hi all, i am just feeling frusturated at the moment but i will try not to rant. im the same guy who posted about the "anti-pirates" of arifsdald. they blew up my ship under suspicion of being a pirate. now, weeks later we were mining again... and got jumped.
theres some things i think about that put me at a disadvantage: -mining setup, no weapons but drones. in fact i was using mining drones so i had to wait about 20 seconds for them to return to ship while under heavy fire. -battleship, slow to align for warp. also got called primary. sitting duck.
i can see why there is so much whining about stabs now. the pirates hate them, the carebears love them. it's because any ship with a mining setup is considerably gimped, period. even with great skills, an attack by multiple battlecruisers (as was my case) or even 6+ bs (seen it, now thats what i call a nasty pirate assault) cannot be easily tanked. carebears put 6 or more stabs on their ships to garuntee warp to safety, because staying and fighting is so difficult and outcome is not in your favor. in fact, with each passing minute a player sits in his bs mining he gets softer. and every minute the pirate moves quickly system to system hunting, he gets stronger.
roids attract miners. miners attract pirates. pirates attract anti-pirates. they fight and over time roids grow back. the cycle gets completed. after losing about 65mil isk worth of ships and gear i'm thinking some risk vs reward changes over a period of time. for example, mid-day sunday afternoon a lowsec system can be completely quiet. me and a buddy mine in peace, and my dominix has no trouble killing the rats. but then if you mine their long enough, you have been there the whole time and are like a big beacon attracting piracy from pirates passing through. sunday night, pirates are more active and in bigger numbers. that beacon of attraction gets magnified many times. or am i wrong? maybe it's just gambling and sooner or later a pirate will stop to say hi. not a matter of if but when. but the timezones are definitely a factor.
"maybe you should just mine in a thorax instead" when my buddy said that it made me really mad and i'm not sure why. maybe because of all the effort i exerted to obtain and maintain my 1 and only battleship. but in the long run he is right. although roughly 5 times weaker of a ship the cost of losing 1 is 30 times lower. i would risk about 1.5mil instead of 35mil. the reward is roughly the same, with perhaps not quite as many mining lasers fitted.
so which factor is most critical? the factors of ship-type, skill, and street smarts? or just expecting the worst and obeying risk vs reward?

So was your ship totally uninsured, or did you just have 65mil worth of insurance and fittings/

The way I see it a ship with a pure mining set-up is no match for anything beyound a civilian ship so yeah WCS all the way and never mind the nonsense about what's so "wrong" about WCS. Best bet is to have a friend guard over you as you mine.

I'm sorry pal, but if you can't watch local and use your scanner then you deserved to get ganked. Warp stabs are NOT an "I win button" stop thinking they are, all it does is make pirates want to bring more friends along and hence forth, kick your ass faster then when you realize what is going on.
When your mining you should be aligned to a celestrial object at all times so all you have to do is get your engines warmed up and your out of there. Preparation is the key.

Utter rubbish. He'll die too.
The best bet is to keep you eye on local. Treat anybody who is not a confirmed friendly with suspicion.
Don't just warp to a belt at 15km and start mining, move to the edge of it so people cant warp in and land on top of you. Align for safe / station as soon as you arrive.
It's your own savvy that will save you in this situation.

Safety is provided by proper scouting. And EVE is not a single player game. If your enemies hit the belt while you are in it you did something wrong.

wcs fit for mining is fine with me just makes pirates need to adapt.
my arguement with wcs is when pvpers wear them because omg i might lose a ship doing this and when they do on the forums because they got ganked by multiple ships because it was needed to hold him there

after some thought, low-sec mining solo or small groups comes down to 2 choices:
1. watch local like a hawk. scan constantly. constantly stay aligned to warp. mine only on slow parts of the day, and never during peak hours. on the first sign of danger, warp out or log.
2. mine whenever. fit 7 wcs and shield extenders. warp out when anyone warps in and attacks.
which one sounds easier to you?

