Is it against the rules, to take a Retreiver into a 0.6 Mining Belt, launch 5 drones, and use a Civilian miner to sit AFK for a very very long time, causing rats to spawn and have your drones auto-farm for you? |

For an official response file a petition and ask a GM.
I can't say if its allowed or not but I can say it would be completely pointless and would most likely result in all your drones being killed followed by your ship.
That's if you don't get yourself ganked first. |

No, it's not against the rules to AFK with your drones out. It's against the rules to use a macro-program to initiate actions while you are AFK. |

Well its in high sec, relatively abandonned area. Active mining my drones flog most things within 5-6 seconds, and i take no more than 5-10% Shield damage. Only 2 or 3 rats spawn at a time. and its only for when i go out, nap or watch movies. |

Being AFK is legit. Using automated macro commands is against the rules.
Only issue I see isnt so much the rats, though switching aggro mechanics might be an issue in the very long run. Its fellow players that might interupt your farming.
And why would you want to farm belt rats in highsec... and even more in a retriever.

Well good luck to you. Dont think you thought about retrievers being primal gank food. You can do this in a combat ship too and actually survive
Basically, mine using a mining ship, rat using a ratting ship.
But if you stick with highsec. Run missions over belt ratting, it pays a lot better then 0.6 rats (which I estimate on 1 -1.5 mil / hour tops). Personal channel: Crazy Dutch Guy

Doesn't seem very profitable. You'd probably be better off doing actual mining, and just have shorter intervals of AFKing. Plus, being AFK in a Retriever in 0.6 you would be a prime gank candidate. |

There was a highsec plex that had infinitely respawning NPC's, and someone setup farming it with permatanking afk domi's. That was deemed an exploit, but cant be asked to lookup the story and details at this time.
Truth be told, it is a non-issue in highsec belts, as the isk you earn on highsec belt npcs very, very, very small. I doubt you'd make 10m isk a day leaving your ship vulnerable to attack the entire time.
If you choose to pursue this, I would highly recommend using a ship tankier than a retriever, perhaps a vexor or myrm or domi (i.e. something that also gets a drone HP and damage penalty. |

AFK retriever in a belt in hisec is going to have a very short life span...
First you will get bumped out of mining range then once it has been ascertained that you are indeed AFK, in come the thrashers/catalysts to pop your retriever (and pod as well depending on who finds you).
In every way I can imagine, this is a bad idea. I hope you go through with it, however, as it is always nice to hear about AFK miners being ganked! |

1 you cannot fit a civillian miner on a retreiver.you need a turret slot to do that. Retrievers can only fit strip miners. 2 mining has no effect on rat spawn rates. 3 a rock in hisec mines out in under 10 mins with an unskilled miner, 3 mins skilled. That's the longest you can afk mine. 4 if you want to farm asteroid rats, fly from belt to belt in a cruiser, not a retreiver.

Ooh...lol, it's the WH guy. Didn't even see that.
So, it does look like he is just wanting WH space for the ISKies and not for the community or common goals or PvP. Good luck with that, or being AFK in WH space if you ever come into it.
Again, if you want to farm belt rats (I don't see why you would farm belt rats in high-sec for an income of less then 1mil / hour), pick a ratting ship. Personal channel: Crazy Dutch Guy

Why do people seem to assume this is my sole source of income, the question was, while i am AFK (that means not at keyboard, elsewhere in RL, sleeping etc)
This was just a method to make some isk. It'd net me about 1.6mil for 8 hours. 1.6mil for going to bed, i dont see how that makes me someone who is funding purely off sleeping. |

Retrievers are paper-thin: I have seen many lost in hi sec belts simply because their drones took too long to respond to NPC rats. Even if the rats don't blow up your retriever, it's likely that wandering gankers will.
If you're interested in making ISK, check out the Making ISK guide. AFK farming rats in a hi sec belt is possibly the most counter-productive suggestion I've heard for quite some time (short of simply giving your money away). Day 0 advice for new players: Day 0 Advice for New Players |

Nice attitude there Mr. AFK...
Well more power to you, however don't be surprised when your big AFK plans turn out to decrease your wallet instead of increase...
EVE is very much a non-AFK game, and anything which you may think will succeed in an AFK manner has already been found and is actively punished by various members of the population. To some people there is nothing better than finding someone who is AFK and setting up a big surprise for when they get back. So be prepared to meet them first hand. |

If you read my initial question, and how every response you have given so far is, i don't understand why you bother. "Pick a ratting ship for ratting" "Do missions" "If you want isk, you must only want isk from every aspect of the game including corps/other players"
1. The idea was that mining would spawn the rats, and the retreiver has a large hold so the civ miner can run longer, (yes i have been corrected by someone who gave good advice) 2. The question specifically pointed out - While AFK or Sleeping. Running missions is the dumbest response anyone could conjure. 3. Isk is a common goal of 95% of the EVE Community, if i don't make it, i can't get anywhere, why would you assume this is my only goal? If i wanted a game where all i did was hoard currency, i wouldn't choose EVE where it can be legally bought with IRL Wallet.

AFK mining in a retriever is not the same thing. Did you even read the OP? He was not thinking about mining, mining was just a mean for getting rats to spawn, he even said he'd use a civilian miner to make sure not to pop the asteroid/run out of carge space. It's pretty much the same thing as those DED complexes, except more stupidly executed with almost worthless rats.
And in any case, the problem is "generating income in an automated fashion while sleeping". CCP was clear that you will not get banned for being AFK to go to the toilet, eat something or being semi-AFK while doing something else on or around the computer. But generating income while sleeping or being out of the house is not ok, whatever the means. |

On 2.
No not really, EVE isn't an AFK farming game. Go ahead, play it AFK, you will lose more ISK then you gain.
On 3.
No. For 99% of EVE, having fun is the goal. Not ISK, that is used to achieve the thing that gives them fun.

It's not against the rules afaik. But expect to lose your ship sooner or later. Suicide Gankers will 100% gank you if they see you AFK. Why would you rat in 0.5-0.6 systems anyway? And also in a mining ship? It's like drawing a huge red bullseye on your back.
Edit: Besides, telling you are going to be AFK on forums is usually a bad idea. People will run Locator Agents to find you, gank you, collect tears from you, and mock you around. Plus, with a civilian miner on a mining barge/exhumer would make a very embarrasing kill mail. Your loss will be exposed in such convos as a fail fit and noobish behaviour. http://www.minerbumping.com/p/the-code.html |
