You know what the funny thing is... I figured that mining would be an easy profession to skill up. I mean, the "obvious" mining skills don't take up a long skill. Yet, I'm 10 million skill points in and still have so much more to go. Granted, alot of those skill points are in the industrial sector, but I still have mining upgrades and exhumers to go, not to mention the navigation skills. I got the fitting skills up alrady, now I also need to work on my cap skills. Also my shield skills so I can tank my exhumer against some of the rats.
One good way to go about it is to open up the market, look at a covetor, and get all the required skills for it. That's a good start.
Also, I just get what I feel I could most use at the moment. Is warping taking too long... I get warp drive navigation so I don't have to stop mid warp. Is turning taking too long (always will but you can help it some) then you need evasive maneuvering and spaceship command. Just get the basic mining skills down and then get the rest of them.
Good luck.

Don't waste time with barges unless you don't mind being unable to mine outside of High Sec for a l-o-n-g time - and even then you will have to have an escort. Go straight for a Battleship. Once you get your BS and the basic skills you can fill out the rest however you like, while you are making ISK.
Skills you need: Ship skills (Cruiser IV, Battleship I, etc) Mining IV (for Miner II lasers) Science III Astrogeology Mining Drones / Drones IV

I disagree. It depends on each person's circumstances. I have no problem mining in a retreiver (almost to covetor) in 0.2-0.1 space for extended periods of time with someone occasionally comming in to clear out rats. Its not a kick-back and read a book deal but its not difficult either; but like I said, it depends on what your circumstances are.

I would have to disagree with that. 0.0 corps are almost always looking for miners to help build up their industry divisions, and if you manage to take 5 minutes out of your time in recruitment channel im sure that you can find one to help you out. One session of crokite mining can easily pay for several retrievers, so losing one is never something that i've dwelled on. To each their own though, im sure scordite pays off........ eventually.... =P
