I'm thinking about buying a new Mac mini and getting a really sick monitor. After installing Windows XP on it, will I be able to run Eve? Also, if I upgrade to Windows Vista in January, will I be able to download Direct X 10?

The iMac will run Windows XP. It will not have a DX10 compatible graphics card though (there are no DX10 cards available for that matter) ---- EVE-Central.com | Obsidian Technologies - 0.0 Manufacturing, Defense and Logistics. We're hiring! Mail me |

Yes Eve will run, but you will be very disapointed with the performance. The intergrated graphics on the Mac mini are a bit on the low end side. Expect mid 20's fps and single figure fps when the screen gets busy

Would it run any better on a MacBook Pro?

Yea, way better. The Macbook Pro has an ATI X1600. Its a big jump from a Mac mini to a MBP. If you hang on until june/july the Macbook should be announced/released. Not sure of the final details on the graphics card in them though.

Edited by: Orable on 03/05/2006 21:19:06 Can verify that it does indeed work fine on a MacBook Pro. Colours seem a little 'washed out' in comparison to my desktop but eve itself is totally playable. You'll need to download, run and install Bootcamp, install Windows XP and then install some drivers provided by Apple. I'm using a 2.0 GHz with 2GB ram and 7200 rpm SATA drive. Doesn't work with Parallels VM Beta 2.5. Will try again with the new 2.6 that's just out

It's unlikely that it's ever going to work with Parallels I'm afraid as it needs to use the 3D aspects of the graphics card which is something that's really hard to implement with that kind of software.

Same here, if anyone wants pictures of my EvE online summer setup (desktop abandoned, Macbook Pro with windows installed and eve + various wireless internet tools) you are welcome to ask. Runs like a charm, better than my desktop.

Does anyone know how to handle the "zoom" feature (or any other feature that requires left + right mouse click at the same time) on the map screen with a macbook pro?

I know that in general, Macs support two button PC standard USB mice in OS X, though I am hoping that someone could comment on how well this is supported on a Macbook Pro running some version of Windows- I'm actually considering buying a new Macbook Pro and doing just that, and maybe running this game on it?

Currently the MBP have a GF8600M with 128 Mb RAM Built-In... i have EVE currently running on CrossOver, which works except some glitches quite nicely.

regarding the mouse question.
i'm running a macbook pro 2.4ghz (the new one with LED backlight and nvidia graphics) with bootcamp and XP to play eve. and i'm using the wireless (bluetooth) apple mighty mouse. works fine. i wouldn't recommend that mouse for any first person shooters but for eve it's ok.
just one thing that doesn't work -> you can't push more than one mousebutton at a time (so no freehand camera zooming) because there is only one microswitch for the left/middle/right button.

I am very interested in your set up. I have a MacBook Pro 17" ATI 1600 running Parallels with Win XP. With the new Trinity upgrade I would be very interested in tweaking my mac to help in enhance the graphics.
