I belive that we went past another doomsday prediction recently without anyone even realising.
I do enjoy how we continue to stay alive despite the amazing odds stacked against the planet and the human race.
I often wonder if our luck will one day run out and will we even notice the end of the world happening?
Anyone got any favourite doomsday predictions we flew straight past? ------------------------------ Benilopax touched by an Avon!

No one really figured out what the end of the Mayan calender was supposed to represent. But you could assume that they thought it would be significant enough to plot it down 3000 years ago. They thought that everything would change.
IIRC they figured the whole thing out from sun cycles instead of planetary formation, pretty clever chaps the Maya all in all.

Yep the mayan calendar ends on that day
That date is also predicted in the bible, old Hebrew manuscripts and Indian writings I think.
The question now remains; " if you know you had one day left to live, what would you do? "

I think the western world will fall apart when George Bush leaves office. The massive debt that he has caused will cause some issues whent the new guy goes, "oh, well the us is flat broke".
horrible recession, stock market crash. Biggest depression followed by probable war as resource grabbing starts to happen.
But hey, at least global warming will be balanced out by nuclear winter.

When every theory predicting the end of the earth so far has failed, why did you have to make a theory that would predict the opposite?

And someone told me that the most "pessimistic" estimation of some economists is that stock market crashes at about 2012 others give it between 10 and 30 years.

The problem with that, is we now have a global economy, and what happens in once place trickles to the next. Mr. Bernanke will, however, do his part to keep things in line.

My post here (in yet another *OMG We're All Going To Die!!!!" thread) pretty much sums my feelings up.
To quote:
Originally by: Raven Aure Assuming we live in a fairly mathematically based world, there's no basis that this is an "apocalypse" time.
In fact, the entire calendar is completely abritrary anyway. It has both changed through history and isn't the only calendar used today.
Basically humans love attatching siginificance to events born from sheer probability. Just think about how when you're out and about and you meet someone - often people say "it's a small world". But do you ever say "it's a large world" when you go out and don't meet someone you know?

In all honesty, I always believed there are extraterestrials and other inteligent beings "out there", but having read some of the links posted in this form makes me sad.
So sad, I am almost tempted to go to that other thread currently on the first page and let them pray for my suicide. It's just hard to accept that I live in a world with so many idiots who, after believing in various gods, now want to create a new "religion" (or belief, if you like that word better).
If inteligent life exists, I hope they come take me away from you people! (shouting in the direction of the other web sites).

Other life within the universe is an unaccepted statistical probability. At least that's my view.
Just a point - "religion" and "belief" are two very very different things and should never be confused. ______________________

At this very moment I fail to see the difference. Unless we're talking "I believe the sky is blue, although I don't see it right now, but things were looking great 30 minutes ago"?
