Was thinking of buying a navy issue Apoc, but keep getting told not to bother as some mean pirate will just blow it up for the sake of it.

any ship can be blown up, stay in empire and its worth it, i guess.
if you like apoc buy that thing because its the apoc*2 only the price is *10

As for your original question. If you think it is worth the billion or so it will cost you then the answer is yes. You just have to decide if you want to spend the money and if you do would you be willing to undock in it and risk running into me? Its only a game and you are the only one who can really answer the question.

For pvp, the answer is no. For pve in .5+ space, the answer is yes. However, I personally like Bhaalgorn more for pve purpose. It also got nice ship bonus if you want to go pvp. As for people will try to kill faction battleship, I serious doubt anybody would try that in .5+ systems. It is not easy to kill those ships with 1 ship. You need at least 4 bs to suicide gank 1 faction battleship and even that is chancy. So you are pretty safe as long as you stay in .5+ systems.
