After playing the game for nearly 2 months and reading EVE related material on various sites and forums, I have noticed that a lot of veteran players simply take for granted the necessity of having alternate accounts.
For example the guy that recently posted a guide to site running in lowsec assumes right off that you've got an alt trained for scanning and interceptors, and perhaps another for hauling. Almost every comment by older players seems to assume the use of specialized alts to support whatever you're doing on your main. Alts for logi, scanning, scouting, hauling etc.; even playing multiple accounts at once on multiple monitors.
Do you have to devote such a level of resources to this game to be successful? If not, why do so many "elite" players seem to expect this level of investment to be the norm?
I'm seriously considering buying another plex for faster training on my current character; or should I just go ahead and buy another account? I only have one pc and the thought of managing all this seems daunting. |

It's not that having multiple accounts is mandatory or anything. But having at least one alt makes everything far, far easier.
Let me make a really broad example with PVE. One player in one ship doing 1000 DPS will take 60 seconds to kill a battleship NPC. 2 characters in 2 ships doing 1000 DPS will kill it in around 20 seconds. This is because the NPCs do repair themselves a bit in battle. So the second account more than doubles your effectiveness.
And for pvp, having a throwaway alt scout to jump through that lowsec gate before your 2B strategic cruiser can save you several PLEX worth of pain.
Do you dream of owning a capital ship someday? Having your own cyno character makes it possible to own one without being totally reliant on your corpmates.
So much of this game is made infinitely easier, and in some cases possible, by having just one alt account. That's why it is such a common practice. |

You NEVER need alts, but it can make things a lot easier to do.
Other option, actually play with other people, so instead of an alt, another person is helping you.

I don't think extra accounts are required to play EVE. All my other accounts are not essential, but are helpful.
For me it went: * Account 1: 2009-02-24 * Account 2: 2009-04-04 Sure would be nice to have someone haul my ore. * Account 3: 2009-08-06 I sure could use a hisec POS janitor when I'm away living in w-space. * Account 4: 2010-03-23 I can earn more with a second miner. * Account 5: 2011-05-24 I want to train alts for my other accounts.
All my accounts were created before multi-character training on the same account existed.
Nearly all of them have been assigned additional roles as needed. Example: Account 4 grew to be additional DPS, HIC pilot, Logistics pilot, hauler, researcher, manufacturer, PI, probe specialist, etc.
They are all paid accounts. I consider it my entertainment budget. This way I don't have to worry about PLEX, I can just play EVE and have fun. |

Just to make this clear. You can't train your current character faster. You can train two characters on the same account simultaneously with a PLEX.
I wouldn't suggest you start a second account (or a second character) just because other people do it. Do it only when you have a specific purpose for the new character. Also, make sure you understand whether an alt on the same account or on a separate one would be better suited for the goal you have in mind. |
