Edited by: Vanakov Mek''lanavar on 10/04/2006 08:55:11 Hello everyone,
I know most people disable sound due to cpu/lag issues, but has anyone found a soundcard which mitigates the problem?
With creative's new range of X-Fi sound cards I was hoping some of the 3D sound and positioning effects are actually ofloaded onto the sound card, Can anyone confirm or deny?
It's about now I wish the Aureal cards had taken off.

Edited by: Grez on 10/04/2006 14:45:48 I have a X-Fi, and it's actually damn nice. I've noticed the sound quality in EVE has upped a few notches... Especially the beams. Instead of an ear-peircing beam sound, it's rather ... electrical? I can't explain it, it's just a lot nicer to listen too than on my Audigy 2.
Go for the X-Fi. Especially since it has EAX 5 support :p.
No sounds are rendered through the soundcard with EVE atall. Hence why, when you disable the sound, the FPS goes up. It's just the way EVE works.

Edited by: Abimelech on 14/04/2006 19:05:36 If there is no Hardware Audio support in Eve, why would the quality/features of the soundcard matter? Also, without Hardware Audio support, how are the EAX protocols sent to the audio card, if at all?
I thought about buying a new sound card also, but because my sound constantly POPS and CR@CK$ the entire time I'm playing. Very loud and annoying. I have an on-board C-Media Audio Device on my Asus P4B533.
A colleague with whom I play has the Plantronics A500 USB Headset (Built-in Audio Device) and his sound is perfect. So, I am contemplating buying those.
Anyone else getting these "pops" and "cr@ck$"?
Edit: Heh, the word c-r-a-c-k got filtered.

I have got a X-Fi and I still get pops and cr@cks here and there. It doesn't happen all the time but only at the end of certain sound files. Going to try my head phones later on and see if it isn't my Klipschs' causing it. I really can't recommend the X-Fi enough though it truly is a nice sound card. ---- |

I was using the sound card built into my computer at firsdt but then i founf my old SB Live! 5.1. The sound is definitely better on the Live than the mobo supplied sound chipset.
Now all we need is for CCP to change the code so the sound is offloaded to the sound card, allowing us more FPS

Hi Got the same problems with a XFI Platinum on a Nforce 3 250 GB Mainboard and Windows XP x64 Pro. The only way to play it without pops and cr@cks is to reboot the computer and then start EVE directly and no other programm which uses the sound interface. With a normal Realtek ALC 850 Onboardchip i dont get those problems. The same happens with Max Payne 2. I called creative support, but it looked like the support man didnt have an idea what i was talking about.
Im just hoping that the next driver patch will solve that. So at the moment i can't recommand a xFi for EVE. I played it with an Soundblaster Live, Terratec Aureon Fun and a Realtek ALC 850 CHip and had no problems.

I use a Sound Blaster Audigy 2 and it is flawless. I run with the highest quality I can on everything and it just chugs along with no effort and sounds great. I am also using the T7700 Inspire speaker system by Creative in 7.1 mode so I can hear everything in surround sound. Very Sweet.
As a note, if you are getting popping noises or your system is flakey on the sound, you might be running into a DMA or interrupt etc. issue where your sound card is catching "noise" from other devices. The popping is especially indicative of this. Try shifting some devices around (physically moving to other slots and addresses etc) to see if this stops it. Be careful though, you will want to make a note of what you change in case the problem doesn't get better but gets worse and you need to go back to the original settings.

I would go for something NOT made by Creative Labs.
I have an Audigy 2, and while it works well enough for the most part, if I try to run two instances and forget to disable sound, the machine will blue-screen with a crash in the audigy driver.
I've tried both older and bleeding-edge drivers, and it boils down to a problem with multi-threading that Creative hasn't fixed, and shows no indication that they ever will fix it.
<=----=> Vila Restal: I'm entitled to my opinion. Kerr Avon: It is your assumption that we are entitled to it as well that is irritating.

Creative cards are definetely not recommeneded for EVE. Especially the audigy 2, which will likely cause EVE to crash on a regular basis.

X-Fi is completely usless. I have one in front of me and I'm tempeted to smash it to tiny pieces with the crappy logitech bluetooth keyboard that is also new.
Aviod at any cost if using a nforce mb and and xp x64. It just doesn't work.

I was trying to get my FPS up by trying different sound cards. C-Media is good but it Pops and *****s (only in eve, poor positional audio in Battlefield 2 also)). Built in sound AC97 was ok a couple of FPS faster hard to tell. I then reverted to my SB 5.1 Platinum. The drivers are a pain in the ass to install but once setup(after 10 reboots) it was the best for sound quality and the FPS was about the same. I am hoping to get an X-Fi some time.......any donations welcome
PS. I guess eve doesnt like the C-Media chipset.

Don't be fooled, he works for Creative! Why else would anyone in their right mind suggest using one of their cards? :P

if mobo has realtek chipset, using the realtek acl850 drivers instead of the nforce4 drivers resolves the popping, but you'll have sound stuttering in f.e.a.r. , hl2, farcry etc. realtek drivers are ****... but apparently are better for eve.
Xruin,
nice specs.. to bad they have ****all to do with this thread. im sure theres an applicable thread where you can boast your specs.

Same here. I don't bother with expensive, questionable soundcards and the associated desk-gobbling speaker systems and cabling nightmares.
I just put on a nice, comfortable Plantronics DSP-500 headset, and enjoy perfect sound with perfect positional fidelity. Not to mention perfect voice delivery using Teamspeak.
