Edited by: Shreven Bulks on 20/04/2006 16:13:55 Seriously. I've been around in some form or another since Beta, and I've been doing it for years and I'm tired of it. It was a hellacious pain before auto-reload, and "Reload All"...but even now, that (absurdly uniform) 10-second delay to refill the mag or swap ammo...well..I think it's about time for it to just GO. I can't think of anyone other than a laser user who'd argue in favor of the current way ammo-expending guns work.
What I'd like to see:
Ditch the delay and adust DPS if need be so the laser users don't cry. Maybe move ammo out of the cargo bay alltogether, and create a seperate cargohold for it much like with drones: things only go in or out at a POS/Carrier fitting array or station. Little tactical depth added right there. Right clicking on one of your guns should bring up a menue with all the available ammo types loaded into the "ammo bay," along with the ammount available. Changing all your ammo should be as simple as selecting the new ammo. Your guns/launchers would quickly swap belt feeds, new ammo type loaded and ready...dinky little clips on a 1400mm cannon? Whaaa? Belt-fed weapons have been around since the 1800s.
Overwhelmingly, people tend to change all their guns to the same ammo type, but that's not always the case, nor does it work for systems with mixed weapons, so I suppose the option to group weaps should be included.
This would allow more tactical flexibility and thinking...at the moment, changing ammo if you're not a laser user is very-nearly pointless because the damage you're missing out on dealing while switching over to another type would have been made up by continuing to shoot with the less-damaging loadout; this is especially true for missile ships.
Maybe even facilitate pre-concieved loadout patterns to be saved ahead of time, and accessed by clicking (right clicking to setup or change) on one of a few new "loadout" buttons added to the UI.
Down with right clicking on guns to "relaod" after a fight! No more I say! /emote picks up picketting sign.
Thoughts?

you can fit a key binding to reload all(think it's ctrl+r standard)
as for belt feeding, I dont know much on guns so I have no idear how easy it is to change belt feed, or automating the reloading/chancing of belt feed. But seeing belts are limited in length you'll still have to reload them at some point. Another way would be a slide system I guess(or what-ever it is called) but I can imagine that giving trouble with ammo jamming more often.
then again, maybe autocannons/gatling guns allready have belt feed, and artillery/rail guns have small chambers for accuracy reasons. (if you chain feed a gun the bullet will be fired from different position in firing chamber causing greater inacuracy at longer ranges, where the long range artillery are fired single shot, bullets in same position in firing chamber for better acuracy or what-ever)
also, current jet fighters ahve enough ammo for their guns to fire a few seconds, tehn theye are out. No ammo to spray for minutes on end like hollywood likes to show ;)

Without making too many real-world similies (Which are fairly irrelevent), RL battleship and cruiser canons don't have belts or clips...they have rather steady, if somewhat complicated single-shot firing systems. Belt-fed autocannon type weapons feed straight from a resevoir of ammunition. Either way, neither of these weapon systems have their firing cycles interupted by a "reload" period...they continue to fire steadily until their resevoir of ammo is depleated or the combat ends.
As to switching ammo types...this would be as simple as loading a different type of shell into the breach (as is done with tanks, say), and I imagine that, in the future, with the need to switche between ammo types, quick-chaning belt feeds would be possible for more rapid-fire weapons.

It would be so awsome... My autocannons are blasting away at a ships's shield... As shield hp reach nothing i hit the 'reload all to Hail M button'. Pop :)
I hate that ammar can do that already. Mind you i laugh at their lack of exp / kin damage :) *laughs*
