-snip-
So where will you take us in this new frontier CCP is hinting at? A land of opportunity for small business, smugglers, artisans and petty thieves? Or just another field to be conquered and divided by Alexander and Hannibal?
Okay, couple ways to come at this so bear with me if I seem to veer off track.
I like to represent the 'little guy' (or gal) but that does not mean that I object to a huge well run organization from having advantages due to BEING large and well run. Their accomplishment of organization in a game of paranoia and distrust should have its benefits. This applies to Goons, BNI, any big organization hi/low/null/wh.
but
I do want to see ways for an individual to make a difference. I don't want every problem to be solved by N+1 where N is the number of ships the other guys bring. I LIKE bombers where a small organized group can scare the hell out of a large fleet. I like deployables where a single guy can refit deep in enemy territory.
But
Look at the Fanfest images from the new frontier . . . it shows a gate being built. Others have commented on that but the takeaway I had was 'damn, gonna need a lot of materials/time/manpower' I just hope there are ways to sneak in the backdoor. Seriously, I got my covops ready and everything.
It comes back to a common cry for several CSMs now. Farms and Fields. If people have a reason to care about their space then an individual with a match will have a way to make them regret caring. I like that. Hannibal and Alexander (funny coincidence, that second name) may have their day but every army has been dogged and followed by the individuals. I'll be with them, waiting, watching, taking what I can and giving nothing back.
Carebears catch a bad rap for 'not playing the game right'. Man o man do I wish all the miners stopped for a week or two. Watched the supplies dwindle and the prices skyrocket. If a gate needs to be built? Materials have to come from somewhere.
To get back to your question
What I bring to the table is the individuals perspective. I am the one who asks 'what can one guy do here?' I look at it from my experience in PvE and highsec. From doing invention and manufacturing and marketing. I play the casual game partially BECAUSE I spend the rest of the time in the metagame . . . CSM and here in the forums. But when new things are proposed, when my opinion is sought that is one of the filters it goes through. I try to see the big picture but then I step to the sides and look at it in each light that I have and can shine on it. Every idea, every concept that has crossed the CSM's oversight I and others on the council have done this process. Maybe we missed things once or twice but I think we have done a good job, so far.

I can't believe I'm saying this, but I will vote for you this year, you did a great job in this CSM. Even though you are a "carebear", you have a great perspective on sandbox mmo-rpg's mechanics and metagame.
Again, excellent job and good luck with the elections. The Tears Must Flow |

TL;DR Since its wordy and probably unclear, What is your stance on healthcare? lol Seriously, what is your stance on effort being put into a role, and CCP taking the liberty of changing that role and wasting the players effort? More questions/clarification below, if your feeling ambitious.
Here's an issue that I think is appropriate for a CSM vet
For a game to stay interesting, it supposedly has to keep changing.
If I invest time (gametime=money) into a specific role/ship, then what guarantee, or confidence can I have that that role/ship isnt going to change, therefore waste the time it took training into it?
Marauders being an example, Marauders take a lot of time(money) to train into and utilize correctly. If I had trained into a paladin specifically for its web bonus to be used in incursions, then that time(money) was wasted due to "re-balance" since the Paladin lost its web bonus. That change was approved of by the CSM 8.
Since you were apart of that decision and have seen what sway you have when it comes to these things, what are your feelings about that person who lost what he worked for? Do you feel that this is a problem, or just something to live with? What are your feelings on having a say in things that might not be your cup of tea? Ex. assume you dont fly a webbing paladin in incursions, but yet you still have a say in whether the paladin keeps that ability or not.
I think this is an issue for any game that is "balancing" its game play AFTER players have committed to its game play.
Real world example, You love cats, but the pet store is far away and will take a long time to get there. You take the time and walk to the store, and buy a cat. Somehow it turns into a dog. Is the solution to "learn to love dogs" as EVE would imply.
Personal disclaimers: I didnt use the paladins web bonus, I just read about the tears, on the rubicon marauder re-balance. I understand "adapt or die" mentality, dont like it in a game, but understand it. I dont like cats (very important, i know) This attention was brought to you by High Drag podcast. Thank/blame them for it.

Oh, that's easy enough if we could alter the mining mission rewards to 150% ore market value. It'd get the mining gankers to train up scanning and exploration skills, too. Win/win! Or something.