Edited by: Lochmar Fiendhiem on 16/04/2006 05:34:37 Here's how I do it.
Set up a really good safe (or a pos if you can) drop an indy there with at least 3 giant secure cans in it.
Drop three cans on the belt at your chosen insta (it's more noticeable, but better in the long run).
Go get your mining ship, mine to the three secure cans (dont worry about anchoring them). When you fill those 3, get your indy, drop the three empty cans in your hold and scoop the three full ones.
Empty the full cans and go back to mine.
Always have local open (and not in the same window grouping as corp chat, etc) Local chat is the biggest advantage you have.
ALWAYS align to something (planet, station, safe) Planets and stations are not safe.
Mine somewhere out of the way. Don't mine on known highways, pirates will check the belts as they pass from point A to B.
Systems without stations are your friend. Less people frequent there as there isn't anywhere to dock to repair etc.
Don't use mining drones. If you have the room, mix it up, set up a couple sentry drones that have a range that will have the warp in point within the optimal range, and use some light or medium scout drones to deal with pesky intys/assualt frigs.
Mine in groups. One mining barge by itself is a sitting duck, even with 5 drones. Five or six barges however, with 30 or more drones can really cause some hurt with good drone skills.
Mine in high security. Really, then it's just pesky scavengers.
Get a command ship. Use those gang assist mods on mining and drone gang assist mods. Couple this with 5-6 barges and you've got yourself a mining op that can put up a fight for a few minutes.
Maybe build some capital and put a pilot in a small carrier. Every corp should have one. Carriers are a great asset.
Teamspeak/ventrilo. It works. great for coordinating ops. Get your corp to use it.
Just be ready to run away at the first sign of trouble. If someone jumps into system, here is what you should do (you should already be close to aligned to your safe);
Align to warp (set speed to half and set your ship pointed just above your just below your choosen safe spot).
Do a show info on the character that just jumped. any signs of pirate, warp to your safe (read bio, read corp description).
Wait till pirate leaves system, do not talk to him, or engage in conversation or smack.
Go back to mining.
EDIT: when you encounter rats (npc) blow up your loot cans as well. Leave no evidence of recent activities.

I haven't mined in ages but I'd like to add a few things.
1. Always watch local. 2. Always watch local. 3. Use a couple of wcs on your mining ship. 4. Be aligned to warp out all the time. 5. Be a coward, don't stay in the belt if you're feeling bad about someone who just entered local. 6. Don't stay and fight. A mining ship wont have a chance against a combat ship. 7. Make your own mining BMs a bit away from the belt center. 8. Always watch local. It's possible to enter a small system, scan, find and warp to the right belt in less than a minute.
Another thing, wcs are good on a mining, hauling or travelling ship. The whine about wcs is when you fit them on a combat ship.

Quick clarification for a relative newb....
Is it that less profitable to mine in a 0.5 or 0.6?
Or are there non-npc threats there too?

Stab yourself to high hell, let people whine about it. Its your enjoyment, not theirs.
Also i thought about this lately...how about using ECM as an effective means of avoiding combat/leaving fight instead of WCS? Ill assume your in a dominix, so you could use EW drones as well.
And then i thought about this one as well... Sentry drones + 2 or 3 webs on a potential pirate. Basically let them get within 10km, web them to high hell, release the sentries, watch the fun ensue!
But really, i think having a friend/corpmate in a blackbird or domi with ECM would be quite worthwhile. Would let you leave unscathed and you could jam multiple opponents.

Set half a dozen secure cand and mine into them with an osprey, and sit aligned to warp while mining.

Watch local like a hawk.
And keep your ship pre-aligned to a safespot at all times.
If anyone enters system accelerate to full speed, if anything warps in simply click warp
no need for stabs, completely invincible (unless some tard bumps you ) Once into safespot do not think haha im safe, and begin to spam local. Re-align for a new safespot (or a cluster of belts/planets) and be rdy to warp out again. Then u can spam local But be nice or they'l probably stay longer just to annoy you.
