Hello,
I have become smarter with everything since loosing my first ship. I have a MWD and cloak 2 now and have been practicing the MWD plus cloak trick in high sec until getting good at it. The problem is approaching a stargate. When I lost my ship to that gate camp it was not from coming in it was from approaching it. The trick is only for coming in. How do you safely approach a gate? I have tried using the approach to w/n 100 km but this is not far enough away and there is no option for further. Not only that but approaching the gate from this distance takes forever especially if cloaked. The only other option I see is when warping to a gate use the click menu to warp jump. However this leaves 5 seconds or so for them to target you before the gate jumps you. This is too long.
So is there a good method for approaching a gate just like there is for jumping in using the MWD and cloaking 2?
Thanks! |

This is too long. It looks like you're sitting there vulnerable but you're not. It just takes a bit to decelerate the whole way from warp. While you're decelerating, you still count as "in warp" so you can't do anything, but nobody can do anything to you either. As soon as people can target you, you are also able to jump.
So... the safest way to "approach" a gate in hisec and lowsec is to simply warp right to it and jump. If hostiles follow you, or are camping the other side of the gate, you can do the cloak+MWD trick to get away. 99% of the time it works 99% of the time. 2 things:
A. Those 5 seconds...that is because of lag etc. I have never been shot at (im not counting smartie-BS) on my out gates when using the jump command from amywhere. If you have a 5 second delay, there is likely something wrong somewhere that causes lag. There IS a very brief time you are vulnerable, but your tank should be more then enough to bridge that. Also make sure you have no timers running that prevent gate activation (weapon timer or session change timer).
B. About the warp at 100. That is SO simple.
Warp distance >= 150km.
Warp to 100 > bookmark spot > warp out > warp to 70 on said bookmark > voila, you have a tac that is approx 170 of gate.
Or just use an interceptor with MWD.

This was the answer I was assuming. That it would be virtually impossible to target me warp jumping to the gate with the click menu. I just wanted to make sure before I died again through ignorance. Bookmarking to a safe spot >100km away to "scope" it first would seem unnecessary than I guess? However for stations it sounds like a great idea, especially in low sec.
Thanks again. |

I would suggest to even in lowsec make tacs.
It might not be to go around bubbles, but it does give you eyes on a gate before commiting to it (check for a scout or smarties)
Of course only invest this time on gates you are going to regurly use. Personal channel: Crazy Dutch Guy

Do note that for stations entering is usually far more safer then leaving the station but you are safe for the 30s upon leaving the station after that you're toast and doing about anything will destroy the immunity. However undock kick off is usually enough to allow you to warp quickly if you have a bm in direct line (do note that this does not work with jita 4-4 that has about 1 000 000 cans and **** to decloak and extend the grid near the moon).
This isn't say the you can run, because often you cannot, though some stations have a large enough undock ring for you to re-enter the station if there are hostiles and some stations, according to rumourmongering, still lack the kick off from undock. |

Several things need minor corrections in this thread:
You can be damaged while "in warp". You cannot be locked, meaning standard guns will not be able to shoot you, but you can be smartbombed and bombed (<- Not 100% sure on this second point). Luckily, smartbombs do have a minimum distance from gate at which they can be activated, but a well positioned smartbombing BS might still hit your ship.
Next, there are two things you can do when undocking to "keep your ship safe".
1.) Is hit ctrl+space. This will stop your ship without breaking your damage immunity. On "most" station models, your ship will come to a stop within dock range, and you can hit dock after the 10s session change expires to redock safely. Some stations, known as kickout-stations, will stop your ship beyond dock range, and hostiles may kill you before docking.
2.) Is undock bookmarks. You leave station in a very specific direction traveling above max velocity. If you have a bookmark farther than 150 km's completely inline with your undock vector, you can warp to it with essentially a zero align time (i.e. you enter warp instantly). These need to be carefully placed bookmarks, but are a great way of getting out of hostile lowsec & highsec stations. Nullsec isn't so lucky, as bubbles can prevent your warp.

Since no one has mentioned it yet, another step you should take before warping to a gate is to warp to a nearby celestial and do a narrow directional scan on the gate. This should tell you if there are any hostiles waiting there. If you don't know how to use d-scan do a bit of googling as it's a major part of staying safe in hostile space.
Using d-scan on gates is especially important when you go out to null, since bubbles can pull you out of warp at funny ranges and make you very sad that you warped directly to the gate. (D-scan will not only show enemy ships, but also warp disruption bubbles, assuming your overview settings are correct). www.ensignyooch.wordpress.com

Split the 'D'...
If you are in a tanky ship and you land on a gate with baddies, you may want to actually start aligning off gate to a safe/station/celestial to force them to tackle you, and thus acquire a 1 minute timer. Once they get said timer, jump gate and they can't follow behind you for a full minute. :) Thus you just have the guys already on the far side to deal with.
p.s. This also can save you bacon in hisec during wars, if you end up on a gate with a single war target looking to zap you.

