I have been looking for information on the Ship Scanner (the med-slot module that shows the target's fitted modules, not the one used for finding people in space.) I can't seem to find anything about it though.
I'm aware that most people consider it a wasted med-slot on combat ships, but I have a specific purpose I need it for. I tried testing it out, but found a few problems.
1) It does not seem to give a full read-out some times. That is, modules that appear in one cycle sometimes don't in the next.
2) It sometimes shows duplicates of the same module even though I know they only have 1 fitted. (e.g. It showed 2 Small Armor Reps. and 1 Co-Processor II on a Retriever, which only has 2 lo-slots.)
Does anyone have any information on how to make it more reliable? Or are these problems intentional?
Thanks for any help.

The module cycles... and gives you a "reading" of the ship. So in the first cycle you might pick up certain things and the following cycle other things.
The reason why it shows certain modules twice is that the scanning window doesn't clear up itself for each cycle.
All in all, just run the scanner 2-3 cycles and take a peek at the guy's cargohold.

I'm pretty sure it doesn't have to do with the window not clearing for two reasons. One, I've had it happen on the first cycle. And, two, I've set it to manual and closed the window each time and had it still happen. Thanks for the reply though.
Also, does using a named scanner help? For example, will a Practical Type-E Ship Scanner give me a better read-out than a Ship Scanner I?

Named scanners have higher range and generally use less CPU.

Getting duplicate items is normal and (as far as I know) there's no way to change that. Ship scanners are designed to give you a rough idea of the fitting on the target ship. Same thing with cargo scanners, they won't always show 100% of the cargo. --
