if u have a pos that is being atacked by a couple of dreads and support would u defend it with if u have dreads and some support available?
dreads+fitting are probitly more expensive as the pos itselve. and u will probitly loose some of em or all of em...
the problem is that the pos is probitly cheaper then the dreadnoughts.
and outpost is totaly not worth to defend if a hostile fleet with capital ships comes in and atacks it u can just retake it when the enemy's are sleeping/gone

i disagree, although capital ships are much, much more expensive. Several battleships concentrating fire can down it incedibly quickly.

hardly, 5 Dreads vs 1 pos and 20 bs, my bet is on the 20 bs, esp if they get in close ,the dreads are screwed

Dreads are for attacking POS not for defending them. For defending POS, a medium/large sized BS fleet is quite sufficient.

Recall RA losing 11 dreads while attacking a pos?
Yes, it's easy and doable.
If the dreads attacking you have a big backup fleet though, you need a huge fleet to take it on. If not, you lost your pos. Who cares. If you wanna defend it using cap ships. Try that.
Whatever you whine about - also like that titan thread which is going now - the stuff will be used regardless of it's values. It's not always about what's profitable and what's worth more.

there's no way i can gather a fleet of 20 bs's in a day i would need weeks before of planing in this north alliance crap.
a fleet of badger still seems to be the best option and haul it to safe and log

what i find amusing is that everybody has jumped on the argument that hey 20 BS can take out that 1 Dreadnought attacking your POS.
However how many instances have there been of just 1 dread attacking by itself without its own massive support fleet :) "We worship Strength because it is through strength that all other values are made possible" |

That's not what it's about. If you take out one dread, that's over 2-3bil they lose. That's more damage than they can do destroying your POS AND all the battleships put together. They'll think twice about attacking one of your POS again.

A dread is stationary when it's in siege mode.

Not to mention that hey-20 BShip can take out a dread. After that you move to the NEXT dread and kill that one, too.
Unless they've got a lot of Moroses, then it's fully possible for a 20 man BShip gang to kill a 20 Dread gang. Well... unless they've got a few Phoenixes, too. Phoenixes can actually hit and do damage to BShips when in siege mode.

pos need to be able to focus fire. you can pack them full of ******* powerful guns but unless you decide to risk modifying your standings to make it attack one ship, those guns will just fire willy nilly at anything hostile.

Defending a PoS with dreads is like defending a castle with a battering ram. Remember the dreads aren't going anywhere if they're in siege mode, If it's just two dreads attacking, they're done for- the Big problem comes in from their escorts. ---

Insuring a dread costs more than the whole POS with fittings so that point is kinda moot.
In a regular fleet engagement, the one with more fire/manpower has the apparent advantage (simplified, of course, since tactics, skill levels, equipments and other factors count aswell).
The same applies to a POS siege, as it should, but the defender has some advantages: POS defenses which act without the need for manual control and the advantage at choosing terms of the engagement. Dreads are anti-POS ships and whilst in siege mode are put in a considerable risk, unable to flee if defenders wish to engage. And if defenders are superior, the dreads have little hope.
They are also (varyingly) inefficient against ships and as such do not push the scale in the attacker's favor considerably. Perhaps they should - afterall dreads represent a great deal of specialization and investment and for one they should definitely be efficient at their dedicated role - taking down large and mostly stationary targets.
So, a few hundred mil for a POS that will withstand a tremendous amount of firepower and can defend itself unmanned and requires either a great number of enemies or a few dreadnoughts that need to place themselves in great risk to take it down certainly deserves to be destroyed if a sufficient defensive fleet cannot be mustered.
In short: defenders have several advantages; an undefended POS does not deserve to survive, especially when much time and commitment is needed even to take down an unmanned tower, and for the investment put into the tower the effort is reasonable.
Edit:

But does a dread have equally much hitpoints? Does a dread cost as little? How long will it take to train for a dread, compared to Anchoring III (lol)?

i know that. i was just contesting that the guy i was quoting seemed to be implying that dreads were as stationary as POSes. they aren't

Any operation with Dreads should involve several hundred BS choking off local as well.
I don't like it but thats the direction the game is going, more conflict, less figthing, less you can do about it.

If you have the numbers and firepower, you can bring the POS down with regular ships anyway, but Dreads are a great tool because they make it possible to take down towers with less people (one pilot does the damage of up to 10 and can tank the tower's output aswell). The cost for the hardware is about the same (if not more for dreads actually), not to mention that skill specialization takes anywhere from several months to a year (if starting from scratch).
In other words, smaller parties with enough resources (but not pilots) can be successfull in siege warfare.
Take for example a normal corporation war of relatively small corps, the size of 10-30. If they took a BS fleet to take down the enemy's towers they would likely sustain heavy losses but now they have the opportunity to use a more powerful tool, if they can afford it.

If your POS is under attack, you should have drive-bies for it in advance anyway, and having the attacking fleet taking fire from the POS, you warp your fleet in at sniping-range and pop one after the other of the escort. Warp out, and repeat.
If they dont have their fleet at the POS at all, its even easier for you, remember you have the POS-guns on your side when fighting outnumbered.

Reading all the posts about attacking posses with dreads and about what battleships can or will do to them, one question comes to mind:
Why won't the attackers bring carriers to support their dreads? In my estimate, though I cannot yet fly a carrier, fighters should be real nasty on bs. And the carriers should provide some useful possibilities for their gang members in addition, like shield transfer, dockings for friglets, and gang boni.
And comparing isk values between capships and posses is not really valid, when u loose your pos you also loose in the worst case your claim on sovereignty, which is worth a bit more than the iskies for the installations.
Thats my opinion, although i cannot yet fly capships. |
