I'm going to agree with you, and I'm going to force you to watch the Firefly TV series...
I'm not sure as to when movies get released elsewhere, but Serenity was released in the States close to a year ago. --- --- --- ---

Firefly was a great series, however too much concept and story was ripped from Cowboy Bebop and Outlaw Star. The creator should at least give them a little credit, but it is blatantly obvious that he was stealing plot points. ------------------

In an interview somewhere, Whedon mentioned that he was definately gonna tell Booke's story, if he couldn't do it via some form of media, said he'd release something online. Not seen anything yet.
There's hundreds of theories about who exactly he was, my money's on the General in charge of the battle for serenity valley.
Not entirely sure he was an operative - operatives dont have identities/aren't known about - but when he was injured those alliance officers looking at his ident card sure as hell knew who he was..
Although, one of my favorite theories i've read was that he IS the operative from the film, just gone back in time to help everyone. (yes, so he kills himself!)
But I guess its something that we'll just have to wait and see about.
Rumors of my clones death are greatly exaggerated. But I am still INACTIVE

I'll have to agree with everyone else, that serenity is an awseome movie, and a great compliment to the 'firefly' series. (must see!!)
in response to the "ripped from 'cowboy bebop' and 'outlaw star"
having watched ALL 3 of these series, I'd have to say that beyond the 'out to do a job, with the rest of the galaxy against us' theme, I fail to see the 'obvious plot points'
while I guess that the lead characters in these series (malcom reynolds, spike speigal and gene starwind) have a hilariously uncanny ability to get their respective crews "in the wrong place at the wrong time"
mal's quite obviously the brains of the operation, it's usually jet black, or jim hawking (respectively) that hatch the plans in the other series, since spike and gene are a touch reckless...
in that way, there probably more likened to that of jayne cobb (hand him the heaviest stick and stand well back - Inara, ep: shindig)
zoe: beyond being the chick that kicks ass... NO other connection I can find between Faye Valentine and Aisha Clanclan...
but for any anime lovers out there who haven't seen "outlaw star" or "cowboy bebop" they should be on the top of your list.
and yes Kaylee -Jewel Stait(the mechanic) is just STUNNING.
my feelings on booke: I get the feeling that he was one of the CO's at the battle for serenity valley, and the brutality of the fight made him question whether, though he was on the winning side, he was on the WRONG side, thus he abandons his position and goes on a quest to redeem his sins, and find his faith.
I'm also getting the feeling that the film "serenity" is joss whedon showing us HOW the story COULD go, but I get the feeling we'll be seeing a film on an alternate storyline (this happens with some anime series, they show you how things COULD have gone). thus booke and wash might be alive and well for the next film, given the event may never have taken place...
OR!
in connection to what River says at the end of the film, that we might see someone from booke's past in the next film, perhaps fellow soldiers/officers who had the same feelings at the battle, and form a rebel group (or join an existing one) and tell us booke's story... it's no secret that whedon LOVES the works of george lucas... but I'd imagine if this happened we'd see a different slant on the rebels fighting the "evil empire"
I could go on all night... but I better not :P

Whoa, I think you need a new definition for "new".
And yes, by all means, WATCH FIREFLY!
Originally by: nails Firefly was a great series, however too much concept and story was ripped from Cowboy Bebop and Outlaw Star. The creator should at least give them a little credit, but it is blatantly obvious that he was stealing plot points.
Yes, because absolutely EVERYTHING is really just anime
Originally by: Ominus Decre Is it me or is that mechanic a little hotty!!! I'd give her a full lube job and some tlc.
Haha, I thought I was the only one who thought that! I thought everybody else just loved Inara, the Companion.
Originally by: Hakera yeah great series but cant believe they got rid of wash & book (though I suppose someone has to die) I was all for series 2 being reserected and we find out that Book is an ex-parliament operative myself
Yeah, I was ****ed about Wash getting killed, I always have a special place in my heart for pilots. Book, meh, he was expendable...I figured they could have killed off Zoe, or maybe Simon...hell, anybody as long as Jayne and Kaylee live!
Originally by: DedGuy Although, one of my favorite theories i've read was that he IS the operative from the film, just gone back in time to help everyone. (yes, so he kills himself!)
Err, so why does he have a completely different voice/accent? -------- Tom Thumb > for a nut case you rawk [04:21:15] Mebrithiel Ju'wien > Nik's bio 4tw btw [07:38:53] Graelyn > Nikolai for Dev 108!

I never saw the series but hated the movie.
Those crazy guys who cut themselves where cool but it was spoiled for me when they got their asses kicked by a 10 year old girl. Her fightin glooked really poor like she was doing baton practice and not putting any effort into it.

Edited by: F''nog on 13/04/2006 00:38:31 Yes, the mechanic is hot. And she's got the second best line in the movie, after the opening/closing one.
PS - You have a fairly liberal view of what "new" means, but we've all accepted and love a certain 6-part trilogy, so who are we to argue?

Thats cos you dont know who she is or how her character develops.
Anyways I reckon book will be in it in flashback sequences, if it gets made, else there will be comics or a book. mmmmMm books...

the writer should revive the series with or without fox's permission. if fox copyright goons come by, just do like Jayne and let them have some Grenades....

Mistake number 1. You'd know who she was/is if you'd seen it, AND they explain it breifly at the beginning of the movie and throughout the movie as well (opening scene, bar scene)
Originally by: Kyozoku Those crazy guys who cut themselves where cool but it was spoiled for me when they got their asses kicked by a 10 year old girl. Her fightin glooked really poor like she was doing baton practice and not putting any effort into it.
Reavers were also explained in the movie and the series. As well, she's got telepathy, so she can predict what is about to happen and can poeticaly and fluently make her moves accordingly. Even still, one the most useful tactics in martial arts... is baton twirling (it helps with ANY handheld weapon that doesn't go BANG!).
As for Firefly/Serenity being a Cowboy Bebop rip-off... That would be like telling me that simply because the sci-fi movie had strange looking aliens in it that it was a Star Wars rip-off.
1) Cowboy Bebop (CB) is about bounty hunters, one is ex-mafia and one is ex-police.
Firefly/Serenity (FF) is about ex-military that lost a civil war and now resort to thieving (as well as legal tactics) in order to keep themselves fed.
2) CB stars 2 guys, a chick, a little kid, and a dog
FF stars 4 guys and 3 chicks... and some cows =P
They only really have one thing in common, both movies have an underlying theme of "trying to survive." The main themes of each are completely different. Far be-it for me to interpret the themes for you though. It's just plain to see the differences. --- --- --- ---

I thought it was a great film but felt abit let down from the hype. I was expecting to see River kick alot more arse than she did, 2 scenes were she fought wasnt enough another 2 fights and id give it 10/10. Also how did the doctor ignore that engineer for so long ??? he must be more psycho than River
