I must be working under an incorrect assumption that the higher the meta level the better the item, generally. Which has left me confused about the Gallente Mining Laser which is story line and Meta 8. When compared to the CU Vapor Particle Bore Stream I which is Meta 4, the lower level module has better range and production at either equal or less power draw. There is no facet of the meta 8 that is better then the meta 4 so now I need clarification on just what the meta level actually means. |

Did you read through that first to see if it answered my question or did you just post it? It doesn't by the way. |

Less CPU. Less power. Less activation. If those don't matter to you it is moot. "Measure Twice, Cut Once." |

My derp.
Page I meant to link was to a similar discussion that happened earlier: https://forums.eveonline.com/default.aspx?g=posts&t=225569
That Gallente Mining Laser is one of those weirdo drops that CCP kind of forgot about. IIRC there's a similar MLU or gas harvester or something (storyline item but terrible performance). But your original assumption was the correct one; higher meta = usually better, except for some Meta 4s that are better than T2 equivalents by virtue of having the same performance for lower fitting requirements. |

Sort of relevant;
I was training an alt for trade/standings and some Gal miners dropped in a level 2 mission. I saw the faction icon in the corner of the item and was like, HOLY CRAP! SCORE!!! Then I checked market prices and

All of this talking about mining laser metas brings back fond memories of the Rokh being a common mining vessel. (I still have a set of Modulated Deep Core Miner II's for my Rokh somewhere, I'm sure.)
With the Venture being the only vessel to use traditional mining lasers now, I don't think that anyone pays much attention to rebalancing them. |

So, been gone a few years, what do people use to mine now? |

Barges were rebalanced with ore holds, and all of them now have a role. The venture is a cheap starting mining frigate. All of the old mining ships besides barges were repurposed. I don't mine (at least I haven't in a very long time), but the mining barge advantages/disadvantages are self-evident if you look at their stats. |

The Gallente Mining Lasers were part of a Caldari mission, either level 1 or level 2. There was no equivalent in any other Empire and so there was a considerable trade in "Faction" mining lasers to newer players who hadn't worked out how to use Show Info (IIRC the Compare tool did not yet exist) and the prices were quite good. However, as the mission required the destruction of six (I think) Gallente mining ships, each of which dropped a mining laser, the market was soon sufficiently flooded that the abundance, and therefore the more obvious shilling, became clear. The lasers themselves were, as I recall, on the Basic/Civilian tech tree rather than the T1 and Basic/Civilian mining lasers actually had higher CPU requirements than the T1. It may be that the Gallente mining laser does actually follow the Meta 8 progression of yield and CPU cost appropriately for that tree. Comparison between the two tech trees is of little value however - and mining lasers have always been a bit wierd anyway.

The EvE market is supply and demand anyway. Even if meta 4 modules are 'better' than meta 8 modules... the market prices will reflect that. |

meta items can be used in invention to help with the probability of a successful invention, meta 8 gal mining lasers can be used to great effect on the Miner II inventions. Its not possible to please all the people all the time, but it sure as hell is possible to Displease all the people, most of the time.

Except you're wrong on all 3, the lower meta item has the better stats. |

no one cares about faction mining lasers
people don't care about faction mining lasers, and you shouldn't either. "CCP is changing policy, and has asked that we discontinue the bonus credit program after November 7th. So until then, enjoy a super-bonus of 1B Blink Credit for each 60-day GTC you buy!"

Meta level is an indication of rarity, with a certain few exceptions and guidelines. Many of the items can be controlled by players, for example you could produce an absurd amount of meta 5 items and hence make them MUCH more common than meta 4's for example. That said, there is nothing saying that a lower meta should be better than a higher meta, or the opposite for that matter. While rarity typically coincides with performance, it's just that - coincidences. It does however make sense, if it's harder to come by an item, you kind of expect it to be better, if not why bother looking for it at all? |
