheaters.
Besides there dumb view of only caring about cheaters which is the only reason they ever give me for why they do anything. I think it would be nice to have any kind of manual control of ship heading whatsoever besides the laim system where you try to find a bit of empty space to click on several times before your ship will actualy start to do something about it. Sometimes you just want to be able to move your ship a little bit to get a better position for mining or whatever. Even just allowing the use of keyboard buttons would realy help.
Manualy aiming guns would kind of change the game to much. This would realy give huge unfair advantage to bots and allow people to by pass the skill system for things like targeting. I just dont think it would be that great an idea.

"only caring about cheaters which is the only reason they ever give me for why they do anything"
This is true of any online game that finds itself being mined for resources for resale outside of the game. The focus of the game designers shifts to defense against predators. Ordinary players find themselves increasingly ignored, deprived, strapped for resources, and eventually not deriving enough satisfaction from the game to continue.
EVE is by definition an online economy, there are no silver bullets that will correct the situation.
I think in the future we will see online games without exploitable economies from the outset, but they will work quite differently from the current generation of online games.