I snipped a few bits out, for brevity sake but I hope I kept the gist of the question(s) intact.
I WANT gameplay to change over time so Eve does not become 'boring same old same old'. But the price we pay for change is a shift in what we can and cannot do. Every change has a ripple effect that shifts our abilities and someone is always calling it a nerf to their lifestyle or career choices. Yes, at times, there is a setback or loss of income but a lot of the skills I trained for Maruaders transfer to other ships, other circumstances. Cannot run Incursions? Try missions. Rebalance of frigates? see how they do for exploring/pvp/some new career I don't even know of.
What would (or do) I say to a person who feels robbed? That they still have the skills they did yesterday. They still have the ships and the assets and Eve is a big game. Reship if your marauder does not work and you still want to fly the style you did before. Repurpose if you want to fly the ship and are willing to change tasks to do so. Adapt. This is not an Eve unique problem. Every game has rebalances, nerf to this weapon, OP another and players shift to refocus. I feel it is an industry accepted standard.
When I can see that someone will be seriously affected by a change I do ask if this has been taken into account. Changes in a ship may alter the market values (By the way, Mynnna who is also running is excellent at foreseeing market ramifications and warning CCP of same) A shift that would make a ships main purpose radically shift we, as the CSM would try to make sure some ship still filled the specific role. I do not just comment on things that I fly or do . . . Eve is too interconnected to try to deal with any change in isolation. This is why it is a good idea to HAVE a council who come from all parts of Eve, so we can see it from a dozen different sides and try to cushion unintended impacts.
I liked your analogy but I disagree with how you see CCP and CSM responding.
Your cat is now sometimes a dog? We encourage you to come back and get the new 'real cat' and sell or keep your current cat/dog. Explore what an unexpected pet is like. Embrace the new chances and Vistas that come with a morphing animal. Oh and buy some banana, tomorrow it may get monkeyish.
On a personal note: I own a cat that is classed as the breed closest to thinking it is a dog. . . the Maine Coon. So maybe I am preconditioned to acceptance of uncertainty.

Biggest Failing of CSM? Not getting CCP completely on board earlier so we could have checked the Fansite and or the TOS/EULA issues earlier on.
CCP's? Pretty much the same as above.
For both of us as a mass? I know you didn't ask this but I did, of myself. The Winter summit minutes. Everything takes too long and promises keep shifting the deadlines further and further back. It was embarrassing for all of us.
What I could have done better? Learn to handle Timezone and daylight savings times. I did miss a couple of meetings and show up just as they ended. Felt stupid as hell.
Thank you, I seldom get to pimp my blog . . . 2 posts are my advice to candidates so far.

Largest issue facing the next CSM9 Hmm, my mind came up with 2 right off of the top so I will give you both. (1) Big changes are coming and they are going to 'drink from the firehose' of information they need to get up to speed on. This is why I am glad there are a few incumbents such as myself running, you are going to need some in the council who are up to speed while the others catch up (2) CSM8 set a new standard for work ethic and response time to CCP queries. I worry about the next council trying to push the goals even further or being compared negatively to us. This is not hubris, it is an honest concern. Expectation management is going to be a needed skill. Compare the current campaigns to those a year ago . . . .not as many people promising communications and hard work because they know what standard they will be held up to.
Ok, maybe there is a little pride in the second one . . . but dammit we earned it!

I agree that it seems to be the "Industry accepted standard" but I think its a bad standard, like fatal side effects to prescription drugs being an accepted standard. Anyway, Ill save my opinion and ideas for a highly flammable F&I thread.

Ashterothi wrote:What is your opinion on two form authentication (security tokens) and account security in general?
Account security has always been a high priority for CCP and anybody who cares about the game. Since we are playing on a single shard our names and characters carry a lot of weight/history and losing them means something more than it would in other games.
But 2-form authentification has its own set of drawbacks. From the 'bother' of having to do an extra step to log in to people who do not possess smart phones and do not wish to pay for a dongle key just so they can play a game they are already subscribed to. Arguments against link Then there is the worry that it still would not be enough as two step is still vulnerable to Man In the Middle attacks. MiTM link
It, for me, comes down to the question of whether the cure is worse than the disease.
There are other protections like possible IP locks or hardware ones 'Please tell us why you are suddenly logging in from Xambibia' or 'That is a new computer, please email verify its clearance.'
but
I know people in the armed forces who love Eve and they do travel. Worse, even if they do not take their game with them they have buddies they trust doing 'EULA breaking things' by playing skill queue online for them. I dislike setting up new hurdles to keep people who love the game and their respective countries from playing and staying. Those are the ULTIMATE casual players and the ones I try to keep in mind when discussing changes.
I found variations of this discussion going all the way back to CSM4 (and it probably goes back further).
tl:dr + security is good show me a specific proposal and I will tell you whether IT is good the security folks seem to like it to be mandatory some players would want it optional

Hi Mike,
I think you're going to top my ballot this year across all my accounts. However, I'm interested in what you feel needs attention in low sec. I'm a FW player and I like roaming for PvP. I guess my biggest gripe is links. I think they need to be on-grid and I think even the fleet bonuses should work this way.
IMO FW needs to have more in terms of building up a system that is important to the whole faction and in general there needs to be more to make a system feel like home to a player. I would particularly like anything tying those two ideas together.
Low sec tends to miss out in CSM as we are not generally large organised blocs. What can you do to represent? |

