By allowing character trade?
Think about it, if it weren't for character trading, would we really have the proliferation of Supers/Titans? The training time is long, many people are never willing to spend the time on it, but people are always willing to buy such characters. If there were no market for them, would so many have been trained up? Would there be huge fleets of ISBoxer alts if people had to train each character themselves? Would there be big blue doughnuts in 0.0 if Alliances couldn't just go out and buy all the alts they needed?
Really too late to do anything about it at this point, but I wonder how the game would have progressed if PTW wasn't a reality. "Self help is all in your head" |

Black market account selling would be huge, and the only people who would get an advantage would be people willing to pay for accounts with real money from 3rd party sites.
If this wasn't a factor than Eve would probably be better off without character trading, but as we know (from looking at other MMOs), the system we have here is much much more favorable and fair to players who don't partake in out of game currency transactions.

Nullsec entities prepared to send hundreds of billions of ISK on supers and caps would be quite happy if need be to PLEX as many characters to train the skill as they need. The bazaar means players can make a living training hauling and PI and cyno and cap alts for other people. If the bazaar did not exist the big alliances would just do it in house anyway.
The only downside I can see to the character bazaar is it rains on the parade for people that want to somehow feel "elite and special" becasue of the SP they have accrued. Obsession with accumulating and micromanaging SP is a bad thing. Actually playing the game is a good thing. |

In a perfect world it would be a mistake, yes. However the world isn't perfect and people would trade characters regardless of it being allowed or not. By allowing it through the bazaar CCP has at least some control over the terms at which character trading happens and even makes a small profit from it. |

If they didn't allow it legally, there would just be a black market for it. This way at least they make some money off it. So no, they did not make a mistake, they monetized something that would have happened with or without their blessing.

its better that CCP allows a secure avenue for it to happen legitimately. CCP profits from doing so, and customers don't have to bend the rules or risk getting scammed just to compete. Its a win-win, even if its also a necessary evil. "CCP is changing policy, and has asked that we discontinue the bonus credit program after November 7th. Every character sold is the equivalent of 2 months gametime paid on top of the already paid gametime for training the character. So no, I don't think CCP made a mistake by making more money. If they didn't allow trade people wouldn't just go "oh no! no titans!", they would simply train more up.
Most isboxer alts take very little training. A mining fleet can be operational in 8 days, and can earn their plex while training, so people who go out buying isboxer miners are pretty dense. Isboxing gankers are better, they actually shouldn't train too much, otherwise clone costs can become an issue. PVE isboxers again, short train to become operational and pay for themselves. Character sales just pay CCP to let someone else do your leveling up.
By the way, it's not even remotely PTW. There are a lot of people that could take a 2 day old frigate alt and demolish most people in combat. The big blue doughnut is a result of people being too risk averse to fight back. In any game that allows cooperation, the bigger group is going to have an easier time. So instead of armchair critiquing the game from the safety of a high sec station, you complainers should actually learn how to fight back. The vast majority of the game's population is not part of the doughnut you complain about, so it's not like you are short of recruits. The Indecisive Noob - A new EVE Fan Blog for news and stuff. |

Maybe CCP are realists. What is the difference between a character I trade to you via an official trade and a character I sell you on e-bay by simply providing the log in/password information?
The difference is $20 to CCP. That's kind of smart.
Just like PLEX. CCP cash in real money on players' desires to circumvent game mechanics. Making it legal means no black market. CCP are smart enough to know that character trade (and ISK trade) are going to happen one way or another. |

while your going down the char trade mistake route. i think ccp made a mistake allowing people to control more then 1 account don't get me wrong i got 5 accounts my self. Would have loved to see what the game would be like where every pilot is one person.
my guess would be the game would be a lot quieter and maybe would not have lasted 10 years with less accounts comes less income for ccp. there is that.
yes i know you would have people with multi PCs doing it that way. To get around it.
think i may fix the problem with OGB as noone in their right mind is going to joina fleet to sit off grid to boost lolz.

Very curious thing to think about. I do believe that EVE would have a lot less new players is character trading didn't exist. Mostly I believe that players buy toons with like 20 to 30 mill SP do get a leg up on a certain profession they want to do in EVE. But I also believe that it's a mistake for new players to do this cause they really have no idea what they want to do in EVE until they start playing the game on a regular basis. But that's just my take on it. What's weird to me is how someone could sell a toon with so much time invested in training. IMO you can't put a price tag on hard work and time. |

The mistake that has created the super/blob monster is that all resources are infinite.
Make the resources finite such that belts can be permanently mined out, and moons permanently sucked dry or on a basis that required "moon rotation", and supers would be as "rare" as aircraft carriers are in RL (because our planet has finite resources).
Notice how history can tell us that the majority of human conflict has roots in the security or acquisition of .... natural resources?
And what is the game that is supposed to be allllllll about fighting and leetery and PVP and HTFU and go back to WoW if you can't handle it lacking?
Certainly not resources, as the belts and moons just keep on spewing and the supers just keep on getting cranked out.
Infinite resources contradicts everything that the game is supposed to be (all about if you ask the ePeen brigade) involved in conflict.
Yeah I know, "but there will be no ships left! Boo hoo!". No. Just let wrecks have a more realistic salvage yield such that, as an example, we only lose 10-20 percent of the total mass.
So after the huge blob fights are over, and bitter vets speak of them with a distant stare, there will be entirely new wars over who gets to salvage the wrecks and build new fleets.

Even ignoring all of the risks that entails such a system would be so open to scams and abuse that nobody could do any trades or sales reliably. Only the dumbest of the dumb, who also happened to have lots of ISK, would ever try such a thing. Furthermore it would run the risk of CCP banning that account at any moment if they ever got wind that it had changed hands.
Sure a very, very small handful of people would still do it, but a couple morons ******* about on eBay doesn't make a black market. "Pretty much all 14 of the CSM were in favor of a drone assign nerf for OBVIOUS gameplay reasons" - Sala Cameron
