Can someone explain to me why so many people seem obsessed with becoming a belt pirate these days? The minute someone gets bored with any aspect of the game, first thing they do is join the flavour of the month pirate corp.
Empire belts are filled with players aged 3 months or less. Battleships and other ransomable ships are very rare as these are usually found doing missions in stead of belt hunting NPCs. That leaves you with noobs in (at best) Battlecruisers. Its not even worth get flagged for 15 minutes in most cases as the loot they drop is poor and they rarely pay ransoms.
In most cases, they don't even fire back or do anything but 'just sit there'. Even the most seasoned ganker gets bored of that after a while. I spend 2 years in UO killing miners (The pickhammer time, not the striplaser type) and don't see the thrill of doing the same in EVE. You'll get more opposition from fighting NPCs.
Gate ganking I can understand. People actually carry goods worth looting near gates. Industrials filled with valuebles, lone Freighters. These you won't find in belts. If you blockade a system long enough, the pitchfork mobs start to arrive. And then you've got fun fights on your hands.
0.0 piracy I understand. NPC'ers in 0.0 actually use modules worth looting. Nothing better than finding that lone officer-tank raven pilot and putting those items on escrow the following day. And its easier to kill around 0.0 gates, too.

I'd like to understand where your expert knowledge of how piracy works stems from.

while its true that often the loot is crap, ive pulled faction stuff off nubs in low sec before, who probably didnt even know its value
its also quite funny

i dont think everyone is a "pirate" just because they go and force someone in to pvp match.
I for one and my corp make our money by hunting npc rats when were done with that we might go out in frigs and look for someone in a belt. does this make us pirates? no i dont think so, we dont make our money off of other people which is what a pirate does.

you would prolly be suprised to see what u can find off belt npc'ers
not only that but u do find cruiser ninja minners in emp belts, ive even ran across tah ocassional minning barge adn boy are they quick to pay ransom
then theres also the other emp pirates who are typically a good/fun fight and can drop great loot
so uh i guess if u think it sounds boring or lame dont do it and leave more prey for us

Why?
Because piracy is fun.
In empire belts you can find pretty much all sorts of people in all sorts of ships (including other pirates). Sure there aren't too many organized PVP gangs hanging out in belts... but that's fine with me considering I'm usually on my own...
Sometimes newbies get killed... but if you want to make an omelette...
In short: Cry me a river, build a bridge, and get over it.

Because its fun? Because 0.0 is too many jumps away? Because nothing is better than a frigate holding up a newb in a Battleship/Battlecruiser? Because there are FAR too many lowskilled Caracal pilots that cant break a frigate tank with heavy missiles? Because im ebil? Because its fun to taunt the local Bleak Lands cops and lead then on hour+ goose chases after your frigate?
Because.. I can?

kill enough noobs in the belts, the area pirate hunters will come with their well fitted BS's, etc.
That's when you cash in.....
In regards to posting with "main"....um, well, ermmm. I cannot decide who my main is. But I've been posting here for a relatively longish time. Unless it's patently trollaltflamebait, then cut it some slack?

A friend told me he was killing a faction spawn every few days in a 0.3. I visited him and he loaded up EVE. We scanned the belts. Two faction spawns. OK, one ran away, but still. You don't get those kinds of drops in Level 3s. Ever.

Blame sentry guns. If we get the skills and things done to tank them properly, we might leave the belts alone once in a while .

Bitter much?
Anyways. I have not done a whole load of missions in my time here but I can tell you one thing for sure: No faction battleship, no Station Ultimo, no freekin' commander rat is ever gonna smack you in local.
Oh, and NPC usually don't pack high-slots full of T2 strip miners and low-slots full of local cargo expanders.
Ahh, the sweet, sweet Jackpot...

Belt piracy isn't easy :/
Half the time people just hide at POS before you even find em on scanner.

The act of finding them and pouncing on them unaware may be time-consuming, but there's nothing difficult about scrambling some noob miner or industrial and blowing it up.

What about ratting people? Plenty of those around and they can pose a threat for a pirate. No matter what you want to believe.

O.o You often find rich noobs in Battle ships in empire belts. on a good day back when i was doing this you could make 60-90m in ransoms (2-3 apocs or whaever). Yeah i know there's better ways to earn the ISK, but hell, lets just face it, this is the more fun way :>

My old tactic was to join the corp and then find out what they had. Then when they were mining or missioning, I pull out the scrambler and yell YARRR. You get good randsoms since you are PICKING your targets, of which you know if they have implants or not. -- The Scammers Cookbook |

1. Noob 'anti-pirates' turn up and try to fight you. You get to own them too. Many ships blow up and fun ensues.
2. Gate camping is boring as hell. Rare to get any decent loot. Roid belts have a steady supply of Modulated Stripminer 2s that sell for like 15m+ each. Even the t1 ones sell for 2 or 3 mill.
3. Agent runners are annoying to catch. By the time you have used enough scan probes to narrow them down they have finished their mission. May as well hunt the belts while wiaitng for scan results.

Pretty much... not like anyone stupid enough to be in a belt in empire is gonna fight back

Because in 0.0 unless you're very skilled and very careful you have very high chances to get blown up. On your way in, way out or just ganked by the corpmates/friends of who you just killed. Lots of good pvpers roam around 0.0 just dying for a fight so it's a very competitive ground. So most pirates just prefer to kill clueless miners/npcers in empire...easy ISK. Ofc you may get killed in empire too but the chances are usually much lower. ROA Recruitment Mercs 4tw :) |