Isn't dscan different than the overview? I know there is an option in dscan to use overview settings. Is this what you mean?
I am still learning dscan. Would increasing certain skills as well as purchasable things help give me a better way of determining range? I know things like planets show up with a range but ships do not seem to unless they are very close in overview. How close do you have to be to a ship to have it show on the overview? I almost find the overview gives me better information about people coming up into my immediate area. |

Ships show up with a distance on D-Scan if and only if they are uncloaked and 'on-grid' with you.
If they are off grid - even by a metre - they will not show up.
Grid size varies but is usually about 250km. https://forums.eveonline.com/default.aspx?g=posts&t=238931 - an idea for a new form of hybrid PVE/PVP content. https://forums.eveonline.com/default.aspx?g=posts&t=318489 - Proposal for a new type of tech 2 Destroyer If you want to mine in highsec, read www.minerbumping.com. |

The overview shows objects "on-grid" with you (about 250 km). D-scan lets you see objects which are not "on-grid" with you within your specified range (max is about 14 AU). This means you can warp to a planet 2 AU away from the gate and check it for (uncloaked) ships without actually warping on to the grid. www.ensignyooch.wordpress.com

As already said, objects appear with a distance if you can see them on the overview, which happens when they are "on-grid" with you. (Usually that means within 250km - for the exact answer, google 'grid-fu' and prepare to have your mind blown.) And yes, the overview gives better information, but only for objects that are close.
D-scan gives information about people that are far away. You can use d-scan to know how far someone is by playing with the d-scan range. If you set the range to 10AU and they show up on d-scan and then you set the range to 8AU and they disappear, you know that they are between 8-10AU away. You can continue that game to get an even more precise reading, but usually a rough idea is all you need. (Of course, you need to be aware that they might be moving between each of your scans.)
It's also quite easy to check whether someone is on a gate/station/planet: set the angle to just cover the gate, then scan twice, once with a distance slightly behind the gate and once slightly before the gate and if a ship only shows up with the gate you can be pretty certain that it's sitting on the gate.
Also, the "use overview settings" check box allows you to filter the d-scan result and remove clutter. Be careful with that feature - if you change your overview tab to a tab that does not show enemy players and then forget about it, you will also no longer see them on dscan and might get jumped. |

problem with station is that warp to zero actually rather often leaves you outside of the distance you need to dock. so the pod/ship has to fly a second or two before docking. why you should always have a bookmark where you can dock instantly.

To expand on that: If there is no Celestial object within 14 AU of the gate from where you can D-scan if gate itself is camped, you can empty your Capacitor (by initiating and chancelling Warp To repeatedly) down to the point where you only warp part of the distance but not the full one, which will hopefully drop you within said D-scan range. Is there an area of invulnerability around the stargate when warping out?
Sometimes when I warp to 0 at a gate my ship will be hung up for a bit before it warps (not talking about if I end up farther away from the gate and have to motor to it).

Warping "to 0" can sometimes indeed land you just outside of jump range which makes you approach the gate for a couple seconds before jumping. It's usually not a big deal, but can be very scary when there are hostiles on the gate with you.
Also, pro tip: try to distinguish between warping and jumping for the sake of clarity. Warping is traveling from place to place within a system. Jumping is using a jump gate, wormhole, jump drive, jump portal, or jump bridge to get from one system to another. They are fundamentally different, and using the same word for them can lead to confusion. I think what he's on about is sometimes the gate doesn't activate at all / sometimes there's a few seconds delay. You can be sat zero on the gate and your ship just sits there... Spam the jump button and it say "session change already in progress" even though you're just sitting 0 at the gate. Hell sometimes it even happens on Wormholes, which is never good.
I've only noticed it very recently happening to myself sometimes (within the past two weeks) and I lost a Pod two days ago to this when it happened on a station: Station told me my dock had been requested and accepted yet I was still sat there in space at zero and couldn't do anything except watch my ship and pod go pop to a Hurricane. Quoted from Doc Fury: "Concerned citizens: Doc seldom plays EVE on the weekends during spring and summer, so you will always be on your own for a couple days a week. Doc spends that time collecting kittens for the on-going sacrifices, engaging in reckless outdoor activities, and speaking in the 3rd person." |
