I was reading the Dev blog and they were saying the average Eve account is only active 7mo and I can definately see why. Also, look at the trading forums and it seems characters that are around longer get passed around a good bit. I have been playing Eve less than 3mo and I'm already finding it really dull. I found out quickly that a cruiser can survive 0.1 if correctly outfitted so I made over 250mil in less than 4 weeks. I got my Raven before I had the skills and I flew it before I had 1mil SP. Now I know it may not be outfitted as well as it could be blah blah but I now have a decent ammount of Tech2 stuff on it and missions are hardly challenging. In fact, that's what I think I'm noticing, whether it's missions or ratting it's more SP than it is anything I actually do. Can't do a mission? Train Tech2 <insert item here> and all of a sudden you can do it. How do you guys keep yourself interrested in Eve? I know I could go PvP but I'd either be griefing noobs or I would be losing to people who have 10mil SP+. I am a HUGE PvPer but in Eve there doesn't seem to be any skill in combat. If you have the right outfittings for the situation (no skill involved just knowledge) and you have more SP than the other guy you win. If the SP/outfittings are equal it's all random number generators. I have NEVER only played 1 toon which I think is most of my problem since you can only train 1 person per account. I'm not going to pay for a second account so yeah....what do you do to keep yourself playing Eve? |

You are under a huge misconception.
In pvp, a fight is usually won before it even begins. Tactics, teamwork and skill are about 80% of the fight, skill points 15%, and 5% luck. No matter how many skill point you have, you can pvp. Eve is better when you play with a group of people.
My best advice is to look for a good pvp corp. That's the best part of Eve. And you should try getting into an alliance out in 0.0. That's where the biggest most fun battles happen. ---------------------------------- I <3 mining. |

EVE PvP can be a pain to get used to, thats for sure. 6 months in I'm still not quite used to the whole 'point and click' in space style of flying and if it were up to me it would get changed tommorow.
But now that Shadowbane, Planetside and UO are all more or less dead, EVE is the only decent MMO build with PvP in mind.

The average EVE account is around 7 months because the vast majority are trials and thus pull down the average. In addition, many people play 5 months, quit, and then come back finding that all other games seem pathetic by comparison.
And of course there's skill in combat

Like Padaxes, I have been playing a while although not as long but with similar breaks for RL issues. I still manage to keep myself occupied and entertained even though I don't PVP.
Missions to begin with are pretty boring and as you get better ships, they get easy until the next level. Once you start doing level 3 and 4 and up, even the most hardened players can have problems and this is when teamwork plays an important role because higher level missions are not really designed to be done solo.
0.0 is where most of the real PVP is found and getting into an alliance there will help you really start to get into fleet battles and such. It's not my scene but I'm told it's great fun by PVP fans.

I definately think I need to be getting into a 0.0 alliance. How does one go about doing that? I came from EQ PvP then went to DAoC then to (as much as it pains me to say it) a PvP server on WoW. Is there any good way to experience PvP in this game without becomming a pirate and dropping my sec rating? I would like to try it but I really don't want to get hunted because of a low sec status. |

Nice link. I used to RP to a great extent but if any of you are old-school EQ gamers you'll know that most story-lines are created then never finished. Why? You can't ever actually beat the game in an MMO. In the end all they are is farming cash to do something whether that be RP or farm more or PvP. That's just the nature of the beast.
What I guess I'm saying is now that I'm facing 12-20 day trains there isn't much more to do than farm. I could downgrade to my ferox or a frig and do something that won't earn as much money or challenge me as much as high lvl missions but until I spend a month+ training for new ships there's not much interresting to do but hop in my Raven and do high level missions. I think that's where it gets tedious for new players. Maybe once I get some other advanced ships and I can change it up a bit it'll get more interresting. |

Join one of the hundreds of corps in one of those alliances.

There's a forum for recruiting. If you go there, you can find out who is recruiting and what they are looking for. If you don't find what you want there, try setting your goals a bit lower to begin with. Once you get into 0.0, you can get to know more people and maybe switch later to some corp that suits your play style. Good luck in your search.

Edited by: Cremter Ragnarok on 17/04/2006 08:39:35 My old character got into a fleet battle at 600k sp/ he got on a killmail there (darn missiles take to long to attack something else). He was also in an alliance and was in many fleets (not all of them got into engagements but..) in the course of going from 600k to 1.2m sp.
then i found out that high charisma is bad and that being 2.5 months old and being in a badly setup cruiser is also bad.
but yeah, skillpoints have nothing to do with pvp. in the fight i mentioned, the other team had a higher average SP than my side, and it was even numbers and we won because we had better tactics. ------------------- uhh.. what does this button do? |

To join an alliance, have a look in the alliance discussions forum, and decide which alliances you like the look of. Then, find a corperation in that alliance and apply like you would any other corperation. Most are very welcoming to new players.

I guess I wasn't very clear about the alliance part. I'm in a corp of all nub friends of mine and we were hoping to join an alliance but stay our own corp cause we're just lookin to have fun. Thx for the suggestions I'll check out the recruiting forum. |

Well this is the number 1 problem with mmorpgs these days imo and that is that people treat them as single player games and do stuff they would do in a single player game.
The whole idea of mmorpg, originally anyway, is that you "live" in a world of thousands of other people and the interaction with those people is what makes or breaks a mmorpg.
The reason I think alot of people are playing mmorpgs as single player games is because of the newer mmorpgs like WoW, City of Heroes etc. They are very like a single player game with little freedom for the players to affect the world.
Im new but from what Ive seen so far Eve is not like that. You can build starbases and have fleets of players defending that station against other groups of people and I think that is where the really fun is. I may be wrong though... time will tell. "I am the Homo Superior." Mike Tyson |
