I heard lotsa horror stories about EVE before I started playing. Evil players, back-stabbing, nothing but a buncha bastards.
Now, this very well may be true, but I just had a really great thing happen thanks to another player.
I was Ratting a Serpentis Den, when another player joins me..a much better player. He starts just sweeping up the targets and blowing them away. I figured I wouldn't have much of chance to loot much, but eh, I'm having fun just killing stuff. When we cleared the site, he blues all of his loot drops. Nice thing to do, I thought. So I just said "Thanks" in local, and went on my merry way.
A few minutes later he donates 20mil ISK to me (which is 3 times my current bank account). Yeah, I know 20mil isn't much to the veteran players, but it meant a lot to me.
Now, I'm a cynical misanthrope just like most of us here, but that one brief encounter actually made me feel better about humanity...for a little while at least.
Of course tomorrow, he might be the guy blasting me into little metal pieces...
Damn I love this game. Why the hell didn't I play this sooner? |

I agree completely and I'm happy to see fellow newbros greeted like that!
Something similar happened to me when I was still very new:
One experienced player gave me a Fed Navy Comet after I lost mine in a mission. At that point I had been only 2 weeks into the game or so and I had made the mistake of buying one with the first 20 Million ISK I had... Flew a level 2 with it and boom.
I still have that Comet. It reminds me of the fact that there are some really generous and nice people out there.
Of course we are not at fluffypark online here and the grim reality of new eden is all over the place. But a humane gesture here and there can go a long way and become a gem of memory, long to be remembered. Occasionally a Eve player will show kindness and compassion just don't get used to it, or expect it. Especially the latter. More often than not we just take advantage of you.
One of the last acts of kindness I showed someone was a guy just started playing fairly recently so I put a bounty on him, than gave him double that bounty in an isk donation. The bounty was a reminder to assume that someones always after you, fly safe. And isk was just to help him along his way since he just started out so there be less of an isk grind since he was new.
Sometimes I help out a new player like this, the way I see it is if I can help keep a new player in the game they will become either the hunter or the prey latter on. Welcome to Eve. Everyone here is an Evil Sick Sadistic Bastard who is out to get you. Anyone who tells you otherwise is either trying to scam you or use you. |

Actually human interaction would be more on par with EVE's cutthroat mentality than it would people actually donating time/money to someone. |

New players can make that quick. Take the mining trainer first so you get the ore mining frigate then mine away. BTW we will see how much it rocks in 2015 when chris roberts releases star citizen. |

I firmly believe the average morals of all players in EVE is quite similar to other games. However, EVE players tend to take things to extremes. There are those who do nothing but kill, steal and generally ruin someone's day (great fun, really). There are also those who will give new players enough isk to cover any ship they will need in the near future, and take them under their wing and teach them everything they know (lots of warm fuzzy feelings, also good). Good and bad, these people are what makes EVE special; a sandbox that spits out stories like no other.
Now get out there, and make some stories. |

Wasn't the release date already 2016? I recall reading that somewhere couple weeks back.
Also, why in the name of raptorjesus are people comparing Eve to SC? One is a internet spaceships spreadsheet simulator with enough tears which when distilled would provide drinking water for the entirety of continental Africa. The other one is wow in space.

It happens more often then you think.
Yesterday we caught a retriever mining in a c1, podded him of course, but something was off - too easy.
So I talked to him, turned out he was new - he found a high-sec hole and was popping in and out. So i told him how to avoid being probed down, and refunded his ship + plus a lil extra.
More noobs that stick around - more fun for all of us later on. |

Probably for the same reason I didn't, I heard about EVE in 2003 but didn't play until 2007 because people talked so much crap about it. That's what people do, they can't just say "nice game if you like that, but it's not for me".
No, they have to say "it sucks, stay away, don't play that game you'll regret it" and I honestly didn't know any better.
Even after I got into the game, I (stupidly) listened to people who said stay in high sec don't go to null, null is slavery, you have to get up at 3am to play when they tell you or you get kicked out and you can't get into a corp about 150 million skill point away you need to be able to fly a Titan while looking at a spreadsheet blah blah blah. So i spent my 1st year in high sec except for a few quick trips to low and null....
I did have the same experience you did. I got a rifter and jumped into low sec shortly after starting the game. Got blown up by a dude in a Brutix (man that was one mean looking spaceship). In the low sec station he gave me my stuff back and gave me enough isk for several more rifters. That had a real impact on me.

A couple of weeks ago I was running a mission and a guy showed up in a Noctis. When I got done doing my thing and shooting everything, I blued all the wrecks and cargo containers. I was blitzing L4s out of Osmon for a study I had been working on so didn't care about any of the loot or the salvage.
He gave me a "thanks" in Local. I gave him a o/ and felt like I had done my good deed for the day. "Grr Kimmi-á Nerf Chans!" ~Jenn aSide

My short story(s) im 5 months old now I go into a WH and start mining. tengue shows up and pops me- first death ever. sad. I post on wh forum about my mishap looking for advice (nothing more) dude who popped me emails me- apologizes and offers for me to come along in the future for learning about WH's. he wires me 30 mil for my retriever.
another dude on forum sees what happened- wires me 100 mil plus some advice - helps me purchase a nicer miner. I never asked for anything. but some people like to help. Now I will pay it forward when I see someone in need.

Except your pride. Never underestimate the value you subconsciously set on your pride. It can make you do rather foolish (and hilarious) things. Remember to take a deep breath, turn around, put gf in local and just walk away. You will never win every fight - but that just makes the ones you do win so much sweeter. |

When I started this game, I was so pathetically ignorant that I was ratting in a badger when I got bored of mining with it.
Often after the laughter in local died down, people would try to help me out, for which I was grateful. Finally some vet decided they couldn't take the pain of watching me struggle and sent me five million iskies. That was a lot of dosh back then. If you started a thread saying you were giving away a mil it would be 20 pages in an hour.
As a result of that experience, I stayed in a game that I might not have lasted long in otherwise. I try to do the same for new players now.
Not really trying to make a point. Just thought I'd throw this in here.
