It has gotten to the point where I am only running xp for EVE and some FPS games. Sad, eh? Anyway, I'm dual booting now with linux. I'm running Fedora Core 5 and everything is running fine and dandy. But it seems to meh of an OS... too touchy feely or something. Could anybody tell me about Ubuntu and their expirience with it? Is it newb friendly? Easy to use? etc..
Thanks much.

Ubuntu is the user friendly linux.
it looks lovely, and is similar enough to windows to switch over easily. It's not quite as hardcore as some of the other distros, losing minor funtionality (gentoo's emerge command is superb) and taking a teeny weeny performance hit compared to some of the more utilitarian flavours.
But to be honest, if you're not going to hit the console it's almost the perfect nix distro. It ****s all over SuSE and the 'big' distros for usability and ergonomics, and perhaps most importantly, I use it. its ace.

Alright, question time!
So I have ubuntu up and running but the resolution is 1024x768. This does not go well with my LCD display (the LCD likes 1280x1024). However, there are no settings to change the to 1280x1024. I've edited xorg.conf in /etc/X11 and added 1280x1024 as an option and then rebooted and nothing changed.
I also re-ran the mouse/keyboard/display wizard thing and managed to royally screw X. I got it back tho.. so I'm back to square one.
Help?

At risk of being, uh, "Wrangled", post the relevant bits of your xorg.conf please :) |

most of the settings are done when in su, except the problem with ubuntu it doesnt use the standard su command. i believe the website has a section on it on how to set up your super user password so you can login and change stuff. i cant remember what it is off the top of my head.
also ubtuntu is the only linux distro that uses ShipIt, a completely free service where you stick your adress in and the ship you the amount of ubtuntu CDs of you choice. professinally pressed and in covers. the minimum package is 3 CDs, one for 32-bit, one for 64-bit and one for mac platforms, you can order up to 140 of each for free or something.
