It's a given that when our ships have reached the end of their useful lives, they are re-purposed in one form or another. Most people refine and recycle the resulting minerals into new ships, but one of my brothers has taken this repurposement of ships one step further.
Now, he is not a capsuleer, but knows where to buy used ships planetside. Usually from salvage firms that have gotten hold of small hulls that are beyond normal repair. He apparently went to one of these, bought an old, rusting Ibis hull, and then proceeded to prepare land for the delivery. I recall thinking it weird - why would he dig a huge gaping hole on his land? I was puzzled, really.
Until I saw what he had done with that old Ibis. Not only had he restored the exterior, he had fit the ship into that gaping hole, and completely renovated the interior, and now he calls it home. The cockpit area he had turned into an entrance, requiring breaking through the glass. He has converted the cargohold to a completely spacious living area, complete with windows he had carved into the hull. The old drone bay is now a bathroom. He had made a bedroom where the engineering space once was. It's inspiring really.
And all this has made me wonder if there was anyone else that has seen strange uses for old hulls. Has anyone else witnessed something like this, or other odd usage?
Oh yeah, on a related note...
He told me that if anyone from Galnet would be interested, he had to slice the engines off with an industrial-strength laser. He's selling them for 100 ISK each, the tiny thrusters on the side are 25 ISK each. You can find him through my CONCORD file. |

I'm not sure if you're familiar with the Golgothan Fields in the Ennur starsystem, but there's a number of derelict ships there we turned into places suitable for living; visiting these installations firsthand, I can tell you sleeping inside a muzzle of a repurposed 3500mm howitzer on a Naglfar-class wreck is much more comfortable than it sounds.
If you visit though, stay wary of the locals. They're not always that hospitable to strangers. - Leopold Caine, Domination Malakim ___________________________ Angels are never far... Stillwater Corporation recruitment open. |

I've heard of alternative uses before, in fact a friend once suggested that we convert a ship into a social venue when I mentioned we needed one.
We took a brand new Rokh and had it's interior and combat systems stripped away, converting it into a hotel of sorts for visitors and friends to stay in when they visited our family's system. It also had a deck dedicated to holo-communications where others could "visit" remotely or converse with our pilots when not on duty. The vessel itself sat under our tower's force field where it was tethered to nearby structures. Major (Ret.) Back when I worked at null-security space, I have seen an old Titan turned into a full-fledged space station.
The corporation was living on the very edge of known space, and their control towers weren't enough for their needs but they didn't have resources to build or buy a proper station. By chance, a nearby allied corporation had an old obsolete Titan they were going to scrap, but instead preferred to make a friendly deal with the neighbour corporation.
Although a Titan is already a space station of sorts, they sacrificed its mobility in order to attach other modules that allowed industrial production, larger laboratories, and even a clone station.
I consider it the apex of Minmatar jerry-rigging. |

I hear they tried to do something similar with a titan on caldari prime, but failed. The lack of money is the root of all evil. |

Most surely are, and I'm yet to discover their secrets and properly apply them to my researches. I'll be a richer man when this happens. |

Lots of things to do with them. Give them to charities for salvage. Turned a few into temporary stations and houses for refugees. Anchor them in out of the way places and use them for dead-drop locations or covert meeting places. Disguise them as derelicts and load them up with surveillance equipment. Rig it up to send out false RFID signals and lay them as bait. Leave it in an asteroid belt packed with explosives and rig the thrusters to fire by remote, and then ram them into unsuspecting Federation miners. Ect. |

There are quite a few clubs in the Federation that are made out of old ships. In the case of Opux Luxury yachts, they are still fully functional ships.
Capital ships and even Battleships have always proven to be excellent homes away from home and temporary stations.

I've often found that a lot of the shuttle-class vessels are fun to make into private little escorts to ship people comfortably. Specifically, the Apotheosis is fun to gut and turn into a miniature little room for guests to muck around in while a capsuleer or pilot flies it. Then again, that's not exactly an "alternate" use. I remember someone mentioning turning the Zephyr into a luxury shuttle-esqe by gutting some spare space, which was an interesting idea. Too bad the ship is God/Gods-awful.
For a while, I remember a small piece of the GPD having issues with being based on the world they were stationed on. After gutting a Navy Dominix, they would live up there in an artificial little city and send people down when needed. Didn't really work out, but it was fun. |

I usually look at them less as mobile architecture like many of the respondents here, and more as salvage components.
For instance, a ship reactor may outlive the spaceframe depending on use, and can make a good municipal generator for a new development. A fair number of components can similarly be reused for other projects or even refurbished to build and repair other ships.
One thing my private firm does especially is try to reuse expert systems from older test bed ships when building new test craft. Computers don't suffer the same wear and tear of mechanical systems, and they can better cope with non-standard errors the more times they are encountered. |

Not exactly as drastic an alternative use as that Ibis, but I have had my Orca extensively modified to house a luxury apartment for myself in a space that used to be an observation deck in the aft tower. The view from there, towards the bow and into space is breathtaking.
As a more temporary measure, I've had part of the old ore bay turned into barracks for my onboard Marine company. Security is important to me.
I've also been to a few bars built into old starships. I remember one in a Rifter. Nice place. You can't take the sky from me

My own Orca has been modified to be better for long tern habitation since it serves as a mobile base of operations.
The crew quarters have been rearranged and improved a bit, and I have rearranged the ore bay to make more room for a hydroponics bay and garden and the recreational facilities are also expanded so the crews of the docked ships can use them. Non-critical corridors are a bit narrower, but crew morale doesn't drop as quickly on long duration missions. |

Sometimes i need some time in space ouside of my capsule, so I use an old thorax hull as a luxury liner every once in a while. altough i only operate it in less crowded systems because of the obvous danger to my life if i get attacked by other capsuleers. |

There's nothing wrong with old ships Ms Diana ... With a little work and imagination they can be restored, any corrosion removed, resprayed and refitted with up to date modules and be better and more beautiful than the original! |

I can tell you with absolute certainty that there is almost always someone interested in using used ship parts... Humans seem to have an irresistible urge to always take something designed for one purpose and use it the most unpredictable ways. Usually to their own detriment...
From an old archive I found:
Human Ingenuity at Work!
Personally I'd ask for a waiver before signing away those thrusters... Insanity is not hubris, not pride; it is inflation of the ego to its ultimate - confusion between him who worships and that which is worshipped. Man has not eaten God; God has eaten man.
