My experience has been, one might say fun, but all together a learning experience with PvP campers and pirates. I have lost many a ship to them, no biggie, till I ran out of isk. So one day on my way out to pick up my stuff in deep space ( Outer Ring ) I was attacked at a gate for no apparent reason. So I tried something new.
And that something new was that nice big red button that said " Self-Destruct ". It worked better than I thought it would. My ship blew up before the pirates could blow it up and nothing was spared from my ship, none of the rare hull mods I had or the stuff I had in my cargo.
And now that when I am not in ship anymore, in a pod. With the new patch that you lose sec status from blowing up pods, I believe I am pretty safe. So to all you out there that camp and can find nothing better to do, if taken the chance to try to take me out, I will scuttle my ship and you gain nothing. Plus the kill is taken away as well.
Just wanted to note this to all you griefers.

Yep, I also got had by gate wan*ers the other day too, congrats to all of you, you seem to have mastered the art of PPPPPPvP.
I too hit the self destruct button before being podded tho so they did NOT get my stuff 
I will ALWAYS do this no matter what, no loot from me nasty pirate scum.

I would just pod you
hell, even we need to keep up out -9.9 rating, and a silly little carebear like you helps alot.
Why dont you just press self destruct before you go into 0.0 next time? saves you on clone cost..

now ive heard it all first u guys b*tch at pirates for "tricks" such as the old grid trick stacking jump in points laggin people out and so on i myself have never "gate-camped" or staked out a jump in point i go after my victoms by coming to them and most the time they run if can or stay and fight so far i have incountered no cowards to date but now u guys wanna "self-destruct" to take away the fun for us pirates so i say this if u gonna b*tch about things like this then dont do similiar ones back so as far as im concerned u have no right to talk about pirates if u gonna be as cheap as some of them out there

Sigh, nope, no threat windows until ALREADY targeting me due to +sec levels. Webbed at least a few times within a second or two of threat window appearing. Not much I could do really.
I did try to just truck on to the gate but alas, 20 odd m/s is just not fast enough (And no, the MWD did NOT help me much, just drained my cap real fast) when several people are shooting at you. I didn't kill the ship until I had only structure left at 19km from gate (too far)
So no Kalhan I did not panic, just got caught out due to not checking my scanner evaluating the threat and then warping somwhere else within 5 secs of arriving at the gate. Next time I am sure I will be more aware.
I will always destroy the ship, quite willing to negotiate a fee for release of course but sadly there was no convo at all on this occasion

Seems like a reasonable tactic. Might force pirates back to the old ransom methods. Now that all EW works pretty well, once you've got someone scrambled and webbed there should be lots of time for negotiation.
I will grant, however, that it is in fact not the pirates fault that they got into the habit of killing everyone and sorting through cans. Too many people in the past were agreeing to a "toll" then warping out/logging off and then talking trash to the pirates later, showing sometimes less manners than the pirates themselves. No surprise they switched to a kill em all mentality. With powerfull EW and the two minute timer tho, those days are over and perhaps we can return to legitimate extortion :) Both would now be holding some of the cards, as the pirate has the option of destroying the traveller but the traveller has the option of self-destructing. Hence, ideally, a mutual motivation to come to a REASONABLE agreement regarding a toll/protection fee, rather than destruction of the ship in which the traveller will lose all, and the pirate will gain nothing.
I guaranteee that I will be self-destructing the next time someone successfully PKs me without giving me an extortion option. And I will be negotiating in good faith if they come up with enough EW and firepower to stop me in my Domi and then choose to negotiate.

Never let a 'petition whining' carebear survive. Warpjam + Webstasis field + 9 Ogre drones + a whole chain of bane torpedoes + turn up your soundsystem for the ******le* of the pod as the torps displays the fireworks.
I even mounted 8 civilian gatling guns on to my Apocalypse for those humiliating screenshots.
Just because they get unfair advantages with CCP doesen't mean we have to put up with it.
(And yes, I do have a Megathron and a Scorpion too. I can't fly the scorp though  )

Seems like a perfectly reasonable thing to do in the situation. If you are going to lose your ship and your cargo anyway then why should the pirate get it? It might make the pirate angry but since they were most likely going to pod you anyway, what do you care.

actualy
if your not flying anything near the size of a battleship you will always be late reaching for that self destruct button =)
As for the fun loving carebears, I webbed n scrambled someone who decided to SD on me today. I kept him with me for 2 1/2 hours, in that time he realized he hadn't updated his clone.
Eventualy he got sick of it and self destructed... dead god, I wonder why he didnt log =)

hehe same happened here i once jammed a ship and ask for a fee to jump in the gate he self destruct so i jammed the pod and ask a fee for his life .... he comminted suicide . was really fun though had a good laugh . i lost 12 slugs for my railguns DAMN . i was so ****ed :P
If its not you today its gonna be someone else in 5 min . I dont care :P pvp is fun .
