Oh there's been a few very amusing ore thieves.
There's Menod Pentor financing his bid for Rens Mayorship, and there's been Syrahm Arya saving up for a Battleship to provide a better home for her Tech 2 baby.
I've seen a Harpy move a block of ice exceeding their own cargo capacity by some 500% to their own can for later pickup in a hauler, so the ore thieves are picking up on their professional skills so to speak.
It's only a matter of time till you get the first major professional ore-theft corp outfit in places like Jita, of say 2 battleships and a hauler "grooming" the jetcan miners. I've seen some half-hearted attempts in Teonusude already.

After all this whining about ore thieves, I'd like to tell a true story.
First of all, I'm a mad carebear, nothing makes my day better, than stripping a system bare with a couple of friends. But yet, I do like ore thieves, at least, if they truly are ore thieves and play their role Hence, this little story, in the hope to inspire all those wanna be ore thieves, whom all can learn a lot from the master ore thief himself, Ceti.
One day, SemiCharmed and me, were mining in Renyn into a jetcan as usual, he was mining, I was hauling. Knowing Renyn was quite ore-thief infested, we called in the help of one of our other corpies, Jack Tundra, to keep an eye on things in his Prophecy and scare of any ore thieves. Only prob was, he had to ready his Prophecy yet, so couldn't be around from the start. And yes, as usual/predicted/warned, an ore thief showed up. Trixie Labouche, flying a nice and cute Thorax. Offcoz, she sees those two 'dumb' miners and heads of to our can and steals... one unit of plag (no, we aren't dumb and yes, we took our ore back in ) Pity for her, we weren't even less dumb miners than she took us for, with Jack warping in mere seconds after she had stolen our precious unit of plag. Lock, load and fire And Trixie was the proud owner of a lot of expensive spacedust and... one unit of plag So far goes the example for the stupid ore thieves. Now however, comes the part about the smart ore thieves, because a couple of min afterward, whom shows up? Noone less than the master thief himself, Ceti. He gently pulls up to our nice gathering (Trixie still sitting by in her little egg). Me, always being the nice carebear, offcoz say hi to him. He politely responds to my hail and we chatter away a little. And then one of those little ironies of life came upon us. Ceti noticed Trixies can still floating around and kindly asks me wether he was allowed to loot it. Offcoz I said yes
I am aware some people are convinced Trixie is Ceti's alt, and for as far as I know, this well could be true. But being a true blue roleplayer, i simply couldn't resist the temptation of playing this to the fullest, and let one ore thief, steal from another
And yes, I had an enormous smile on my face for the remainder of the day http://www.battleclinic.com/kill_sigs/signature_display.php?string=Arwen%20Ariniel |

Edited by: Jason Marshall on 19/04/2006 14:29:26 Now i am in a minning corp, love it btw. Ore theives are awsome to...they allow me to get in some PvP action ^_^. Also i par take in this littl game when macroers move into the system, and when they do i will steal there ore. Altho i find there strip miners and modulated stripminers much more 'profitable'...even managed to sell one back to them at 2 times reginol.

I am also an ore thief. I don't do it for the profit. I could make a lot more with less effort NPCing in low sec. However, stealing ore is a lot more fun and I get to meet some interesting people.
On a side note, I've actually gotten better kills through stealing ore than through piracy. Total personal kills: 1 Osprey, 1 Hoarder. Kills by CONCORD: 1 Breacher, 1 Stabber, 1 Ferox. Had my probe destroyed once, for a loss of about 75k.
Anyways, stealing ore might not be good money, but it is a lot of fun.
For those of you who knew me, this is James Royal's new character.

lol i used to steal until i had enough for my adv learning but it got boring and doesnt pay much
i dont need to justify anything to myself or anyone else o.O i will do anything that gets me enough money since money makes the world go round
but i came up with a funny idea that worked you can canswap and demand some money for not blowing up the can :P you can gang up to allow them to canswap without flagging after they pay

It's always fun to play with ore thieves, be it dragging the can away from them with a tractor beam or equipping mining barges with warp scramblers and then telling corp mates to jump in and commence with the mosh-pit. Sadly, hearing the same old story about stealing crappy ore in secure space time after time really gets boring to hear. I really want to hear about somebody who tries to steal cans during a fleet battle somewhere (using covert ops perhaps?) while they're still fighting. I would imagine the story would actually be worth reading, in addition to actually making some decent money off loot provided you survive.

