Well, I've been told I sound like I'm:
American Icelandic Dutch Australian Sweedish Danish Canadian
I am in fact from Scotland. I was born here and am living here right now.
What the hell is up with that? How does one pick up an accent? I assumed it was from your parents (both mine are Scottish). Seems a bit odd that so many people think I'm American. I did live there for a year or so, but I would have thought that living in Scotland 90% of my life would have given me a Scottish accent, at least a little. It doesn't matter where its on TS, on the phone or face to face. Nobody thinks I sound Scottish, or even English.
So the real question is: What is more sexy, a Scottish accent or my current "melting pot" accent?

I'm English but I spent so much time in the Far East that I picked up a lot of American words and phrases as well as learning to speak more precisely to make myself understood. Although my accent is English, the American words I often use really confuses people.
What's more confusing is people who try to pick up on the regional accent. Mine is a kind of posh South London (sawf lunden) accent although I actually come from East Kent.

WTF, French-Alabama? Do we even want to hear that?
I actually wonder what kind of accent I've got( no TS so you can't hear it), as long as it not Dutch( or any accent form the European mainland really) it's not to bad, I just hate a Dutch accent in English and I'm Dutch myself.

I've had people off the street ask me if I'm Canadian. I've never even been there before.
My accents come from: English - Family Friend I grew up around German- Lived there for 4 years California/West Coast/Hawaii Dude talk - Lived there Southern - live there (ugh.. wanna move. )
You wanna talk about "melting pot?" I'm it.
Thankfully, nobody on TS has ever asked me about it. I'm good at picking out accents though. I tease a Scottish customer I have about being Australian. lol. Poor guy. You can TELL he's from Glasgow, but people ask him where in Australia he's from. Every once in a while, I tease him, asking if he's going back home to New Zealand.

I'm Icelandic, studying in the US at the moment.
I'm told that I sound English, both by vocabulary and emphasis. In fact, I definitely sound more Scandinavian than English, but my "careful voice" has strong elements of British english in it, because of the way I learned to speak.
Therefore, I have to say that "melting pot" accents = 4tw. ------------------------------------------- "Never underestimate the power of language."

Heh, I remember being repeatedly asked to repeat what I had said on Vent for a while.
Still happens sometimes; I have a tendency to slip into my Leeds accent which not a lot of people get (especially non-native speakers, which is understandable). According to some of my mates from my time at Uni, they couldn't understand what I was saying for the first 3 months we were studying together :P

WHY CAN'T I SOUND NORMAL!!!
The problem I have with the Irish is that they talk at 90 miles an hour. I always thought the saying was that the Scottish were penny pinchers but I think the Irish learned to talk like that to keep phone call costs low.
It would be easier to understand an Irishman if they slowed it down a bit.
Personally, I like the Welsh accent, a sing-song accent I could listen to all day. Failing that, my ex-wife is from Dundee and I went up there to visit her relatives, it's a nice smooth accent not like the stoccato Glasgow accent.
The trouble I had with Scottish is not the accent, which I could understand easily, it was the way they said things. Like "going for the messages" = Going shopping. It's really confusing