A quick quote from the Summer Summit Minutes
Quote:Mike Azariah suggested tying the status of PvE systems to larger aspects of the game. He gave an example: if the Gallente were doing badly in FW, taxes in Gallente space might increase slightly "to fund the war effort". This would hopefully increase awareness of FW.
Abraxis said that he had some designs for similar things, but that this would require getting a bunch of game designers in a room together and "shouting really loudly at them." Ali Aras suggested he get elected to CSM.
Abraxis noted however that tying largely-independent systems together was a very complicated balancing issue and would have to be done very carefully
I WANT FW to matter to more than just folks trying to decide when to cash in LP. I would LIKE the changes there to echo through Hisec and Dust and Even open up specific battlegrounds in Valkyrie (If that becomes possible)
Big dreams . . . but you asked.
Lowsec representation? Well, at least there are some viable candidates available and I recommend you add them to your ballot (but I appreciate being on the top) But if I claim to worry about the game as a whole then I do need to pay attention to Low, especially when (or if) it doesn't have its own advocate. The second thing is Low is the OTHER place where casual players go (aside from high) and That kind of player is who I support/represent, no matter where in space they may be.
What I don't want. Low being Null lite What I do want. Unique reasons to go to each type of space and specific play-styles for them, respectively.

I will say, when we are closer to elections who I think would be good people (in my opinion) to put on a ballot. Right now I am not even sure if all the horses are in the starting gate, yet.
CCP looks at the game, not a particular piece of it. They have to keep the whole picture present. When they fail to do that it is up to US to call them on it. Every feature that came out in CSM8 had the wormhole folks looking at it through the lens of their own constituency. Low sec lacked someone with the same focus. We TRIED to make the whole game better but on person banging the Lowsec drum? Wasn't there.
Was Low ignored? NO. But I do encourage lowsec to find folks to represent them this time so they are sure they have someone specifically focused on their wants and needs.
Problem is . . . which lowsec? FW? Pirating? PI and carebears? Can you show me the candidate who will properly represent ALL of Low or are you, like highsec, a segmented population?

I had posed the following in a thread named GÇ£Why freighter bumping in High Sec is an exploitGÇ¥
What say you?
I will state right here and now that I believe the bumping of a freighter with the intent of holding it in place while your fiends arrive to perform the gank is an exploit. Here are the reasons why.
1. The only reason you bump is to avoid the wrath of CONCORD.
2. There are other ways to hold a ship in place, all of which come at a cost in training time and equipment. If bumping is allowed to replace the need for this training and equipment the bumper has the advantage of now being able to forgo the needed equipment and fill that slot with something else. This in effect will unbalance the ship by giving it the ability of the modules skipped over and the ones used in their stead.
3. Every intended mechanic has a counter and this does not. DonGÇÖt even try to say bring friends, as that is not a counter to any mechanic other than being out numbered. When was the last time you told someone asking how to fight a faster ship to bring friends?
4. There is no skill to train for bumping nor to counter bumping.
In the end it comes down to this, you are bumping to achieve the same results or better with no training time or investment in equipment that is achieved by a player that makes those investments. You are doing this with the solo intent to avoid the wrath of CONCORD that the player who has trained and bought the equipment is subject to.

Although you have the words of Winston Churchill correct I don't believe you quite understand how he used them. You see he would use them as words of encouragement to hold steadfast and complete the goal. Here you seem to apply a negative connotation to them as if Mike's steadfastness was something not to be admired.
I do wonder, just what kind of person still post in the forums of a game he is no longer is playing and that was created by a company he clearly has negative feelings about.

Mike's excellent answer highlights why maximising the diversity of expertise and game experience is much more important than "winning" the CSM with 10 'hi-sec' or 10 'null' candidates.

I already have made suggestions as to changes I would like to see but I have no problem reiterating
1) More lore, a change an advancement of Kuvekeis plans or an exploration of where the hell he got this tech in the first place 2) Other pirate factions steal the tech and we begin to see other sorts of incursions, each with their own flavour and need for specialized fleets (somebody wrote me about this idea asking if there would then be a chance for the Gurristas equivalent of a revenant, or a blood raider super I couldn't answer because I was gazing happily off into the distance) 3) Some variation within incursions that currently exist.

1) Do they have a history of a solid work ethic? 2) Have they shown their passion for this game? 3) Have they shown the ability to deal with other playstyles, other players who may not agree with them 4) Do they have the time to spare? 5) Are they the best representative of a unique/distictive side of Eve?
If you apply the above standard I am sure you will begin to make a short list for yourself but, as I said, I will be doing the same once I think I know somethign about all who are running.
