I was experiencing what I thought was "client side lag" or poor framerates. I was running a radeon 9600 pro (256mb). I've since installed a Geforce 7800 GS (256 mb). I have to tell you I notice very little difference. In fact i would even say the image quality is less than the 4 year old radeon card. The poor frame rates in larger NPC battles is still exists. It seems that docking is a tad quicker.
The edges seem a bit more jagged and the metallic effect is less noticable with the Geforce.
I have a 3 gig p4, 1 gig of rambus, for reference.
Just a heads up if you are considering upgrading for EvE.
I have seen the Arctic Circle... And it is round. |

Aye, I saw little difference from an 5200FX PCI to a 7900gt PCI-E. This game is extremely CPU dependant.

Thanks. I'll keep my trusty Radeon 9600 Pro for awhile longer then.

My 128MB 6600GT bit the dust, and I had to fall back on my old 128MB GeForce4 MX4000. My framerate dropped by at least half, and lag is a real *****, especially when you want it least (ie, heat of battle).
Gotta save up some cash for another 6600GT, or better... Sometimes your card DOES matter...

Edited by: Chedburn on 18/04/2006 04:54:52 I upgraded from 9800 to an X1800 and it is amazing! Anti-Aliasising X6 makes the edges of the roids and stations soo smooth not to mention the ships look beautiful and i cannot imagine them looking any better than they do. Also i should add, amazing framerate.

I upgraded from some radeon something something 128mb low-end card to a GF6800 Ultra, and I got like 10 more fps haha
As said above, it sucks cpu as hell, gpu doesn't matter all that much in EVE.

GeForce all they way, ever since I bought the new ATI card (8x) Ive had nothing but graphics lag in Quake 4, Doom 3 etc at 1600x1200. Im going back to GeForce ASAP when there next card hits. Then Im wating for Vista, then DX10, THEN NEW EVE!!! FASTER!!! :P I cant wait.....

First off, I've used both ATI and nVidia products, and I have been a hard fast supporter of ATI for years, but as of late, I'm sick of it. I have a mobile radeo 9700, and it always has "some" issue.
10% faster performance? big whoop... having a drive that doesn't waste a day of my time with every new game? That's a selling point for me. Besides, if you average 60FPS or more with all features maxed out, then there's not even a performance reason to change cards as many displays max at 60, and your eye cannot detect higher framerates.
My next laptop, nVidia only, or I'll find another brand. They just do a better job.
------------------- Part 2 lol
Just a point here too... I'm running EVE on an Inspiron 9100, and it's far less CPU intensive than Warcraft. However, it all depends on bottleneck... if the CPU is slow and that's holding up the graphics card, then yea, a better graphics card won't matter. Buf if you're on an Athlon 64 and the game is slow, you probably need a graphics card... because the situation is reversed. That's just how it goes.
Make sure you can return the card you purchase within 30 days of the purchase date, and there's is no restocking fee. It's hardware... what are you going to do? Make a copy to a CD?

Even if we talk about CPU and video card, another thing a computer always need and if it is used is the memory, i upgrade a while back at 1 gig of ram, and its impressive how 2 accounts can run the machine.
do not forget that speed is affected by the cpu, memory, harddrive and the gpu. Changing of them of can help (usually the cpu will affect more) but better when changing all. But sure, its costly. _______________________ Recruting

Well, what were your framerates to begin with in gangs and fleets? My Radeon Mobility 9700 - is not all that hot - and I want to see smoothness, not 2-4 fps in fleets of 300-400, or even 150.

Also another issue is the memory bandwith.
My old comp had Dual PIII 1 gig processors computing power the same as a 2.2 PIV (according to sisoft). But the memory bandwith was only 400mb/s (Slow memory, after upgrade it went to 750mb/s) Which caused the fps to be the same as another machine that was running with a celeron 1300 but then on a newer mainboard with higher bandwith.
In those computers my GFX2, GFX440, FX5700XT, GFX6600GT cards all come close to the same value in FPS. 10-14 fps no matter what. Except in fleet stuff where it would drop to 0 with each card.
Now if i test all these cards in my current PIV i see the range of FPS according to the actual vid card performance. Low End Minerals Trader Based in Verge Vendor; Alentene VI-6. Was the the bandwidth of the motherboard - or the video card? If it was memory - I believe that is incredible slow.
My problem is graphics are beautifule - it just can't render alot of things, well - no matter what their size - or how far out I am.

Anyone considering an upgrade of their graphics cards also need to consider their PC's AGP bus speed. All the specs given out for newer cards assume a suitable bus speed for the card. Upgrading may not change anything if the card you already have is meant for a higher data transfer rate than your PC can put out.
Most graphics in Eve are handled by the CPU (software rendering FTW) so a new graphics card won't solve anything if it's actually the CPU that needs upgrading.

I have played EVE on AMD 2400+ with Geforce 3 to X2 3800+ with 7800GT. As long as you have 1gig DDR266 and a Geforce 3 or Radeon 95XX series graphics cards you will be fine. EVE will run on a Geforce 2 based GPU but remember the textures will look like crap.
As for CPU vs GPU : My laptop is a AMD64 3000+ with a Geforce 2go 420 ( Geforce 4 MX with 32bit memory bus ) and trust me it plays eve like crap even with a good CPU at the lowest possible settings.

I have a athlon 64 x2 4400+ CPU ATI PCI-E adn found the ATI drivers lacking and then went and got the Omega drivers and solved a lot of problems I was having in game. www.omergadrivers.net is where you can get those. he has mainly ATI and some old nvidia. Most of the ppl that I have diected here have found much better play with his drivers over the stock.

Eve does seem to use a lot of processor time. I have a duel core 4800 cpu and Eve runs both cores at around 80% usage most of the time.
I have crossfire with a X1900 and X1900XTX and dont have any problems with ATI drivers for eve. It is a bit funny about what settings you use in CCC but this is EVE that is at fault not the drivers (as it works perfectly fine for every other game).
Get about 90FPS on average, drops to 80 min when there is a lot going on and when i warp it goes as high as 120. Without the FPS meter on though i cant tell the difference between any of them :)

Eve sucken with it's cpu usage. For example I leave fraps running in the background and it's reporting I've getting 100 or so frames a second and my CPU is at 100%. Active the fraps record feature and set it to record only 30 frames a second and guess what... eve drops to only 30 frames a second *and* lowers the cpu usage as it's now limiting what work it's doing.
Eve shouldn't be spinning the cpu like it does do and should honour the frame rate that most eyes support; 25-30 frames a second is more than we need and the rest of the cpu time would allow the cpu to cool slightly, reduce power, world peace etc.

Edited by: Aves on 09/05/2006 15:38:05 Hello, I just upgraded from 9800PRO to 7800GS but now I'm experiencing problems with the graphics card shutting down randomly. My monitor enters sleep mode, and I cannot return to my desktop either. This only happens when I play EVE, and all I can do then is restart my system. Anyone had similar problems? or any advice? Thanks in advance. I have P4 3.0GHz on a Asus P4P800-VM motherboard with 1GB memory.