Quote: Is it me or is EVE becoming darker by the minute? Pirates, murderers, high sec ore thieves
Thats what happens after a while, players get board and because there are no real reprocussions they turn to the dark side.
This is especally true when the DEV team does not add content. PPL (well those that like to grief) here seem to have a problem with WOW but one thing you can say about WOW is that the DEV team was constently adding content. Heck there is a party going on somewhere as well as contests, collectables etc....
There is a reasion that CCP has stated that the average account is 7 months, thats how long it takes for the honeymoon to end and the average player to realize there is nothing new. Thats because 90% of the game has been ignored by the DEVs. Sure they beefed up the 10% of EVE that comprises direct PVP but totaly ignored the rest of the game.
This is equivlent to a kid sitting in a room, after a while they are board so they can eather leave the room or entertain themselves. Well if all they have to entertain themselves was a straw and a was of paper then the spitballs start flying.
Personnaly I have left EVE 2 times, I came back for the Kali release (well to train up for it). While I wait I am working on getting my silver star on BF2 but I digress...
Yes the game is getting darker, this would not be a bad thing as long as there is a ballance (RVR). I would prefer that the timer be for 24 hours not 15 min. Its annoying when you chase a ore thief and they make it to a station and log.
And that they are typically in starter corps. I welcome a ore stealing corp, at least they have the blanks to not hide in a starter corp.

just because theres a little stream of cs->wow->eve players it doesnt mean the game gets "darker" im quite sure most of them wont survive the average 7 months
i didn't read the whole changelog but it seems like the latest patches were largely dealing with pve aswell...
what kind of balance are you talking about ? theres far more people in highsec empire than in nosec and lowsec combined
[sarcasm]i would perfer that the timer is removed like it used to be, its so annoying when im flagged to 30 corps at once[/sarcasm]

Imbalance would be where a player with a few million skillpoints, a BS or better and T2 gear destroys and loots some newbie (who might have to spend a week or more recovering from the loss) and essentially the pirate is able to continue to do this unfettered.

Edited by: Ilor Prophet on 20/04/2006 21:36:04 Speaking as a miner, I have no problem with ore thieves. They're part of the game. It's one of the things that makes EVE interesting, in that even in the most mundane task, there are people out there who will keep you on your toes.
And for what it's worth, it's stupidly easy to keep ore thieves at bay. Dependable haulers, good placement, and secure containers ftw! But if you get lazy or sloppy, I take comfort in knowing that there are folks out there who will remind you to take the extra effort to secure your mining operation in the bluntest way possible.

Originally by: RedWyvern I'm not a miner, I don't devote much time pondering the issue, but please, don't bother coming here and trying to put a spin and what you're doing. Grief play. Low-level grief play, but it counts nonetheless.
People need to stop playing the grief card just because the action upsets someone else, a person is not a griefer just because someone feels grief, as odd as it may sound, it's true. Now if the thief does it simply to make others suffer, that's another story. Doing it for the challenge, reward, and personal enjoyment puts it on the same 'grifer' level as pirating.

That's not even the point. Why doesn't CCP just bar new players from .4 systems? Oh wait a sec that would keep a lot of new players from reaching other high sec areas now wouldn't it.
But anyways this topic is about ore thieves in high sec.

I routinely fly into low sec and no sec and steal everything not nailed to a roid. You would be suprised how many gate camping pirates cant tank centries for long enugh to collect there cans. then i swoop in and weeee free stuff! -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I am pathetic; 2 of NostradumusÆ quatrains revolve around me getting podded.

its called freedom... like said before eve is a sandbox its up to you what you want to do there are enough other games where devs and game mechanics enforce a path on you i dont see why freedom should be impaired because players lack self discipline
lowsec systems surrounded by highsec are usually guarded by anti pirate groups but the only pvp'ers you'd find there are either newbies or carebears gone rogue

Seeing as how I am a miner, I have to say that having ore thieves around is fun. Keeps you on your toes, and also puts those extra med slots on my ferox to good use (7.5km scrambler and a 20km scrambler).
To date, only 1 indy has tried to steal ore, he failed horribly and I had a good laugh.

I like ore thieves. Without then CCP probably would have nerfed the jetcan so once you jetison something you can't add more items to the can. Basically, jetcan mining just opened up a new career option.
Is it just me or do ore theives kinda remind you of hobos. Jetcans are the garbage and these guys come along and steal your garbage...just like hobos do. I want a dirty tuque on my badger...oh oh and the smell of urine and liquor.
